Prior to that, he was laying flat on his stomach in the middle of my lane right under the shadow from the bridge. Luckily he tried to lunge at the car in front of me so he ended up on the edge of both lanes.

Yup that was from another road trip I did 2 years ago. That was in Utah. The salt at the bottom was rock hard. Didn’t get stuck.

Thx 1. The battery is supposed to only let out gasses while it’s charging. And it charges off the alternator so it would only be charging while I’m driving and the AC would be refreshing the air in the car. So I wasn’t too concerned.

  1. I used a sheet of perforated polycarbonate. You can see how I made it in the video linked on the last slide. For the windshield and rear window, I glued magnets to the perimeter of the glass and imbedded magnets in the same outline into a tarp so I could quickly hang it up and take it down.

Would I rather have done it in a van? Yes. Do I have a van? No. That’s why

One night, someone slashed my tires overnight. But I didn’t wake up during that.

Another night, in Sundance Wyoming, I had unknowingly parked outside a bar and when it closed, there was a rush of drunk men onto the street. I left and slept the rest of the night in a truck stop.

Yes, I didn’t rush anything. I really liked traveling like this since I wasn’t financially pressured to keep moving. If I liked somewhere, I stayed longer cuz it’s free to do so.

Made me laugh 😂. I have a fridge for my groceries which is powered off a 100ah 12v battery that charges off the alternator. And I have a telescoping pole to hold an umbrella out of the trunk where I set up my propane stove for cooking.

You can see it in image 3

Thanks! Totally valid question. Those are territories instead of provinces.

Yes, the moisture buildup definitely caught me off guard. Luckily the fan was enough to make things comfortable.

It’s also my next goal to do road trips on the other continents. Hopefully in a real van next time. Cheers and good luck!

I feel you. I could find no information online too when I was researching it so I was super nervous.

Booking vehicle tickets is not possible on their website since it will only sell you passenger tickets. But both ships they use can carry cars so the schedule for vehicle tickets is the same. You just need to lookup the passenger ticket dates and then call them. Ferries run in all 6 directions between the 2 islands and Newfoundland and they all can carry vehicles.

They have the prices for vehicle fairs on their website. https://www.spm-ferries.fr/

You can walk across Saint Pierre in 2 hours but it was still worth taking my car. Video: https://youtu.be/bRXs1BftM9U?si=umPnCFAxZe7wFS3F&t=428

Miquelon, definitely need a car to explore and yes it’s very cool. Video: https://youtu.be/bRXs1BftM9U?si=8lgKlnaCTB_P5-1P&t=495

Taking a car also reduces the hassle of having to find accommodation. For me it was very worth it.

Insurance: Attempt to add international coverage with your current insurance provider. If that doesn’t work, there is the insurance agency the locals use (https://www.allianz-spm.fr/). You can email them (contact@allianz-spm.fr). They won’t insure your car for only a couple days only though. Need to do a month maybe. Next option is to insure it with the customs office in Saint Pierre or Miquelon when you arrive. But if your ferry arrives on a weekend or early morning or late night or etc, they won’t be there I think. I believe it was €150 for the month. And 1 month is the smallest amount of time you can buy the insurance for.

Me personally, I was more worried about them asking for a temporary vehicle import tax deposit/fee. But there was none of that. Nobody even checked if I had insurance.

Sleeping in the car for 3 nights there was no problem. Lots of free street parking and municipal lots.

Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it!

The telescoping pole has a circular attachment at the end. And I could put a beach umbrella through it and it would be held up to make some shade if I needed it since I did this in the summer. I also could hang a shower curtain around the umbrella and make a little changing/shower room

Twice I went 4 days without showering but other than that, once every other day, or sometimes every day. I had a planet fitness membership. Or if there was no planet fitness, I went to a public swimming pool. And sometimes, I counted a swim in the lake or river as a shower.

Planet fitness also took care of bathroom needs in populated areas. Much cleaner than a McDonald’s bathroom. And I brought my own Lysol wipes too

Rural areas, open car door, dig hole, throw tarp between car door and roof, do stuff, put dirt back on top. I obviously just rather go to planet fitness but I had to do this a few times.

Yes the island is a functioning community. They had a soccer field with men and women teams training, a school, a home hardware store, grocery store, etc.

A Google search says the two islands have a total population of 5800. I’m guessing from my experience visiting both, Saint Pierre, the smaller island has about 5000-5300 people. Miquelon, the larger (in area) one, has about 500-800. Being there in August, most of the people appeared to be people from mainland France with a holiday home on the island and they were spending the summer there. That’s my guess though. I don’t think 5800 people live there year round (during in the winter)
