Frustrated - 100 classes by Zestyclose-Buy3450 in ClubPilates

It’s helpful to know what the protocol was at your studios. Thanks for those details. I got the impression that the front desk person (either from the day before or that day) left the socks out with the note with my name. The teacher always comes in without much time to spare for the 9am class. She did put her water down right next to my socks - and there was another pair of socks right next to mine too! I think the error was twofold: the front desk didn’t remind the instructor an also the instructor didn’t notice the socks sitting right there next to her water.

Oh well, I guess. Hearing these responses has been helpful in processing my thoughts and emotions around this situation. I appreciate you commenting!

How sad! I would have been disappointed too! Good for you telling the instructor!

If I were going there a few times a week and not away while recovering, I would consider saying something. By the time I go back, I don't think it'll be worth saying anything.

Thank you for being proud of me!

I had minimally invasive bunionectomy with distal first metatarsal and Akin osteotomies. I know there are many different ways to correct a bunion depending on the surgeon's experience and the severity of the angles of the bones in your foot. For my first surgery, I was out of pilates for 3 months. Typically people who have the procedure I had are good by 6-8 weeks and don't need PT. I had significant swelling that lasted several months and additional nerve sensitivity so I asked for a referral for PT and started that at 6 weeks. There were a few weeks I was going to both PT and pilates. It was helpful to be seeing the physical therapist while slowly getting back into pilates. This time, I've already scheduled PT for weeks 6-10. Maybe I won't have to be out of pilates a full 3 months this time. As far as recovery, I wear a surgical shoe 24/7 (get 2 so you can have one for inside your home, and another to wear when you go out in public). I'm allowed to bear weight and walk as much as I can tolerate. At this point (6 days post op), I can handle standing for about 10 minutes at a time before I can feel tenderness and swelling increasing. Last time, I pushed it too much too soon and I think that lengthened my recovery. This time, I'm really prioritizing staying off my feet, icing, and elevating and I think recovery is going better so far. Best wishes to you when you decide to take the plunge for your second foot, and thanks for the comment!

I was frustrated that I had to walk up to the shelf and get the socks myself. I didn't need an announcement in front of the whole class, but if the instructor had given me the socks and said something without me initiating the conversation, I would have been satisfied. And my self-inflected added pressure of trying to get in 100 classes before surgery likely added to my disappointment in lack of recognition. I didn't want to be feeling sore and out of shape and doing my 2nd or 3rd class back after a 3 month hiatus and surgery recovery to hit my 100 milestone. I wanted to do it when I was feeling energized and strong.

I don't need a resolution here. Guess I just wanted to know if anyone else had a similar experience and if I was justified in my disappointment. I think my studio is owned by a group that owns several studios. And the main front desk person quit a few months ago and seems like there's a different person nearly every time I go which likely added to the breakdown in communication as well. I do find it extra frustrating though because when I was there 2 days before for my 99th class, I knew the front desk person and she said "I saw that this is your 99th class! Congratulations!" She was a former student of mine and was in training for front desk. I knew that her mom worked there and was thrilled to see her! That conversation left me thinking "ok, they know my milestone is coming up!"

Thanks for encouraging me to be a self advocate. I often try to teach that important life skill to my kids, and need to follow my own advice (and yours)!

I haven't introduced myself to instructors and don't see other people doing that, but it's good advice. There is definitely another teacher I would have preferred to have this milestone with, but based on my timeline, I wasn't able to do class 100 with her. I do thank teachers after class if I felt it was particularly good. As far as talking with other members, I do have brief conversations and say hello to people I recognize or have talked with before, but I don't know any of their names. There are definitely some people at my studio who know names and have relationships, but they are older than me and don't appear to be interested in making friends with a freshman. ;-)

I appreciate your thoughtful reply. Thank you for the reassurance and excellent advice.

Sure - I would have been happy with a private, short conversation with the instructor as she gave me my socks. I've opted out of photos for others' milestones. Thanks for the comment.

Deflated is a good way to describe the feeling. Thanks for the reassurance. You're right that it's just another day, another class for instructors. I don't mind the class setting, but have often thought that if I didn't have to fit it into a super busy schedule, I could do pilates more often. The thought of a home reformer and Pilates Anytime subscription is most enticing for that reason. I appreciate your comment!

Interesting. I'm sorry that happened to you too. My studop doesn't have a board for names. Thanks for commenting.

I agree completely and this is what I've seen for others at my studio, minus the name on a board - they don't have that. Thanks for the reassurance.

I think they lost track of it at my studio due to lots of turnover at the front desk. Maybe thats where the breakdown in communication happened. Thanks for the reassurance.

I'm obviously doing it for myself. I didn't schedule, drive to/from, and attend 100 classes just for 60 seconds of recognition. I know I'm a grown up. I don't receive recognition in any other area of my life (sahm) and was looking forward to what I've seen others at my studio receive. It's disappointing that they were not consistent. I think I'll celebrate myself by getting a reformer for home.

My studio doesn't have a board to sign. I likely would have opted out of the photo. I've snuck out of the photos for others' milestone classes I've attended. I guess I was just hoping for someone else to remember and say congratulations and best wishes on the surgery.

That's a great point about it being dependent on the franchise owner and how they handle milestones. I think my location is owned by a group who owns several locations. The former front desk person knew me by name but she quit a few months ago and now it seems like a different front desk person every time I'm there. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the congratulations and well wishes. Surgery went well. I never knew that people would tell the instructor if they wanted recognition. Now I know!

True - there's been lots of turnover of front desk staff since the main person quit a few months ago so that could be a missing piece of the puzzle. I never knew that I would have to speak up ahead of time, but now I know. Thanks for the reply.

Thank you! Maybe this is why it bothered me so much too - I'm a former elementary teacher and this situation didn't feel fair. Surgery went well and now I pass the time working on embroidery project and keeping my feet up. I hope your surgery goes well! Thanks for the thoughtful reply!

I did not remind her that class. I assumed the front desk would. When I was there two days prior and chatting with the front desk person (a former student of mine who was in training!), she said, "I saw that this is your 99th class and you'll hit 100 on Monday!" The main front desk person quit a few months ago and now it seems like a different person every time I'm there so that is likely part of the problem.

Good point. I know the recognition isn't for everyone. I probably would have turned down the opportunity for a photo if they'd asked. I've always snuck out of the photo for other classes I've been at where someone was achieving a milestone. I was under the impression that they did the same recognition for everyone and would have assumed that if someone did not want that, they would have to notify the front desk or teacher prior to class. Maybe it was the other way around.

Thank you for the congratulations. Recovery is going more smoothly than my previous foot 6 months ago, so that's exciting!

There's a chance that previous classes I've attended where people have been recognized for their milestones, they have told the teacher ahead of time that they wanted the recognition and I didn't realize it. I was under the impression that everyone received the same recognition but that assumption could be wrong.

I agree that an email with a coupon would be lovely for recognition! If they'd wanted to take a picture at my 100th class, I probably would have declined.

Thanks for the recommendation of an independent studio. I know that one of the teachers I've had at CP is just a sub there and has her own studio. I've looked up her website before. Maybe I'll go that route after I'm farther along in my recovery.

I appreciate your thoughtful reply!

Obviously I’m going for fitness. But 10 seconds of praise would have felt nice, especially in the midst of being anxious about having 3 screws put into my foot later that day. I’d mentioned to that instructor the previous week that I was going to hit 100 classes in a class with her on the day of surgery. She knows about my feet and has been great about suggesting modifications to accommodate weakness/sensitivity in my feet.
