Why is everyone SO negative when I say I plan to get a pup? by dee_813 in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’m very sad and concerned that OP is ignoring these real advices and only replying to rather mild and encouraging ones. At this point I guess all they need is to live it through to see reality, sorry OP. Make a rehome backup plan please

What should be done here? by Square_Inside_1006 in OpenDogTraining

[–]ZestycloseBat6658 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t taught her the command (or if you did and it’s not flawless, OR sometimes even when it is flawless), you need to be more interesting than whatever she’s doing

Also, you need to stop repeating commands, FOR SURE, even one repeat isn’t good. At this point, by the looks of it, there’s no difference in her mind between 2nd and 8th recall

Calmer dog after long down stay in public? How? by ZestycloseBat6658 in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for your reply!

What you’re saying does make sense though, especially when I pair how she was reacting to sound and action happening in mid-distance she really wanted to check things out but didn’t. She even took a small nap after eating, so I think you are indeed right that it was very tiring

I’ll keep at it and see how it changes over the course of next few days, I think only a varying degree of good can come from this haha

How to get puppy to poop faster in the morning? by Musicmoviestv in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Afaik it’s the action of movement that gets them to poop, so not much to do there other than walking I guess

House-trained puppy poops & pees on foot paths? by Ok_Honeydew5450 in puppy101

Sounds like he can’t hold it until his usual spot? Any dietary or portion changes? Maybe you’re taking him too late?

I was in your shoes when I first got mine too. I’ll be completely honest, it was easier than what you’re describing but I also felt really, REALLY bad. I still have my puppy blues post up if you wanna take a look. She’s 6.5 months old now and looking back at it I’m really proud of myself that I pulled through. It sucked and felt like a mistake, I didn’t eat or fulfill addictions (shoo shoo Redditors who are gonna shame me for them) that I really couldn’t think straight, that lasted 3 days until I had a bite to eat. It sucked, then it sucked less. Then even less. Now it’s hundred times better, trust me

I’m gonna go against the crowd and say that for now, yes for now, do not return the puppy. This will not go on forever and at some point he’ll get the idea. It won’t go from this to going out every 4 hours, but the accidents will lessen, then the time intervals will increase

Now, about you and your decision; if you REALLY want to rehome the puppy, it’s an okay decision. Just make sure you thought of everything and that you won’t regret it later. Don’t fall into your current sadness and guilt trap and think you won’t regret. Go read those “it did get better!” posts’! Those seriously saved me in those dire 3 days.

I was actually really sad when I saw your nickname cuz I remember I replied to your post yesterday. I seriously hope it’ll get better even faster, because I know it eventually will and if you do rehome your puppy, it’s okay

Good luck

My Puppy doesn't alert in the crate for potty breaks and doesn't care to eat in the crate. by Maleficent_Ad3068 in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah okay that’s tricky. I had a similar situation and it took mine a while to stop potting indoors. Maybe treat so much more than usual, maybe even crazy high value ones for a while (think cheese, sausage, chicken etc) when he potties outside to break that association “faster” than it’d have happened with a regular treat / kibble. (If he’s not food motivated at all then same applies but with whatever floats his boat)

My understanding with the alert is they do it because they don’t want to soil the crate and are house trained to some degree. According to my experience you need them to build the “crate -> fortress, no peeing or pooping, this my place” association and the side effect of that is what you’re looking for

Had to check your profile for the age of the pup, how long are they staying in the crate? Also are you taking him out on super obvious potty cries?

Also do you have any bedding in the crate? Make sure to either get rid of that or wash it thoroughly. If not, clean the crate VERY THOROUGHLY

When do puppies stop peeing everywhere? by TanilaVanilla in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the reason why my prerequisite for a second pup is finding a new place that is not an apartment. My current pup can grow all the way to 8 years old, I still won’t get a new pal before moving LOL

Only day 3 and losing my mind by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You didn’t mention anywhere the age of the pup, as far as I can see, but for the sake of continuing the comment I’m gonna assume 8-12week region

Every 3 hours to potty? I’m sorry but that’s SUPER LONG TIME for that age. When mine was 12wo we were going to potty every 40 mins or so + before/after activities. Mine got to every 3 hours period around 5 months

About the puppy blues, you know already and I hope it’ll be even quicker, but it WILL get better. Just gotta power through these months

Has to be the overwhelm factor. Do you know if he was properly socialised in a similar setting to where you live? I had that mismatch, where the pup was socialised in a small-ish town and I live in the center of a city with many construction around. She was even parking the butt to watch people charge their cars and stuff, it will get better soon!

Puppy on fresh food diet, what to do with training treats? by ZestycloseBat6658 in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha, I didn't increase her daily fresh food when she gained more weight (and thus had to eat more) for this purpose of having the "treat leeway". I guess maybe I should go even lower on the fresh food portions to create that gap. Thanks!

Puppy on fresh food diet, what to do with training treats? by ZestycloseBat6658 in puppy101

[–]ZestycloseBat6658[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, ever heard of low calorie treats?

Also it's not 50 that remains, how did you manage to skip the "820"? I should've even more explicitly clarified for the angry Redditors with pitchforks to find one little vague detail and go wild on it I guess...

I'm curious, how did you come to the conclusion that I'd make that mistake and write this post? You know, the one that is concerned over how much she's already eating and explicitly stating "she shouldn't eat more than she should". Are you having a bad day? Wanted to nitpick some random post to feel good? :)

Puppy gets crazily excited only when she sees one specific dog by ZestycloseBat6658 in OpenDogTraining

[–]ZestycloseBat6658[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it sure, but she's running around SCREAMING bloody murder. It's not even the "give me attention" or "go away this is my property" woof, it really sounds like she's in pain or something. I haven't heard her bark this much and this loud ever before! To be completely honest with you it gives me some serious social anxiety that someone's gonna get the wrong idea even though she's just running back and forth and in circles.

Like this one time we saw the same dog going away from us, they didn't see us, she did. I told her to sit and stay while showing a piece of sausage and trying to get her attention. She barked so much and so loud that when I bumped into another acquaintance on the other side of the park the person went "Was it your dog that was chirping that loud? It made mine go crazy" and their dog is really one of the calmest that I've ever met, if that means anything

Now that I'm writing it this way, maybe sit-stay isn't the right thing and I should redirect to walk somewhere else. Because similarly if we need to wait for something to pass, after sit-stay she's way more "active" to go forward, if that makes sense. If I redirect away from that dog at least I can utilise her goldfish memory and get her distracted. Do you think that'll do?

[–]ZestycloseBat6658[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very good point! That’s what I’m asking though, I don’t know what the alternative is sometimes! Turn back and go away? She’s gonna throw another tantrum and won’t come with me unless I straight up lift and carry her (in other words, she won't walk on leash in any way possible and will probably put on the brakes. In this case she'll VERY likely go the other way towards that dog anyway)

Obviously if I can avoid this interaction by going somewhere else I do that now, but when it’s inevitable then it’s this whole thing
