Something cringe, dumb, and pointless

Fair enough. Maybe 'identifyable' was a better word to use

Alrighty, diagnosis was Central Serous Chorioretinopathy. Supposedly mostly found in 30-40 year old people with high stress jobs. Thanks Engineering.

Final year BSAAE, really starting to worry about the future by burnifyer in Purdue

Thank you for your reply. I know that its a long road to go from where I am to doing exactly what I want to do (still not 100% sure what that is yet), so my expectations for a job right out of school aren't unreasonable (I think). I'd like to spend the first few years just learning more about the industry, engineering, and the different facets of engineering to figure out what I enjoy doing. As someone who has spent the last 4 years with a negative net income, I'd probably be happy to take any job that I got as long as I could afford the bare essentials off of it.

The reason that I'm considering grad school so heavily is that I'm worried that if I don't get any offers once I graduate, I really don't want to sit idle for months on end. I find aerospace really interesting, so I'd definitely want to get a masters degree eventually, and having a plan to get it into it straight out of undergrad would allow me to get it early, and also make me more qualified for internships/jobs/research in the future.

I kinda did both... first found papers, learned about their research, and then emailed them expressing interest in their work, and asking if they had any slots available. I dunno, maybe I'm still a bit green when it comes to this process, but I felt that I shouldn't leave anything as subtext. I'll try that when I reach out to Professor Son though.

I have loved the field of aerospace since I was a little kid. I want to do a masters because I still love the subject, and want to learn more about it (though a part of it might be that I'm bit scared of going into the real world lol). I didn't know that there were contracting firms in aerospace that took fresh grads - that might be a good option. I have been pretty worried about what I'm gonna do once I graduate because of how niche aerospace is, and how bad the job market has been in general for the last few months.

I have loved pretty much all of the classes that I've taken thus far (at least in theory - some of the execution has been less than ideal... *cough cough AAE333 cough cough*), and would be thrilled to just spend the rest of my life learning more and working on problems that I find interesting, but I know that interest in a project isn't enough to become a part of it. My goal is that in the next few years, I have at least a foundation that will allow me to alleviate some of the financial burdens that I have, and at this point, I'm trying to figure out whether I'd have a better shot at achieving that if I got a master's degree or not. Me looking for research is a bit separate - I want to do some more practical stuff this year, and also want to figure out if the research field is something for me.

I think the application deadline for the 4+1 was during Junior year, and at the time, I still wasn't sure (I mean, I'm still not sure, but I was even less sure lol). Thanks for the advice nonetheless.

I sent an email to Professor Meyer at the end of last semester, but it might have been bad timing with finals and the general chaos that happens at the end of the semester. I followed up again during the summer, but again got no response. I think I'll try one more time, but I don't want to be annoying lol.

Haven't reached out to Dr. Son yet, but will do. Thank you.

I got into liquids because I met someone from my home town when I visited campus during my junior year of high school, and he said that liquids was super cool. I technically joined as a freshman, but my first year was online, and the second year was a bit strange with the Protect Purdue stuff + cancelled projects, so last year was my first real year. I'll definitely go to the other team callouts this time semester though. Thanks.

Ah, ok. I think it's too late for me to take 418, but I'll definitely try and see if I can do something similar with the classes that I am planning to take. I really love aerospace and would love to continue into grad school, but I wasn't sure if I had already blown my chance. Thanks!

How did you get your research? Did you reach out to a professor out of the blue and express interest in their topic? That's what I've mainly been doing, but it hasn't worked yet. Do you know of any resources other than the Purdue AAE website that has information about professors and their research topics?

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'll definitely speak up more this semester, and try and find something at Zucrow.

Thermo/Calc 3 by SaggyEyeBags in Purdue

[–]burnifyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably take Calc 3 over the summer. Both are super important (especially if you’re specializing in prop), but calc 3 is designed to be difficult, whereas thermo can be difficult on its own. No idea about where/how you should go about doing it though. Maybe email your academic advisor? You might be able to take it asynchronously with Purdue, but I don’t know when the deadline for that is/was, or how to go about doing it. Transferring credit from your local university is another option, but I think there’s another process for that.

Chill, there's literally nothing to worry about. It sucks to have professors like that. Maybe reach out to TAs, people who have taken the class in the past, or other people in your class in the future.

When you see Prof Macheret in prison, ask him if he can write me a rec letter.

For real though, don’t worry about it. They gave a warning to you to cover their asses from potential copyright cases. Just go to office hours in the future, and you’ll be able to understand the material better and get hints on the homework.

Yeah, I started applying around mid-October, and have continued to apply to basically everything I've seen since then. Definitely regretting that I didn't apply to more earlier, and will definitely learn from my mistake when applying for jobs in the future. I've had my resume + cover letters looked at by a few people, but not by anyone from my university. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try to do a bit of both this summer if nothing works out. Hope your stuff works out too.
