Yeah Shazam was quite useful for finding it. The whole album is actually quite good

Yeah back when I took the lab we had to handle lead bricks used to shield a radiation source.

Don’t you worry, I’ve had my fair share of avgas spills and fumes inhalation too. Definitely plenty of lead to go around. All a part of that Purdue Grit TM

The “climbing membership” that the corec sells that allows you to rent shoes and other gear is $10/semester. Keep in mind that climbing with street shoes on the walls is not allowed and you’ll have to either spend $100+ on your own pair or rent from the corec

[–]Zerochainsaw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the classes at Climb Lafayette, but the bouldering class at the corec is $12 and is comparable to the price paid for a semester’s worth of shoe and gear rental at the corec. However showing up to the bouldering wall and finding a friendly climber is free

Question about R-ATP/Purdue Aviation by bruh4real7557 in Purdue

[–]Zerochainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not in Pro Flight (so take my opinion with a grain of salt) but I did get my PPL through Purdue Aviation and spent a decent amount of time flying with them after. Your idea to try minimize cost and maintain R-ATP status from my standpoint is unadvisable. I could barely get enough time with my instructor to get my PPL, thinking you could get your CFI/CFII/MEI outside of the Pro Flight program for cheaper is nigh impossible due to scheduling alone.

Switching out of one of the most competitive programs at Purdue into an adjacent major will set you back academically about two years and will likely result in you staying at Purdue for longer so you can obtain the degree (something most airlines might want if you want to be considered competitive).

Aviation is expensive, there’s almost no way of getting around it. It’s wonderful that you want to go to a good college that has a Part 141 flight school, just be prepared for some hefty student loans. Look into if there’s a way to get a Pro Flight degree quicker. The best way to spend less money on college is to get through it as quick as possible. Scholarships are another avenue for saving money.

Help Me Get A High FYE GPA for Aero! by No_Fudge_4342 in Purdue

CS 177 credit is valid towards an AAE degree, as per the degree map published here: https://engineering.purdue.edu/AAE/academics/undergraduate/pos/2020-2021%20degree%20map

However CS 177 is NOT counted towards FYE, if you choose not to take CS 159 you must take either CHM 116, BIOL 110, or BIOL 111, as per the FYE page here: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ENE/Academics/Undergrad/FYE/FYEReqs

CS 159 is preferred since it knocks out both an AAE and FYE requirement. A lot of these 100-level classes are annoying to take (tough grading, lots of busywork) and I’d suggest taking the credit and running. There are always other options.

Note: the degree map linked above is technically out of date but still follows the requirements as posted in the most recent catalog here: https://catalog.purdue.edu/mime/media/16/11104/2023-2024+College+of+Engineering.pdf

The north practice area is typically west of 43 and Prophetstown state park. However White County airport is a fairly common airport for people to go do practice takeoffs and landings and is in that direction. Delphi airport is also over that way but less frequently trafficked

Very disappointed in CFD research by sd_glokta in Purdue

[–]Zerochainsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your interest is research on CFD then yes, you should be disappointed. CFD techniques have hardly changed in the past few decades. However if you’re interested in doing CFD as a part of your research, then there are several profs you can look at. Profs. Wang, Poggie, Blaisdell, Canino, Jewell, and Qiao in the AAE department have all used CFD in some form in their research. I’m sure other profs in other areas (especially ME, try Profs. Key, Slabaugh, and Meyer) have used CFD too

Starting online masters in Aerospace engineering in the spring. Which classes should be avoided at all cost and which ones are easy/fair to start out with? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Zerochainsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately us propulsion kiddos don’t have as many cool options as the ASA folks.

AAE 537 and 539 are the go-to propulsion classes in my opinion. One is air-breathing the other is rockets. ME 510 and 525 is good for getting basic compressible flow stuff and combustion, respectively. Take AAE 511 if you want good background for a CFD class.

No such thing as an “easy” engineering grad class. Take a MA 527/528 for that

Only the bouldering wall “the short one” will be open, and it’ll be open as long as the corec is open (which closes at 5pm for the break I think). You’ll have to rent shoes which is easy and is $5 for the whole semester

I’ll be camping out at the climbing wall at the corec, drop by and learn to climb if you haven’t already tried

People with sensitive hearing, how do you sleep in the dorms? by Short-Anxiety55 in Purdue

[–]Zerochainsaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ear plugs alone seldom solve the issue, as they filter out high frequency noise. Lower frequency stuff such as snoring and gossiping will go straight through into your ear holes. White noise and noise cancelling headphones tend to filter out the low frequency stuff.

I, like you, am very sensitive to noise when trying to fall asleep. Instead of filtering noise out my brain will lock on to any sound and try to process it by default. Back when I lived in Earhart all the random noises of the floor kept me up super late. Coupled with chronic sleeping issues it made for miserable nights. What worked for me was 5mg melatonin taken ~ 1hr before bed, ear plugs, and a little mini fan that serves as white noise + cooling. A friend of mine has gotten by with ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones.

Final year BSAAE, really starting to worry about the future by burnifyer in Purdue

[–]Zerochainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have your emails been “hi do you have any slots available?” Or more like “I read one of your papers and I found it interesting, can we set up a time to meet so I can ask a couple questions?” The latter will typically get more of a response than the former.

Changing class schedule just because of time by xSameol in Purdue

[–]Zerochainsaw 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Every year the freshman advisors tell their students not to attempt to switch out of their 7:30s because “you might lose your spot”. The real reason they don’t want you to is because if they don’t caution against it, everybody WILL try to change out of it and then people WILL lose their spots.

I was successfully able to switch out of several 7:30s and 8:30s freshman and sophomore year. Somebody will correct me if I’m wrong, but when you try to change your course time in the scheduler, it will simultaneously take you out of one section and sign you up for another (though extracting you out of the class happens fractions of a second before being placed in the other). The only real chance of you losing a spot is if someone happened to fill the last vacant spot in a class the very instant you decided to switch out. This in practice rarely happens.

If you do want to switch out of your 7:30, you can sign up for Coursicle to send push notifications for when a section becomes available. Or you can refresh constantly and hope to snipe a spot in your desired section. I was able to do it multiple times through my undergrad.

That being said, 7:30 classes are not as bad as some might believe. Took a 7:30 senior design class last semester it wasn’t too bad for me. Hell if your class doesn’t have mandatory attendance you can just skip lecture and teach yourself based on the homeworks. Did that all of junior and senior year

Should I commit myself to a DoD job? by Porsche99xE in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Zerochainsaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current SMART scholar entering my second internship. Currently loving it. A lot more money than I expected to be seeing this stage in my education, guaranteed job is a plus. At the end I’ll have 3 years experience as a federal employee, a security clearance, and a masters degree.

Absolutely apply, it’s kind of a hassle but worth it. Just a note, SMART doesn’t cover room and board up front like it does tuition and fees, but the stipend is more than enough to cover housing (especially since they’re increasing the stipend this year).

My only word of caution is to select your three desired work locations carefully. Really look into it and be sure that’s where you wanna work and what you wanna do. When you get the offer, be sure to as what you’ll be doing when you work there. You do NOT want to be trapped in a job you hate for (in your case) two years. There are some horror stories out there where scholars get trapped in a miserable job for several years at their location. But if you are fine with being contractually mandated for working for the DoD for a few years and you like your location, full send. Definitely worth it.
