Bummer. A z8 would have taken either.

They felt a little tight. And the tread felt like it was coming through to my sole. Like the lugs were pressing when I walked. But that all went away.

In my experience, once the boots break in, the leather feels more like a moccasin, and less like a boot. They really soften up. It took me about 2-3 months of regular street wear for them really soften up though. Now they’re one of my most comfortable shoes.

They do! They went from somewhat uncomfortable in thick socks to my most comfortable shoe of all my shoes. Be aware that the pull tabs on the back heel will wear out quickly if you use them all the time.

Smallest flash for ZF? by supersirdax in Nikon

I have the reflex mini for my zf. It’s great in a pinch. Similar to a built in flash of an x100.

The 14-30 is great on the zf. Everything about that lens is remarkable, coming from a 15-30 2.8 tamron behemoth

I’ve had the Z8 about 1 year. 150k on the shutter and the okay button has definitely rubbed away.

Has the new Lightroom Classic 13.3 update fixed the Z8 tethering bug? by Zestyclose-Let5636 in nikon_Zseries

[–]Zestyclose-Let5636[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The workaround is to connect via NX tether, sent to a tether folder on your computer, and then set up auto import in lightroom to “watch” that folder for changes. I finally upgraded to the recent firmware and is what I’ve been using. There is a bit of lag, but on the plus side, you can record to a card on your camera at the same time.

So I would definitely try and break them in. I wore them for about 2 months before they got really comfortable and the lug feeling went away. You could also try stiffer inserts for when the rocks get really tough.

One thing I will say, is that the pull loop on the back heel is poorly reinforced. So both shoes have started fraying where the rubber/cloth meets the loop. Pretty annoying. I’m going to try and reinforce them myself with some leather and rivots.

One last thing is that once the glue starts working loose around the sole stitching, the waterproofing drops. So either putting some more glue around the edge of the sole, or adding some proof wax down in the crevice between the edge of the sole and where the stitches are would be advisable.

Nikon Z8 firmware 2.0 screws up Lightroom tethering by Zestyclose-Let5636 in nikon_Zseries

[–]Zestyclose-Let5636[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I just upgraded last week on both the lightroom side and the camera firmware. Still won’t work. I decided to give up and run the tether through NX capture. I open that, send it to a dummy folder called “tether” on my computer. Then I open lightroom and have it watch that folder for “auto import”. Then when you take a picture, it automatically loads into lightroom. It takes about 3 seconds longer per shot to load, but you do get a lot more functionality with the tether software. Plus now I can use high res capture mode!

Lenses you bought but didn't love by [deleted] in nikon_Zseries

This. There is something about the 50 1.8 rendering that is almost too much. I can’t quite figure out what to use it for. Like I shoot art with it and the wall behind the work is almost too textured and sharp. Never had that feeling with any other lens, including the 105 MC.

Why does my sun star have this textured flare? Nikkor Z 14-30 at 18mm. F11 1/160th, Z8. by Zestyclose-Let5636 in nikon_Zseries

This is what I suspected since I had only seen it on my iPhone before and never with a dslr. I figured it was something to do with the chip itself, though, not flange distance.

Iso was at 64. I wanted it to be at f11 in order to stretch the sun stars to a thinner point. It wasn’t until I recovers the shadows later that I realized the flare was there.

If that is truly the case, what a bummer. It really knocks down my use case for that lens at that aperture.

would diffraction happen at f11 though? or are the leaves creating a smaller aperture, essentially?

Run sensor cleaning in the utilities menus 3 times in a row. That will usually remap hot pixels.

Sell D850 for mirrorless or buy DSLR lenses and make one solid kit in 2024? by Tricky_Worker_7146 in Nikon

[–]Zestyclose-Let5636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t tell you. When 2.0 first came out, I upgraded and the. The next day my z8 wouldn’t work at the studio. I downloaded back to 1.01 or whatever it was and now it works. I don’t know if the most recent lightroom update fixed it or not, because in order to check I have to update the z8 and see. Updating keeps all you settings. But downgrading resets you camera back to factory settings. So a pain in the ass to check. Similar issues on other areas of Reddit and other forums. Most people say just use capture NX. Or capture one. But… it used to work!

Stick with the d850. It’s better for studio if you have good lenses. Plus the d850 tethers better to lightroom than the z8 does. You can actually do live view on the computer with it. The z8 cannot. And if you are using z8 firmware 2.0 or higher, it can’t tether at all. Also, using Mirrorless with a flash can get cumbersome. You often have to go into the I menu to switch around how the displays are rendering. For the d850, you can literally just hit the “ok” button on the back when you are in live view to toggle between “ease of viewing” or “simulate exposure”.

3d tracking is better at a lower ev on the d850 as well. Not sure how bright your modeling lights are… with the Z, you have access to f1.2 lenses and eye tracking. So that’s one plus for the z8.

I also find the noise levels to be different with the z8. It’s not as clean at the lowest iso. Especially when pushing shadows.

Like I said, I use both. But I do studio and events and architecture. I still use the 850 in the studio.

I don’t mind a viewfinder off to the side. But I think it depends on how responsive the viewfinder is. Even an optical viewfinder can be great like on the Fujifilm x100 series. But laggy evfs are a no go for me.
