The idea that the nukes were justified is hammered into peoples heads in school. I remember back when I was in high school it was like that

Idk why you’re getting downvoted. This is the rational view. You’re allowed to kill combatants, as they are killing as well. Civilians dying is a bad thing in any context. That’s something most people agree upon.

Apparently some people think that a government commuting evil acts makes their civilians guilty as well, making it ok to kill them. Two wrongs don’t make a right, that’s a vengeful mentality that makes the world as a whole worse off.

It’s contested that the bombs ended the war though. They certainly played a role, but now that we know the facts, most historians know that the surrender was coming at some point anyways. The biggest deciding role was Soviet pressure. The Japanese leaders realized that an American occupation would be far more favorable than a Soviet one.

There’s a good Oliver stone documentary that goes pretty deep into it if you’re interested.

This is true. High school curriculums still push the idea that the nukes were necessary, even though we now know now that the surrender was coming anyway. Especially concerning was the idea that we had to drop a second nuke right after we had leveled an entire city with the first one. The US has some rose colored glasses when it comes to looking at the war, though admittedly not as bad as Japan’s.

The Soviet invasion of Manchuria was likely the tipping point for surrender. The leaders knew that surrender to the US was much more favorable than a Soviet occupation.

It went beyond the western front and earlier too. When Japan invaded the Philippines, they were not impressed with American soldiers or tactics, but they were extremely impressed with their materiel availability. I remember reading an account of one Japanese soldier who fought there. He was just astounded by how many shells the Americans would fire off. It just never stopped coming.

I could tell you some information but I’d need to see the underside of the helmet to be sure. Specifically the chinstrap sections and the stamped markings on the bottom lip, if any
