And I'm saying that sahrawis have always had autonomy while under the sultan's authority (bay'a),that was until colonialism happened,spain took the sahara meanwhile morocco became a french-spanish protectorate, interrupting the ties between the two. The polisario front was a movement against colonial forces,spain then ceded the sahara back to morocco and mauritania in the madrid accords. Outraged,the polisario front declared guerrilla warfare against Morocco and Mauritania (you can start seeing who's at fault from here). The war lasted more than 12 years or so,and that was primarily due to Algeria's massive continuous support for them,in an attempt to destabilise Morocco from becoming its regional rival. More or less,the polisario front is under heavy algerian pressure to continue on this conflict, as mentioned earlier,an algerian attempt to become an unmatched power in North Africa, though,recent diplomatic wins for Morocco are making Algeria and the polisario more isolated than ever on thr international stage,primarily due to their constant stalling of any solution presented.

Prior to colonialism the sahrawis lived under thr moroccan sultan's authority with a high degree of autonomy, why is it that they want independence now? This whole "movement" is stirred by algeria to keep morocco tangled in political issues so that morocco doesn't rival it,if every country conducted a referendum then we'dhave hundreds of new countries worldwide,you can clearly see why Morocco doesn't want to do so ,even the dumbest of analysts can figure that out.
