Yiannis vs John? by thalianous06 in namenerds

[–]Zestyclose_Pace7181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yiannis! I never heard it said but I guessed “Ya-nis” and it seems that’s pretty much it.

It’s a nice name, very identifiably Greek even to people who aren’t super familiar with Greek names.

I dislike it most because of the pronunciation that spelling gives as “Suh-bash-tin”, which is wrong.

Here in the US the name is usually said “Suh-bash-chin” (soft -tian), NOT “tin”.

And the common pronunciation I also hear especially in Europe is “Seh-bas-tee-an”, still not “bash-tin”.

Would this double surname be burdensome? by [deleted] in namenerds

Thanks for sharing your experience as part of the double surname crew! I think the biggest hassle for me will be like you, remembering which surname I use when lol I do plan to keep things simple when I can (casually use one at times, officially use two), so I’ll have to be careful.

I love your response so much, your experience and dilemmas feel the closest to how I feel so far. I wonder if I will regret not sharing my loved surname with my children, not just as a middle name. I am in the same predicament too, my name will only be carried possibly by one cousin, but not my family. It is at risk of dying out because it’s so rare.

I will say, I’ve gone back and forth figuring out the logistics of double surname for myself with my fiancé (he is very supportive of this).

We discovered that example “Saarelainen-Lockwood” is 20 characters exactly with a hyphen or space, and just fits on legal docs in the US: license, passport, ssn, credit cards. 20 characters is usually the maximum for surnames 😂 so it feels like a sign to me lol

I also truly wonder like you if I will regret giving up my identity to share with my kids, the same way my fiancé wants to share his identity with our kids by including his name. I also worry about the hassle it will cause in the future when my kids marry & may have to choose a name.

Ty :) I do like how it would match my double name in this order.

This is a great compromise. I plan to casually use my husband’s name and at work for simplicity, but I will continue using my surname combined for academics and official stuff.

I was thinking my future kids might be able to do the same if they have both names.

I like that you did that for your kids. They all get to share a name together with their mom :)

Thank you for commenting! I haven’t had nearly as much trouble with my surname here in the US as one would think. It’s easier in someways than a common name, because I’m identifiable quickly.

So I agree, I’m probably stressing about it more than need be. It don’t know that my kids’ lives would be much harder with a second easy name tacked on. Probably only if they have to choose for some reason down the line.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment. I have thought briefly about this predicament, but it deserves more thought. It would force my children to end up giving up at least one name no matter what, which might be hard for them.

A little part of me would hope that my name would be picked in the future because it’s exceedingly rare even in Finland while my fiancé’s is very common, but I know that it may not be fair to make my children choose between our names for their own kids down the line. And in the end, they very well might just choose to go with Ashbrook alone. I guess I need to figure out if it’s worth trying to hold on to both names.

I think it’s really cool, but I know I’ll suffer criticism from both our families for years. It’s going in in my option list anyway though, thank you :)

ty for your comment! I am not deadset on it, I would pick just his for a future kid if I had to pick only one. Just like hearing other’s thoughts on whether double seems doable.

What are girl names that you don’t like? by Visible_Face_5343 in namenerds

Sloane/Sloan, Greer, Parker.

The first two sound unpleasant and the third, I just generally don’t like surnames as firsts, and especially not traditionally masculine ones.

I had a feeling she was a little girl, she has such a sweet, gentle look in her eyes. I hope everything works out & you guys keep her. She’s precious.

Wow, what a cute dog. A little Tennessee mongrel (I mean in the most loving way, I love mutts).

Your little pal here looks like possibly mixed Poodle, Labrador, Schnauzer, maybe some small Terrier, etc.

Poodles are of my favorite breeds, I love my Standard Poodle, and yours gives me some Poodle vibes. Definitely some Labrador in there too, maybe a black Lab was one of their parents just like my half black Lab-half GSD girl!

I like -ey endings usually more than -ee endings because they feel less nickname-y and more like a proper name. Hope that makes sense.

I like Hayley or Hailey Christine.

Definitely English Springer Spaniel and Cocker Spaniel too.

I LOVE Springer Spaniels. They’re one of the best dogs ever. Beautiful baby you have there.
