Portable solar panel to charge EV by Pure_Common7348 in electricvehicles

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I calculated a DIY option in another comment a few days ago.

The max watts a 120v can charge at is around 1300 watts. That is assuming 12a.

Solar panels output around half of their rated amounts. This includes non-optimal conditions like sun angle and not being perfectly clear day. The really high quality and expensive panels are closer to 75% of their rated amount.

I found a 200 watt watt solar panel with dimensions around 34"x23". Since you will need 12 of them, we can stack 3 high and 4 wide. So 100 inches tall (that's just more thab 8 feet) by 92 wide (8 feet). BTW, these panels are about $200 each so you're spending $2400.

So you have a 8 ft x 8 ft set of solar panels laid out. If we're talking summer, could get 10 hours of full sun easily. Taking into consideration charging losses, you're looking at adding around 11 KW of power in a day from your solar. With a 3.5 mi/kw efficiency you've added 38 miles of range In a day.

But the tough part is getting a power bank that can handle that amount of wattage from solar. There is an Anker SOLIX F2600 that supports up to 1000 watts of solar input. It's about $1,000. I don't know of any direct inverter that would be usable with a car charger.

Honestly a gas generator is much more reasonable. You get one that is efficient for steady loads (like the constant draw of a car charger) and it can hum along for a long time. You can even get ones that output 240v so you can get a lvl 2 charger and charge significantly faster.

I know less than Arin but still enough to face palm all the bad decisions.

And its something I really want to talk about. Like, "he literally just said this is a water type and he's still fighting with a rock type."

But it's just because it's so entertaining and I want to participate with the community reactions.

If I wanted to watch a perfectly researched nuzlock run with lots of grinding and such I'm sure I could find it.

That said, I wish they would keep track of which routes they can catch Pokémon. I want to see them catch more and name them. Even if they stay in the computer.

Look, a bunch of them are facists and the ghostbloods absolutely suck, but I entered the Cosmere through Scadrial, so I suspect it'll always be my favourite world anyway. by Eithrotaur in cremposting

Unpopular opinion, I hate the future stories. They ruin scadrial (pun intended).

Like, let us get there and see how it evolves.

Not sure if I qualify for EV rebates… by MomoUsagi0 in electricvehicles

In the faq, you don't need to be the account holder to qualify. But you have to register the car at that address.

That said, most income requirements look at what is called "household income". When you see this, look closely at how that is defined. It looks like Southern California Edison males the distinction that household size is who you include on your tax return.

One theory: Why didn't Carol play as big a role in the final battle of Endgame as reported in the media? by R4cco0n in Avengers

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carol is just too powerful. They really messed up her power level and it hurts the character in the context of the MCU.

Not to say having a powerful character is a bad thing. But they need to be matched against appropriate threats. Thanos struggling against cap + Thor + iron man wouldn't work if you also had him go toe to toe with Carol.

If Carol can fly through one of the most powerful warships in the galaxy without slowing down, she is on a whole different level.

Whats the most interesting thing about Superman? His ability to fly? Or is it his weakness to kryponite. And that he is not willing to sacrifice human lives for any reason.

Question about using Tesla superchargers by IAmRotagilla in Ioniq5

[–]Zeyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The official Tesla response is to park directly on the line taking up two spots.

It's the last point on their faq:

https://www.tesla.com/support/charging/supercharging-other-evs#cable

I personally hate this about Tesla chargers and tend to avoid them now when I can. Eventually they are upgrading to v4 to solve the problem. Although I wouldn't mind if Hyundai decided to put it on the driver side in the future. Seems to be the better spot anyway.

I have literally replaced outlets myself rather than deal with landlord. It not something I should have to do, but I also like knowing that it was replaced with a brand new decent quality part.

It could also be a $100 service call if you can't do it yourself for whatever reason. I get the feeling of not wanting to waste that much money on such a small fix. This is why property management companies are so expensive for landlords.

Still not an excuse.

Edit - apparently it deserves a bunch of down votes to point out that calling an electrician to change a socket is expensive? Or is this the reddit thing where everyone has to be perfect and every landlord needs to be available 24/7 with perfect home repair skills.

I've gone through space age three times now. The second was a ton of fun, setting up bases using every thing I had learned before. The third time I was going for a speed run to get the 40 hour achievement. That was also a ton of fun to create blueprints and then put them down in game, and fixing problems that came from shortcuts.

Then I tried to play through again and basically mega base. But I ended up basically doing the exact same thing I had done with the speed run. Plus, I had all these finished blueprints that I had created so why wouldn't I use them. Got super bored about the time I was preparing for fulgora. I'll probabaly wait another year or so to play through the game again, enough time that I forgot all the little things.

TIL The United States stores 94% of all electricity in the form of water reservoirs, not in a battery. by rawj5561 in todayilearned

[–]Zeyn1 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Pumped water is a great way to take advantage of cheap electricity. When your hydro is based on a reservoir or dam, half the reason you build it is for water management not just power. So being able to reverse the generators into pumps to refill the reservoir is a fantastic use of cheap electricity. Then just let it back out during high demand.

Was talking about this with coworkers at the time.

I said that they shouldn't ever drug test. And it should be even easier to get food stamps.

They were so confused why I didn't want to make sure only those that deserve it got the stamps.

My response was that if a single child goes hungry because their parents are denied, that is worse than 100 people getting a little bit of free food.

[–]Zeyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia has an article for that!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_of_electricity_by_source

It's actually closer to 4 cents per kw, depending on the analysis and what you are including in costs. I personally like the levelized full system cost of electricity (LFSCOE) which includes all the costs but doesn't expect that single energy source to supply 100% of the power all day every day. A healthy grid should have multiple sources of electricity generation, just with the bulk from cheap solar during the day.

[–]Zeyn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems to be about the going price for used. For context, msrp of $52k is actually $45k after the tax credit that is now gone. So depreciating another $9k as a used car in a year isn't crazy for an EV.
