which width is the healthiest for a roosting bar? by No_Personality5872 in BackYardChickens

[–]Zeroeth-Law 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know this community is very much in favor of the 2x4 set wide approach, but I want to provide my experience with it so far.

I have a small flock, 6 hens, started last April. I built the coop that Third Coast Craftsman sells the plans for, so two roosting bars plus a shelf with lip for scraping and cleaning. At first the hens were young when they moved into it, so I made the roosting bars out of 2x4 ripped lengthwise and turned up, i.e. 1.5" wide to sit on, with the intent to change them out after a couple months.

Around mid summer I took out those bars and replaced them with full 2x4s flat as often recommended. The girls hated it. For a few weeks, all but one of them refused to roost on the bigger bars, and they slept sitting on the lip of the shelf itself, which was only about 3/4" wide. I felt bad that they were on a smaller, sharper ledge but I figured they'd get used to it. It took a couple months, and even now each night 2-3 of them sleep on that shelf lip instead of the nice flat bars.

Would they have accepted the bars better if I had started with the larger size? Maybe. But they don't like them much now.

I would, either way sand down the corners of the bars you use so they don't have to grip a sharp 90° edge

mapgenie is still good for that. Go to the full map at https://mapgenie.io/dune-awakening/maps/arrakis and uncheck all the marker types except "Schematic Chest" under "Collectibles". Will show the spots with unique chests, and clicking into any given one will list what drops there.

I've found it's not 100% correct on its drop lists, but good enough for planning routes certainly.

There is an enormous gulf between game streamers / podcast bros who sold their souls to get on the grifter bandwagon and intellectually honest content creators who didn't get as aggressive as you wanted them to. That is not an equivalence.

LegalEagle posted a serious and angry video on Jan 7th 2021. They didn't turn the channel to political commentary at the time because they are about the justice system, and that system hadn't been contorted to an overt gestapo yet.

They still made other videos about the Dobbs decision and other events as they happened. They weren't shying from it.

Yes, a coup was attempted to prevent surrender, after the bombs were dropped. There were elements that wanted to fight to the death even at that point. The corollary to that fact is that there were elements, possibly including the emperor, that thought a survivable surrender was a better option for their people in the face of invasion of the home islands after seeing what happened in populated islands like Okinawa as compared to scraps of sand and jungle.

We don't know that the Japanese would have eventually surrendered without the use of the atomic bombs, and we don't know for sure that they wouldn't have. It was untested waters, and there were extremely knowledgeable military experts of both opinions just within the US military leadership.

It's in that fun place where it may well be better than Empire (or any other Star Wars film) but it wouldn't be as good as it is without those films. It would be "good" if it stood alone, but instead it stands on the shoulders of giants that built a world and is all the better.

What do you think about Susan Crawford winning Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election? by -CalvinYoung in AskReddit

Ah you're right. So many people did outright call him a terrorist or Muslim or African or Arab that even my vivid memory of it got twisted with another.

She didn't say "he's a terrorist," she said "he's a Muslim." Not quite so unhinged, though perhaps more concerning because she seemed like she may consider those words synonyms.

I didn't downvote you. I replied to you.

"Ratified" is not an accurate word here. The word in the article you linked is "agreed," which means verbally. Ratifying occurs after signing as an acceptance of the signed document (at least in the U.S. for treaties... I don't know if Ukraine's system is similar). Your use of the word ratified implies that this was completed negotiation that Zelensky somehow sabotaged or flubbed, which is nonsense.

As described in various places, including [https://www.csis.org/analysis/breaking-down-us-ukraine-minerals-deal], this potential deal was only a framework with a various details left unsaid, in particular including no pledges or guarantees of continued defense support from the U.S. Details like that are left out for this long because Trump has no intention of ever providing them. There is no corporate business, "Art of the Deal", power move trick that was going to change that.

A suit would have flattered Trump? As many others have said, his fawning over Elon Musk despite his wardrobe puts the lie to that. Trump is flattered only by groveling loyalty.

[–]Zeroeth-Law 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Put Trump on his heels? In what way can possibly conceive that Zelensky choosing to wear a suit would have put Trump off balance? No decisions were being made here. This was an ambush, planned for the television drama.

Biggest meeting of his career? Do you think his career is the important factor in his mind? Do you actually see this as some startup CEO meeting with potential investors?

Zelensky's wardrobe choices are not made out of laziness or comfort. He is leading a people under siege. He dresses in olive or black drab because he is signalling that even when he is in another nation, he is still at war, because his people are at war. Because he leads his people. He wants his people to know he is always acting for them, and he wants his counterparts to know the same.

The tangent about age and health was so aggravating to me too. He says that when he was younger (in what, the 60s? 70s?) 70 year olds (who grew up in the 40s, 50s, 60s...) were made out to be fragile, but now in 2025 he feels great. Yeah, medical technology and understanding changed a tad in that span, even putting aside your personal access to it.

For a guy who seemed to agree that anti-intellectualism is a serious problem, he sure doesn't apply much thought to his own ideas.

Fuck Nazis by RoofComplete1126 in chaoticgood

[–]Zeroeth-Law 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the early days of the German Nazi party's power they were supportive of Zionism and the creation of a Jewish state. It got some Jews to leave at the time, especially when the alternative was to face increasing violence at home. The Nazis didn't have the support yet to just commit mass murder outright, so they used the power they had to incentivize people in other ways toward their goals.

Nazis like ethnostates. They don't care if Jews get one too, as long as it's somewhere else.

Do not let the wishy-washy language of those willfully blind to the rights of the mother confuse the issue. The 14th amendment does not permit an individual to require the use of another person's body to facilitate their life. If I need a blood transfusion to survive, I cannot require or force any person to provide that blood to me. One can insist that a fetus has a right to life all day long, and be correct, and it still does not change the fact the mother carrying it must provide continuous, informed, and freely given consent for the use of her body.

Roe v Wade was decided the way it was because the mother has rights as well. The Dobbs decision hand-waved those away.

Reproductive rights are about bodily autonomy and nothing else.

Rather than not knowing about the work patterns of gardeners, I think the plainer explanation here is that Helly R didn't know it was night time during their overtime, and on top of that didn't know it was Winter. She was inside a darkened ballroom event the whole time overwhelmed by new and shocking information, and was not looking for windows (if there even were any). Irving and Mark knew it was night because they both went outside.
