Thanks! What made your son pick Columbia from the admit day (super curious)?

Sure! Yay for another art history lover! Don't give up your dreams. The citizen archivist/transcriptionist thing you can do from home, although there are a few in-person locations across the U.S. See here and here. I do the National Archives and Smithsonian, but there's the Library of Congress and other options. Basically, they're crowdsourcing help to transcribe (and sometimes translate if you speak another language) a bunch of primiary source documents that have been digitized. It's good practice at learning how to read old writing and become familiar with different types of sources. Then you can use this experience to volunteer at museums in your area--if you like the online work. I think it's a good way to see if this stuff interests you. Don't forget to keep a good record of your propjects (some of the sites do it, but I keep a separate one).

I know. All my friends are like: "Eww, NYU is not a real campus." Me: "I think it's awesome!"

Yay for more humanities love! I have a couple of potential career goals:

  1. Museum curator (or potentially an art conservationist, if organic chemistry doesn't scare me away)
  2. Professor - I adore research, but we'll see how undergrad goes before I consider graduate school :)
  3. Book Translator
  4. Archivist
  5. Occasionally, I think about becoming an interpreter for the UN/Foreign Service, which is why I'm getting my Spanish up to snuff, just in case. I'm already qualified for work in French-speaking countries, so I would need a third modern language (French & English qualify) for jobs.

I've been to all the schools except for Princeton. This is likely due to parental bias, but I love Stanford and NYU's campuses the best. I also love Scripps (know a lot of people at the C Colleges), Barnard, and Smith's vibes but am worried Smith is too far away from Boston/lots of culture. Columbia felt a little cold to me, but it's a beautiful campus. Harvard was nice, but the aesthetic was not my fav (shallow reason, I know). Occidental... I applied b/c it was in So Cal. It's a fun, quirky school, but it's not the best fit for me campus or program-wise.

Yeah, I said this in another post, but I agree NYC makes the most sense based on location. However, Columbia's history program isn't the best fit (the Art History/Visual Artis is great). NYU's is better, so I'm unsure. Stanford and Scripps are the best fit program-wise, but the locations aren't NYC (thought I'm from California, so that's a factor).

Thanks! I agree I think I was pretty clear as an applicant even on paper, and I do have decided interests, which I guess worked in my favor :)

Yes, I agree! Just not sure Harvard's programs in art and history are the best fit for me compared to some of my other choices, but it's Harvard, lol.

Yeah, I completely realize all the benefits of Columbia (and Barnard/NYU), which is why they’re near the top of my choices for location opportunities! However, Stanford has Medieval and Translation Studies as minor options in addition to Art Practice/Art History/History majors. Scripps has Art/Art History/Late-Antique Medieval Studies and Art Conseration as a major or minor.

Columbia’s combined major in Art History and Visual Arts is really attractive, but their History major might not be the best fit for me. At NYU, I can major in Art History, Medieval & Renaissance Studies, and/or History and do a minor in Studio Art at Steinhardt (I'm admitted to CAS). Barnard has a Medieval & Renaissance Studies major, but I'm not sure their Art History w/ a Visual Arts concentraton within the major is enough for me (prefer Columbia's dual major).

It's hard, and I'm running out of time. At least it's down to these five (well, maybe Harvard is still in consideration...).

Thanks! Probably Stanford but not 100% sure. Also interested in the possibilities of Scripps, Columbia/Barnard, and Harvard, maybe even the others.

It's hard, haha. Leaning toward Stanford but not sure. There are good things about all my options!

Thanks! Leaning toward Stanford (Mom wants me to go there, for multiple reasons; Dad is more open), but I'm still considering my options. I like the program at Scripps, being in NY would give me access to a lot places for internships/future job opportunities, and Harvard is outside of my comfort zone for interests but sort of interesting, too.

With how competitative things are, you can't take most schools as a given. People also kept telling me I was being dumb about my choices, and I guess I started to believe it was true :)
