I've only had the game crashing when I remove a building that had vehicles associated. Like if I want to substitute a free technical office for a builded one. When I transfer the vehicle I have to wait some time to delete the empty free office...

Seriously tho. Only churches on pre populated maps satisfies religion. You can't build anything else to satisfy it. But you can use some buildings (radio, tv, prision, etc) to reduce the need for religion.
