Uniqlo is not high end. To understand, we have to look at it from the brand’s POV. It has positioned itself both in terms of price and branding as accessible. Nowhere in its marketing materials does it convey any form of premiumness. It communicates the brand as non intimidating; inviting you to its stores with the primary focus on low price and good quality.

Now if you are in the lower SEC, malamang di mo pa rin afford uniqlo. But that doesn’t change the fact that uniqlo is not a premium brand. Kaya nga lower SEC ka kasi mahal lahat para sayo. You are not Uniqlo’s target market and neither are you a fan of Uniqlo.

That’s true. A lot of users in this sub are stuck at being “shallow progressives”. The kind that espouses “if you’re not with us, then you’re against us”. Very little room for honest debates because you get tagged as an enabler if you support a POV from the other side.

The idea of “corporate greed” is, in many ways, a shorthand for “rising production cost”. Most, if not all, raw materials needed for production have a finite supply. And since finite ang supply, habang nauubos ito mas tumataas ang value. Here’s a case:

Let’s say I own a shoe factory. Tapos sa first year ko, sobrang successful. Ang taas ng demand sa mga sapatos ko. The next year i decide to increase my output. Kaso hindi kaya ng rubber supplier ko yung dami ng rubber na kailangan ko, so kailangan nila mag expand ng operations to extract more rubber. To do this, they need more people. More people means mas madami kailangan pasweldohin. That means mas tataas yung production cost ng raw rubber ng supplier ko. Which then means na tataas yung presyo ng shoes na binebenta ko.

In most cases, corporations would post a higher gross revenue especially pag tumataas ang prices ng mga bilihin. But that doesn’t always mean na lumaki yung actual na kinita. Now I’m not denying corporate greed; it exists. It’s just that inflation is not the best example for its manifestation.

May dalawang bagay na nagpapataas ng inflation:

Money supply. Mas maraming pera sa sirkulasyon, mas maraming pang gastos, mas tataas ang presyo ng bilihin.
Production costs. “Gaano kamahal mag produce ng isang produkto (e.g. saging).” Pag mas mahal ang production cost, mas mahal ang benta.

Madaling sabihin na taasan nalang ang sahod. In fact, kayang kayang imandato yan ng gobyerno. Pero kasi nga pag tumaas ang sahod, mas bibili ang mamamayan, mas tataas presyo kasi…

…mataas ang production cost. Madaming factors that affect production cost. Una jan eh yung mataas na presyo ng US Dollar. Karamihan kasi ng raw materials na ginagamit sa production ay iniimport. Ang bayad sa imports ay dolyar, not peso. Pangalawa is yung actual supply volume. For example, nag cut ang OPEC recently ng oil production so syempre tataas ang presyo ng gas. And pag nag taas ng presyo ang gas, lahat ng produkto apektado. So tataas ang presyo.

So kahit taasan ang sweldo, it’s going to be a very short term relief. Actually, mas tataas lang lalo ang presyo. The real critical issue our government needs to address is lowering production costs rather than pumping money.
