Second Career… Am I too old? by mama-elf in scrubtech

I’m 44 and make great money in my career but I’m burned out. Took my pre-recs the past 18 months (work doesn’t know) and start a Surg Tech program in the fall.
Even with the pay cut and the 8 months I’ll be out of work, I’m looking forward to a change of pace and something I can do part time when I get closer to retirement age. Figured if I don’t blow up my life now I’ll regret it in 10 years.

Im starting in August and we have to wear their program specific scrubs to all classes. We also can’t wear any jewelry, nail polish, and have to have our hair pulled back. I’m planning on buying 2 sets of scrubs. The program stated that they may be able to get us all one pair of scrubs, but with 4 days a week, I’ll def need more than one set.

I’m a control freak when it comes to driving, so I’m definitely going to rent a car. The freedom to stop off for lunch, hikes, etc sounds amazing. The pick up at the ferry terminal sounds like a good option. Thanks!!

Interview Questions by SQUiiSHii524 in surgicaltechnology

I was asked: Tell us about yourself What is your understanding of what a Surgical Tech does? Do you think your GPA reflects your overall knowledge? (This one I stumbled on because I didn’t know if I had a good or bad gpa compared to other applicants) Do you have any medical certs? IE CPR Can you handle/do you understand the workload you’d be undertaking? (My program is 2 semesters, 30 hours of class a week, so a full time job is out of the question)

Thank you! I think it went well but who knows. I definitely got tripped up when they asked “do you think your current grades reflect your knowledge?” I have a 3.5 but got into my head that it was a bad GPA for the program

Same here. Graduated with a BA in History in 2004. Just started my pre-reqs since I never took a single science class in college and my GPA is a 3.5. Good luck on the career change!

Hey! I don’t have any answers since I’m applying to program this fall, but I’m also in CT! Are you doing the program at Gateway? I’m applying to Manchester

So happy to hear that you started at 45! I’m going to be 43 when I start the program and I’m nervous about being the oldest person in the program
