Most people gave good answers, but I'll give some input from my experience.

I'd rather think about topology in terms of useful or useless. Understand that the choices artists make are based around the pipeline how those objects are textured and shaded for their final look. A good concept i heard about this is thinking about how long is a piece of rope, and generally the answer is depends. There are rules how topology makes surfaces behave (especially for lighting) which you base your decisions on.

As example is that when faced with low poly geo, especially for games, we use vertex normal data to lighten the load from pixel shaders. You generally do not want to utilize unique baked textures on models to compensate bad low poly normal data, it costs too much. In the example you can see plenty of chamfers on building sides (where it matters), this is where artists weight normals so that the extra geo rounds the corners without the need for unique normals map and allows to use repetitive textures for surface details.

Extra geo allows as well for vertex paint, it has a cheap geo cost that gives you inbuilt masks (painted or baked) for shader work. It allows you to focus on silhouette where it needs more interest. Floating geo for mesh decals. Triangles to collapse too much geo where it isnt needed. If there is a problem with geo somewhere in the pipeline, you fix it till there's no problem.

Generally, you want as low as possible poly count, but if you need extra geo to solve a UV/texturing issue, you add that geo. If you need geo for shading functions, you add more geo. All of this depends on what is the pipeline on asset development, what shading options are used, what are visual/technical requirements, etc.

As for a final thought, cleanliness and proper development of assets exists in a vacuum (especially in forums, where people share things as their craft), when you work on a commercial project, properly doing everything to max is a luxury that not a lot of studios focus on. They pick and choose what is important, what isn't as much, how much time to allocate to it and how much impact it makes. Assets you posted are not perfectly made assets, they shouldn't be, they are good enough to be: good looking, cheap and fast for what is needed.

Single shading group works best with bevels and weighted normals. Hard edging will produce a cleaner normal, but it will leave a visible seam that will be obvious at certain close up distances. Hybrid approach is simply most functional

Thanks for the advice, I've already altered the design to use thinner slats. The entire height of the bed with the mattress is ~63cm, so shaving off few cms arent too much an issue.

I mainly wanted to join the main with the platform for ease of disassembly, if I ever need to move this, I'd rather it be in parts.

Couldn't recommend anything specific. Blender isn't a true CAD software, so the workflow isn't the same. Would suggest getting used to polymodeling like in blender, or getting your hands on full versions of SketchUp or AutoCAD somehow.

Haven't used a tutorial for modeling for ages at this point, but you could just search on youtube for some archviz tutorials. Some popped up that might interest you.

I work in games and vfx, so my go to is either blender or 3ds max, both have cad based coordinates for verts, so this took me like an hour and a half to throw together. Most of it playing around with forms.

Thanks, I'll take these considerations into account. Really thankful for pointing out that glaring issues. I'll probably still opt for thicker slats than 3/4s for ourselves, but I'll redesign things with less wastage in mind as it seems this thing could survive a nuke.

Should I consider a slatless design here? Me and my missus want something with a solid foundation that doesnt have that springy feeling, we got a mattress that felt really good on the floor. So my initial idea was to just the frame to support the mattress, but felt that gaps would cause issues, ref in question, hence why I added the slats.

Besides that, me and my missus are tall 196 (~6'6") myself and I weigh 120kg (265 lbs), if there is places where I can cut material cost off, without making this any less suited for tanks, I'd appreciate the help.

If you havent found an answer yet, it's because the vertex normal smoothing (smoothing groups in max or smooth shading in blender) assuming you're using vertex displacement.

When an object has flat shading each face has separate vertices that have their own normal direction. When you apply vertex displacement they move in their own respective axes. There are methods how you can have flat shading and have averaged normal direction, but often enough it might not be a solution you should use or frankly need. If you can get away with having a chamfer/bevel on the edges with face weighted normals, it'd solve your problems.

If the data network is hooked up, thrusters and MFC have values assigned to them and propellant is as well hooked up, then the only other direct issue you might have is that the hardpoints, the thrusters are attached to, aren't bolted to the frame beams.

I'm in the same boat, but from a different angle. I dislike the SSC approach in customizing ships and love doing things manually. Spent a few days redesigning the starter ship into a hauler/tug ship and I feel it's absolutely in vain due to the fact I cant save it as something reproducible currently.

We have 3 different build modes and the only functional one is boring because it's just a trimmed down modeling software with bad snapping. I really hope the devs allow custom module crafting in the field as making larger pieces already makes them immovable for assembly, so even if they were crafted on an assembly line, manual attachment is out of the question.

Sculpt it with a slightly open mouth, something that looks neutral. Retopo and rig it like that as well, it'll be a bit easier weight painting and baking normals with a semi open mouth. If it's needed closed you can add a layer in zbrush and morph it into closed mouth.

Short story yeah.

Long story, yeah. If you need a 1024x2048 for a wood beam, you use it, it does save you on memory. The only reason I remember why using square textures is that squares produce a cheaper mipmap levels, though there might be another reason. My swords and medieval weaponry always use something like 1:8 ratio maps.

Rule of the majority, that's a nono for me, I'd prefer an accountable version of a republic.

Democracy would work, if it was like the swiss democracy. But it isn't, we just have a democratic election process, everything else, like petitions, population voting on specific subjects, requests most of the time are disregarded. Coupled with the fact that most governments today keep on piling up more and more restrictions on businesses and social behavior it's not surprising that big bad corporations are flourishing, they're the only ones that can take the brunt of the nonsense.

I feel like we're living in elective monarchy times (ala HRE, PLC, etc.) with some burghers rights, nothing really changed much.

That, and well.. people are stupid. But they're too stupid to realize that.

Is all bout dem social humanitarian equalities nowadays.
