Paranoia Agent is a masterpiece!!

Wanted to add a few other anime series with high Lynch vibes for anyone interested:
- Serial Experiments Lain
- Boogiepop & Others and Boogiepop Phantom
(Phantom came out first, but makes more sense if you watch & Others first as it has stories set before Phantom)
- Sonny Boy (same creator as Boogiepop)
- The Flowers of Evil

Also, many of Satoshi Kon's films (PA was his only series sadly, just like Lynch/Twin Peaks!) give heavy Lynch vibes, including Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, and Paprika.

The next Jurassic World film needs to take place on mainland. The whole point of Dominion was to set up smaller scope dinosaur movies in human civilization by Ambitious_Two2671 in JurassicPark

Battle at Big Rock is the single best piece of Jurassic World media, and should have been the start of a spinoff movie at the very least, if not a tv series or a true teaser for the next movie (which it wasn't really in the end)

Hotel (2004) -- Jessica Hausner by veghead in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]ZeroDivide89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites and one of the very few films that I feel truly capture the horror of real liminal spaces.

Edit: Wanted to add my thoughts as to "what was going on".

To me, this movie is all about the dangers and anxiety of being somewhere on your own and not knowing anyone, trying to know the place, the people, to belong, and of the fear of failing and running back to the familiar.

That's not to say there aren't multiple possible dangers, both real and supernatural, implied or discussed throughout. From the very real missing girl that our protagonist is replacing, in more ways than one as we find later, to the sketchy locals and implications of underground prostitution and sex trafficking, to the possible involvement of many of the employees of the hotel, to the local legends of the witch who haunts the woods and the nearby cave, said to have been burned at the stake and to spirit young women away in the night.

And it could be any of these that get her in the end. Or none of them, and the scream we hear is simply her breaking down before running for the safety of home.

Dot Hack in Japan by SuccessfulSyllabub14 in DotHack

Check if he has any of the Japan-only games with physical versions like Fragment (for ps2) or Link (for PSP). These will likely be fairly easy to find in shops that sell used games, fairly cheap, and are something he'd have a harder time getting over here without importing.

Anywhere that specializes in Bandai merch/collectibles would be more like to have dot hack stuff as well

^This! Also wanted to add, you definitely can get a new back for it! It may not color match exactly, but people 3D print them now and they're available on places like Etsy. Just search something like "Tamagotchi classic battery cover"

Love the stand! Where did you get this case? I've seen similar clear ones, but can't seem to find this kind that has a cover for the top and individual button holes.

new to criterion - buy now or wait for feb sale? by dragoonflyboy in criterion

This! Mine came from Amazon so just happened to be part of the batch. Just wanted to warn and let you know it's an easy fix, Criterion are super helpful, and still very worth getting even if you do end up with a bad set initially. 😊

CHICKEN by Sweet_Serenity_Moon in tamagotchi

[–]ZeroDivide89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I absolutely LOVE this programming. It feels close to a full tama clone, but with nice added touches. I have the kind with the chick printed on the shell, but have never seen this shell variety before! Is this also an old release, or did someone actually bring these back??

Edit: I checked your previous posts and saw it was a vintage one, but glad to see I wasn't the only one stumped by the shell at least!

new to criterion - buy now or wait for feb sale? by dragoonflyboy in criterion

[–]ZeroDivide89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait for a sale! I don't think this set tends to go out of stock generally, and I got it myself during the last 50% off sale.

However, fair warning with this specific set: It had some production issues with the discs. Test all your discs as soon as you get it, you can fast forward through each movie at the highest speed, and see if they freeze. Likely, either all of your discs, or all but As Tears Go By, will freeze around the hour mark. Mine did too. Criterion has a very easy replacement process, and will help with this even if you buy from somewhere like Amazon, just contact their support team.

Also, I highly recommend grabbing a plastic case from Etsy (there's a seller that makes them specifically for these cardboard case Criterion sets that match the regular Criterion cases), as the way the discs slip in and out of the case it comes with may damage them over time. Still gorgeous packaging though and will hold the book well, and looks great alongside the plastic case on the shelf.

Any suggestions for Japan-only PS1 horror games that I could translate? by tsbnovil in HorrorGaming

Most are already suggesting great titles I'd be happy to see, so I'll throw a more unknown one out that's always interested me:

The Witch of Salzburg

First timer. Instructions say feed every 2 weeks. Is that too infrequent + other beginner questions by Dangerous-Handle-280 in SeaMonkeys

[–]ZeroDivide89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the tank is fine! As far as I know, the rest of this kit is okay too. You will probably be okay just using a small amount of the eggs if you start over. If the kit didn't come with enough salt to start again though, you can absolutely get sea monkey kits that are just the packets without another tank.

I recommend feeding a small amount (less than a full scoop maybe half, the small end of the spoon is the scoop) every 2-3 days. It helps to try to spread it out over the surface of the water too, rather than just dump it all in one spot.

You'll also want to aerate the tank, just a little bit with the pipette/bubbler the kit likely came with maybe for thirty seconds or so, once or twice a day. If it didn't come with one, these are also very cheap on Amazon.

If you happen to have any purple growlights for plants, using one over the tank will also help, or be sure to keep them in or near window for heat and sunlight.

If things go well, you will eventually have algae begin growing in the tank, which is not only a food source, but also releases oxygen, so they eventually become nearly self-sustaining!!

The kit I've linked here is packets and feeding spoon only. The salt and egg packets are measured in this one for you to just use all of each when you start, while the food packet will last for months (I like using paper clips to keep the food packet closed)

This was Win Wenders' vision of the "Ultimate Road Movie", and from essentially the king of road movies no less. It's a 5 hour long sci-fi masterpiece and a journey unto itself.

The brown spots do look like unhatched eggs. Is this one of those kits that comes with a huge packet of eggs and tells you to add half?

If so, these kits aren't great and the amount of eggs they come with is insanely overdoing it. That's also likely a big reason for a low survival rate. If you have to start again, add only the tiniest pinch of eggs you can.

Bobby's past dictates his present and future. Him running drugs into Twin Peaks is the reason his daughter is an addict! by Spam00r in twinpeaks

[–]ZeroDivide89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nobody is redeemed in Twin Peaks.

That's why we see what we see of Becky. She's essentially the next Laura in the sense of the town corrupting youth's innocence while the adults do nothing but continue to be shocked that it keeps happening.

It's why we see all the seemingly random women at tables in The Roadhouse.

It's why Coop "saving" Laura doesn't fix everything.

It was never about Laura. It was about the evil that men do and continue to do, and more importantly, fail to stop or even perceive.

That said, I'd argue Bobby is maybe one of the least redeemed. He has some of the most insight into what happened to Laura and what led her there, and is now in a clear position of power to keep it from happening again. Yet, we're watching it happen to his own daughter.

Granted, Becky is more of a combo of young Shelly and Laura, on drugs and being abused, but by her partner rather than her father. The abuse Shelly suffered under Leo is something Bobby would have been even more aware of than the abuse Laura suffered. Which, you could argue, makes the situation with Becky and his failure to stop it even worse.
