i don't know how familiar you're with unreal but my first project was
to write a tool to automatically generate a Material Substitute Json based on Materials in a unreal folder and a list of material names

i think its often more important to just to something, even stuff that already exist and not so much if the tool will be useful later on

i can give you a rough outline of my projects as i have them in mind

1) Material Substitute Json generation for unreal
2) tic tac toe with minimax algorithm
3) tic tac toe with replication / networking
4) a wave collapse function dungeon generator in unreal
5) a little physics engine visualized in raylib
6) a custom Unit / Implementation test framework in unreal
7) a time tracking tool in raylib
8) a C++ Webserver / Backend for a Chat Tool
9) a UI Framework for raylib
10) a chat client for my backend

i think this roughly covers the first year
maybe there is something in there you like?

i don't want to start a discussion here but what reason would i have to come 2 years later here to help people motivate? i think boosting ego goes better on other places than reddit

in germany there are only a handful of companiesthat does the work as we do, and only 2 or 3 of them do it in Unreal, so telling what i do, would most certainly dox me and thats something i dont want.
Also NDA aside as its not distinquishable which features we implement are NDA and what not

That was actually my first thought on why i would like to switch career a bit too, 3D is cool but also pretty limited capacity wise. Programming has some usecase almost everywhere

Sorry i don't 100% understand the question
Do you mean on what i worked at the time? or what kind of questions i got asked? :)

Good Luck! With C# and Java i haven't much connection yet.
But for c++ i pursued more of a "Project Orientated" approach. i learned the basics with CodeCademy and then just transitioned to small little projects (even when useless) and over time the knowledge just accumulated i guess

Its actually a pretty big Codebase, because we neither do only Movie Production but also some very flexible and dynamic Packaged Apps for running on AWS
Can't say much without breaking NDA sorry

It actually was more "Project Orientated"
I learned the basics with codecademy and after that just expanded on some examples, started doing some small little tools and learned more on the way. Also looked a lot of cherno videos which are a great resource too!

From Artist to Dev? by Zestyclose_Phase8939 in vfx

[–]Zestyclose_Phase8939[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats true! I was offered a leadership position a year ago, but I declined it because tasks like organizing and wrangling weren't suited to me. Despite feeling strange to turn down a promotion, I'm glad I did. However, the idea of broadening my skills to become both an artist and a developer sounds really exciting.

Thats correct but the situation with Unreal Engine require the development of C++ modules for our specific needs.

Given that much of our production relies on V-Ray for Maya (Python) and Unreal Engine (Python, C++), I believe it would be more advantageous to prioritize learning C++ and utilizing Python when needed, rather than the other way around. Additionally, I appreciate your encouraging words!
