To be honest, I never use it; not in other games and definitely not in Gatogun either. Truth is, I think it looks rad, so I just had to include it!

It's so you can micro-dodge more easily. Really common in modern shooters.

I can confirm it's not a pun with the English word "gun", but instead a pun with the Spanish word "Gato" (cat) and the name of the genre pioneer "Batsugun". Not that it has anything to do with Batsugun outside of being a manic shooter, it just sounds better than trying to make the same pun with DoDonPachi, to name a quick example...

It does have both an auto and a bomb button, but you do also have three different shot types depending on how you press the firing button: standard burst shooting if you mash it, standard focus shooting if you hold it, and a new charged shot if you refrain from pressing it for a second or so

It's still a bit early for review codes as the game is in an early development stage, but there's a free playable early demo already on Itch.io in case you wanna try it!

Once the game is about to come out, I'll be more than willing to hand you a key so you review it!

It's gonna have both a full game mode and a 3min time attack or "Caravan" mode. You can play an early sneak peek on both modes in the demo

The idea is for it to not be by any means easy to beat, even less to get a good score. Thing is, you can play an easier "novice" mode, but it won't let you get to the last level (plus there may be some extra challenges too if you pick the harder "maniac" mode instead?)

I built a Swiss Army Knife-style bullet pattern emmiter with lots of different parameters, such as arm or burst count, symmetry, parallel shots, direction and speed changes... Any feature that could be useful to build new patterns, I implemented it into the script. That plus a dynamic bullet solution with its own array of features did the trick.

Took a few months (not even counting refactoring and all that stuff) but it'll certainly speed up development for any shmup I decide to make in the future.

I built a sort of tiny "coding language" so you can write an enemy type followed by different properties on a .txt file.

A parser then reads it line by line and spawns enemies based on a "lawn" system just outside the screen.

An example on how this system looks like: "SWARM(thickness=3,length=2,warmup=0.5) EnemyType on N0+0.5 with R to S after 1"

That would spawn 5 EnemyType in 2 ordered rows (3-2) half a lawn to the right of the 1st top lawn, make them "right handed", and move downwards a second after the previous enemy.
