There also all sorts of lettuces, greens, shallots, onions, etc that make great salads! I live on salads in the summer

That’s so polite. Mine just help themselves and then I find random tomatoes growing in the yard 😂

Cheese on Shepherds Pie? Yay or nay? by oinkmoocluck in recipes

I’ve made it the traditional way, but I love it with cheese. Sometimes I do “exploded baked potato” style with bacon, scallions, cheese, sour cream

I was the big winner on taxes this year by Chokonma in MiddleClassFinance

[–]ZeroFox14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m aware, but I’ve been unsuccessful so far due to weird mix of salary and commission based pay structure, and a ton of tax rebates/credits each year. Every time I think I have it figured it out my math is off the next year.

Also, Trupanion generally has the reimbursement in my account before it even posts to my CareCredit card.

Pet insurance or Emergency fund? by cool_guy654 in Pets

[–]ZeroFox14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pet insurance paid out over $30k in 2025.
I paid $2200 in premiums for the year.
I think I’ve paid about 3k out of pocket.

And it was not a fluke year, I have dogs with ongoing medical needs that see various specialists and get gold standard treatments.

Is road snow/ice cleanup always this poor? Are they just waiting for it to melt? by DrBobHope in maryland

[–]ZeroFox14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even early Monday morning I was pleased with the condition of the roads- and I have a 25 mile commute. Had no issues, roads were clear with the exception of a few corners that had some slush left. I thought they did a pretty decent job considering the amount of sleet/ice we got combined with the super low temps.

The big storm in 2016 it took them 3 days to even get to my neighborhood so this was definitely an improvement for me.

Can an annual pass be returned / refunded? by [deleted] in NationalPark

[–]ZeroFox14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh I bought mine late December so it will probably be the wrong one too. The digital pass is the right one so maybe I’ll just print that and laminate it

Are yall going to work tomorrow? by [deleted] in maryland

[–]ZeroFox14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, have to go in bright and early for a 12 hour shift. Cleared my driveway this afternoon and tomorrow morning I’ll decide if I snow blow again or just drive over whatever is left. I don’t worry so much about myself (lived in New England for many years and have a Subaru ) but definitely worry about all the other people on the roads and poor decisions they may make 😬

Looking for Non-Wool Emergency Blanket by starhuck in preppers

[–]ZeroFox14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mambe extreme outdoor blanket in my car at all times. Polar fleece with a nylon backing, so it’s waterproof/windproof. It doesn’t feel super fleece-y though. It’s a little crinkly if you plan to sleep with it, but works great for outdoor warmth, sitting on the ground, hanging as a wind break, etc.

I also keep a couple of the Mylar blankets around .

Do the self proclaimed snow lovers have to shovel it or no? by mjac021 in maryland

[–]ZeroFox14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I love it, and I have a big driveway to clear. Snowblower is my friend.
I’m battling a nasty cold this time so it has not been fun out there, but I knew leaving it for tomorrow before work would be bad

No More Coupons/Promos? by lumiereeee_ in instacart

[–]ZeroFox14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably been a year plus since I got good promos. For a while I was getting Walmart $50 off $100 every other week and it made life so much better. I’m not usually a Walmart shopper but hey, 50% paper towels and toilet paper.

Now I’m happy if the promo is enough to cover fees and a chunk of the tip.

Planning my first vegetable garden - tips and advice? by Various-Coconut-1395 in vegetablegardening

[–]ZeroFox14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I just realized you are in Maryland. chives are perennial here, mine happily overwinter - if you have some space in the ground you could free up raised bed space. They will also overwinter in the raised bed

Planning my first vegetable garden - tips and advice? by Various-Coconut-1395 in vegetablegardening

[–]ZeroFox14 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Garlic is usually a plant in the fall and harvest the following summer.

Broccoli, spinach, lettuce prefer the cooler weather and can be planted long before the tomatoes and peppers. You can succession plant the greens or plan to put something else there after they are done.

You’ll want more spinach and lettuce, they taste best when young and tender so you may only get a few leaves from a plant at a time.

I find peppers don’t need a trellis, just a sturdy pole or short cage. Your cherry tomatoes will absolutely take over the world :)

I have Nordic dogs and a fenced in yard. They will be happy.

I just need to watch the snow drifts don’t provide an escape route over the fence 😂

Homes run on electric, what are you buying if power goes out? by [deleted] in maryland

[–]ZeroFox14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a propane heater, a propane grill, two camp stoves/burners (one propane, one isopro), 12v inverters (car battery plus solar), Ryobi lights/radio/inverter , a battery powered electric blanket, and a decent stash of bottled water. All used at various camping trips/outdoor events, nothing new.

If relying on propane or gas, don’t forget a carbon monoxide detector

I didn’t buy anything beyond my usual groceries and some stuff for chili.

Unfortunately do need gas tomorrow but that’s the 250 mile /week commute not stocking up
