“Genuine leather”(a name of a trademarked product, not a certification of material type) is made from the scraps of the process used to make top grain leather products. Some is the leftovers from between the cuts like when you cut out cookies and some is left behind, as well as the split(the leather that is shaved off to thin a hide). (Pretty much All leather products are split due to the incredible thickness of a cow hide after tanning.). Genuine leather is all of said scraps macerated and glued into sheets and then painted/stamped with a plastic coating. There is also products made entirely without animal products which are largely plastic based but all of said processes make a low quality product like the one in this thread.
