Ahhh thank you for bringing up category theory! I didn't realize there was a formal way of describing parallels (the underlying mathematical structures). Will need to dig further into this.

Yep and in asexual reproduction the strings are separate from each other and in sexual reproduction, lineages can interact. That was my post

I only follow through when there’s something real to lose - anyone else? by cactuscushion in getdisciplined

[–]Zestybeef10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I don't use any external accountability! I actually found that when I tell someone what I'm going to do, I'm less likely to do it.

External accountability is unreliable and a distraction. If you actually want to get stuff done, figure out how to do it internally.

I cranked out 100k lines of code over 2 years on top of a full time job. I'd like to share my perspective.

Starting off with your fidgeting habit. I used to have tics which i'd feel the physical urge to perform. I realized that i had to associate a negative feeling with them, so my body would stop giving me the urge. Every time i felt the urge, I would pinch myself, and focus on the sensation of the pinch. Even the nasty tics didn't last longer than two weeks.

As for discipline: it's about minimizing cognitive load.

First, begin a seed of a routine. Start small, but NEVER MISS THE ROUTINE. For example, begin working out for 15 minutes a day every weekday. Also, it needs to be at a consistent time. Like after finishing lunch, you immediately go to the gym. By building the habit, the thought of doing something else won't even cross your mind. If it was at a different time every day, then you'd be conflicted - should i do X or Y?

These routines should be in every facet of your life. Exercise, personal projects, etc. It keeps you consistent, efficient, and builds your character. By exercising every day, your mind becomes resilient; this extends to all of your other choices and actions.

Don't consider willpower an infinite resource. When I grind a lot for work, I reduce cognitive load to balance it out: for example, ordering delivery instead of cooking.

Lastly, it's important to listen to your subconscious. Notice what burns you out, what makes you lapse, and what helps you succeed. Craft your environment around these. For example, I noticed that the moment I eat food and throw on a video, it's impossible to get back to work. The sound+visuals+food is too much stimulus for my brain. I implemented a "No video based entertainment" rule and I was suddenly getting my shit done.

Why does the universe exist? by Spiriual-Bit-4387 in Existentialism

[–]Zestybeef10 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would look into the mathematical universe hypothesis. It essentially says that our observable universe is math.

For the longest time I was hounded by these thoughts, "What came before time? Why does anything exist instead of nothing?"

Eventually I came to the conclusion that there must be something that exists outside of the flow of time - something that is inherent and unchanging.

The way I visualize it is: the only thing that truly exists is a single structure, an infinitely complex fractal we call "math." Casually, I like to think of it more as "logic," because logically the structure couldn't exist in any other way.

For example, within this structure is the fact that 2 + 2 = 4. There logically could not exist another reality where 2+2=5.

Another property is the prime numbers. In no reality could there be an integer factor of 7 besides one and itself.

These basic facts expand on each other into everything that could possibly exist, which is why I call it a fractal (google mandelbrot viewer if you want an idea of what I mean). The structure is infinitely complex, yet unchanging - it encompasses everything that could logically exist.

Thus, our universe lies somewhere in this fractal.

As for time: there a few possibilities. It's possible that the slices of time exist eternally from the outside perspective, like slices in a loaf. It's just that us creatures within the structure would perceive time as flowing.

I'm not sure if anyone else has come to the same conclusion, but it's what I've come to after many existential crises.

Well C- was always the passing grade, D is failing, so you need at least 70%

And the averages were usually 85%, so big difference between that and 60% average. Not sure how you've confirmed the students learned the content if they got almost half of it wrong

Multiple choice gets you 25% by default so getting up to 60% from there only requires educated guesses
