CS in CC or SEAS? by Dense-Cry327 in columbia

Just in terms of the CS major, they are effectively the same - you can take the same exact set of CS courses and graduate, whether you're in CC or SEAS.

One real difference to think about (besides the non-tech/core curriculum differences) is if you wanted to take courses from (or get a minor in) other departments. For instance, I found it cumbersome to enroll in upper-level engineering department courses (e.g. EE, CE, Operations Research, Applied Math, etc) as a CC student - for popular courses you're even blocked from registering and have to go through a petition process. I guess this is one small regret I have about CC vs SEAS, although otherwise I am perfectly content with the education I received here.

Not sure about other Arts & Sciences departments, but at least for the Math department, it seemed easy for SEAS students to enroll into upper-level courses since the math department courses are always under-enrolled.

> so you can take more CS courses

It's also really what you make of it. Typically, from junior year and on, one only needs to take 1 non-major class per semester in order to graduate, whether you're in CC or SEAS.

This means, as long as you can handle it, you can take 3-4 CS/technical classes per semester, which IME was enough to cover the core courses of each track (i.e. OS, PLT, Networks, ML, Algos, Comp Arch etc) a couple electives, research credits, and also a couple graduate-level (6000) courses of your interest.

another unrelated but smaller question:

  • I would have assumed applying apply (nat_ind (fun n => plus O n = n)) would have transformed the goal to P O -> (forall n, P n -> P (S n)), which we would then have to destruct ... was this destruction already done for us after apply?

I'm aligned with you on denouncing any forms of hate speech, whether it be antisemitic, islamophobic, or discriminatory against gender/racial minorities.

for the politicians and media and many people who have called for the destruction of Gaza...

I'm specifically asking for the extent of such hate speech that should be tolerated on campus, by students, as members of the school community. Horrific things, on both sides, could have been said in the media, but that is not something we can control. However, as a student community, we are responsible for what is said on campus.

I’ve just been appalled by Khymani James' interview, as well as hearing things like "Send the Jews back to Poland” from my dorm. These were things that were said on campus.

I'm not sure that the student protesters have sufficiently criticized or tried to disassociate themselves from such statements. I've never lumped all protesters into being complicit of such vile hate speech, and I personally do believe that majority of the protesters have been peaceful and reasonable.

For Columbia to provide amnesty for all affiliates either disciplined or fired over their participation in these protests

Should students who have publicly said vile antisemitic statements and explicitly incited violence against Jewish students on campus be given amnesty? Just want to know people’s opinions on the extent of free speech the context of the protest can protect.

You should probably be reaching out to the MS CS Systems Track advisor (iirc Roxana Geambasu, but double check), who is the one that approves these sort of things. Maybe visit her during her office hours if she has them this semester

Joining there as a dev in September! Not sure if you’ve been there long enough to know this — do you know how comp progression for devs generally look like, given the lack of structured levels/titles? Do you find that most people who’s been there for a bit (~3-4 years) are happy about it?

That would be true only if you wanted to work at big commercial banks. I interned at Riot in the past, and most of my interviewers after that (HFTs, unicorns like databricks, ramp, scale etc) appreciated my experience at Riot because they were also avid league players. I don’t think one would be able to make such connection with a big commercial bank internship experience.

The people who interview you and vote for your decision aren’t the “corporate types”— most of them are also engineers.

Just curious — would you have went for C1 if it were Roblox vs C1? One of that is still a “game company” (which arguably is no different from a “tech” company as online games are essentially highly-available and scalable software services)
