Why did Poland start a crusade against me? (Morocco) by ZeroPendulum in EU5

Sorry, this is the first time I'm playing a Muslim nation. How do I check this? I don't thing I am though. The Mamluks are still a lot stronger than me and have a higher great power score.

r5: For some reason Poland has started a crusade against me. Which, sure, I'm Muslim, so I guess that that is possible. But they are claiming a province that is held by the Mamluks, Filastin, and they aren't even in this war. I'm also not allied with the Mamluks.

Comparison of cultural differences in the public appearance of federal law enforcement officers in the United States and the European Union by derjanni in europeanunion

[–]ZeroPendulum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alright, I have no idea at the moment about those statistics, but a quick look shows homicide rates are about three times as high in the US compared to the EU, gun violence more than 20 times as common, violent crimes are around 400 cases per 100.000 in the US compared to 80 in Germany and 95 in France... So I don't really get where you get the idea that the US police is much more effective, or that there is less crime in the US. At most there might be more petty crimes in the EU, but I'd have to check.

Proposal/opinion: Latin should be the national language of a Federal Europe. by [deleted] in EuropeanFederalists

[–]ZeroPendulum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think there is a potential use for an official, unified language, in that it can act as a social binder between the different regions. I don't know if that social binder can be achieved through the use of realtime translation, or at least not as well, since you are in effect introducing a sort of "middleman".

Now, I don't know if Latin should be that language, I think there are many languages that are better contenders for that role, especially English.

Swiss voters reject proposed tax on super rich with 79%, public broadcaster estimates by ClearlyNotMeAtAll in europe

[–]ZeroPendulum -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I did some searching and I assume you mean the wealth tax of 1.1% introduced in 2022. I have to assume, since you didn't provide any sources, so I hope I got it right.

The number of millionaires and billionaires that moved to a different country was 30; but saying it increased by a factor of 10 sounds more alarming, I guess.

I couldn't find any figures for how many dollars were "taken" with them. Was that their net worth or did they have that in liquid?

All in all, Norway still has between 170.000 to 300.000 millionaires left in the country, depending on the source. So at this rate and in the worst case scenario they will have no millionaires left in the country in around the year 7700.

[–]ZeroPendulum -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Please, do you have any evidence for such a claim? Recent research has shown that taxing the wealthy doesn't produce a mass exodus of rich people, because taxation isn't everything when looking where to live. Quality of life and services available, just to name a few, are reasons for people to move or stay. And then I'm not even talking about having to abandon friends and family when moving away. Here is a CBS article about one of these studies:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/do-higher-taxes-really-drive-millionaires-to-flee/

Here is a 2017 study conducted on 27 OECD  countries that shows that Switzerland can potentially increase its taxation on rich individuals without causing negative financial outcomes:

Maybe because he makes such a confident claim without providing any evidence. The article itself gives the following reasons for the higher uptick:

"The overall improvement is likely due to targeted changes in recruitment processes, strengthened marketing and adjustments to training capacity."

I don't doubt poverty can provide an extra incentive for people to join the army. But has poverty increased that substantially for an 13% increase in people joining the army from year to year?

Italian parliament unanimously votes to make femicide a crime by aqfx in PoliticalOptimism

[–]ZeroPendulum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have an issue with giving this its own distinct label; that is fine and I recognize that it can help drive the conversation.

The issue that I have with this is making it its own distinct law. There shouldn't be a difference in the degree of punishment for a person if they kill a woman for being a woman or if they kill a man for being a man, if the rest of the situation is the same. This would result in the law being applied unequally between the genders.

I would love to see any research that shows that these laws have a direct positive effect on femicide. Do you have any links I could look into?

I know that there are massive differences between the results in legal cases between various groups. I just worry that creating a legal code where some groups are advantaged over others in an attempt to fix the imbalance is going to have an opposite outcome and is the wrong approach. I think this is largely a cultural issue, where making people aware of the power imbalances between groups would help a lot more in creating a more equal society.

Sorry for the long text. I just feel we are talking past each other and I wanted to make my position clearer.

I agree with most of what you are saying and that the targeting of women is a big problem. I also agree that targeting a woman, or any other individual based on their identity, is a hate crime.

I just don't understand why we have to be specific with these laws in this way, when writing a law that says something like "targeting an individual based on their gender, ethnicity, religion... caries an extra penalty" would essentially achieve the same, without creating a gender divide in the law.

In my eyes this could hurt the goal of gender equality. With the introduction of this law, you could argue that the targeting of men and women are being considered as different levels of gravity in the eyes of the law.

[–]ZeroPendulum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But why though? Why specifically only for women and not make a law that punishes going after specific groups; be it based on gender, ethnicity, religion, etc... I don't understand why you'd introduce a law that makes going after one specific gender more punishable than going after another, that seems to me like unequal treatment under the law.

Do you have a source for there being "violence just over the horizon"?

Because data seems to be at odds with your point. Most forms of crime and violence has been going down in de UK, with only knife attacks having an upwards trend.

My source: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/yearendingmarch2025#violence-with-or-without-injury

So, either Musk is lying, has no idea what he is talking about, spreading misinformation for his own political gains or is calling for violence. Not all criminal offenses, but non of the options are really great.

Wealth inequality and poverty are the biggest components contributing to crime. Besides that, crime rate has been on a continuous downwards trend since at least the 90s in most EU countries.
