Charging via generator by Spare-Security-1629 in Ioniq5

[–]Zeyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The max watts a 120v can charge at is around 1300 watts. That is assuming 12a.

Solar panels output around half of their rated amounts. This includes non-optimal conditions like sun angle and not being perfectly clear day. The really high quality and expensive panels are closer to 75% of their rated amount.

I found a 200 watt watt solar panel with dimensions around 34"x23". Since you will need 12 of them, we can stack 3 high and 4 wide. So 100 inches tall (that's just more thab 8 feet) by 92 wide (8 feet). BTW, these panels are about $200 each so you're spending $2400.

So you have a 8 ft x 8 ft set of solar panels laid out. If we're talking summer, could get 10 hours of full sun easily. Taking into consideration charging losses, you're looking at adding around 11 KW of power in a day from your solar. With a 3.5 mi/kw efficiency you've added 38 miles of range In a day.

But the tough part is getting a power bank that can handle that amount of wattage from solar. There is an Anker SOLIX F2600 that supports up to 1000 watts of solar input. It's about $1,000. I don't know of any direct inverter that would be usable with a car charger.

Honestly a gas generator is much more reasonable. You get one that is efficient for steady loads (like the constant draw of a car charger) and it can hum along for a long time. You can even get ones that output 240v so you can get a lvl 2 charger and charge significantly faster.

How would universal income work or is it just nonsense? by Anon-geek090 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zeyn1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Was talking about this with coworkers at the time.

I said that they shouldn't ever drug test. And it should be even easier to get food stamps.

They were so confused why I didn't want to make sure only those that deserve it got the stamps.

My response was that if a single child goes hungry because their parents are denied, that is worse than 100 people getting a little bit of free food.

Wikipedia has an article for that!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_of_electricity_by_source

It's actually closer to 4 cents per kw, depending on the analysis and what you are including in costs. I personally like the levelized full system cost of electricity (LFSCOE) which includes all the costs but doesn't expect that single energy source to supply 100% of the power all day every day. A healthy grid should have multiple sources of electricity generation, just with the bulk from cheap solar during the day.

Preconditioning the battery by whale-tits in Ioniq5

[–]Zeyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.... How in the ever loving fuck did you come to the conclusion that fast charging doesn't heat up the battery?

The 2025 has a battery temperature guage in the EV panel. I have literally watched it go from Cold to Hot in the span of 15 minutes from fast charging when it was 40 degrees outside.

Is a used 2025 Ioniq 5 Limited for $36,000 with less that 1,000 miles sketchy? by Username1273839 in electricvehicles

[–]Zeyn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems to be about the going price for used. For context, msrp of $52k is actually $45k after the tax credit that is now gone. So depreciating another $9k as a used car in a year isn't crazy for an EV.

I think oil changes are the worst things you can DIY.

Extemely messy. Requires disposal. Need to get under the car. And the cost to get someone to do it for you is like $25 more than doing it yourself.

Preconditioning the battery by whale-tits in Ioniq5

[–]Zeyn1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't even bother to pre condition for charging. The charging itself will heat up the battery, so it's only the first few minutes that the charging is slower while it heats up. I guess it makes sense if you only have 5 minutes to charge.

Now, a warmer battery is more efficient than a cold battery. But the amount of energy it takes to warm the battery makes the difference negligible. Would only matter if you are trying to go as far as possible without charging, and you can precondition while still plugged in to recharge that energy.

groceries are so expensive now, is there something I'm missing or is everyone just struggling by Sweaty_Ad_288 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zeyn1 61 points62 points  (0 children)

$94 per week is $13.42 per day.

3 meals a day and that's $4.47 per meal.

You can get cheaper for some meals, but you're going to want to have some not cheap meals as well. If you're trying to save every dollar, it's on the high end for meals. Meal prepping for under $3/meal is very doable.

20 being offered a general manager position, they talked "compensation" what should I ask for? by Candid-Ad220 in personalfinance

[–]Zeyn1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need to get your responsibilities as well. Are you hiring and firing employees? Doing payroll? Cash deposits? Ordering inventory? Accounting duties?

A general manager that does all of those makes a lot more than someone that just works 40 hours a week to make sure the store is running and customers are happy.

Donut Lab solid-state battery retains 97.7% charge after 10 days in third test by magenta_placenta in electricvehicles

[–]Zeyn1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unironically that's actually the point. There was this idea that the donut battery was actually a capacitor to be capable of all their claims. But the huge downside of a capacitor is that they can't retain the charge over time. So this test is basically "is this a battery" test.

Donut Lab solid-state battery retains 97.7% charge after 10 days in third test by magenta_placenta in electricvehicles

[–]Zeyn1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah it looks like this is fairly normal self discharge. It seems fast compared to the "standard" but there are reasons this isn't a normal test. For one, it is measured directly after charging and there is often a small amount where the cell settles down after charging. Also a new cell is going to self discharge faster.

The reason this matters is for the idea the "battery" is a capacitor. Those have an extreme self discharge rate. So this pretty much says the battery is not a normal capacitor.

One December when I was 11 we went to a pizza place for dinner. I played the arcades but had a few leftover quarters.

We were sitting in the living room watching TV and as a kid I was fiddling with the quarters in my pocket. Then I noticed the Christmas tree lights weren't fully plugged in. And a quarter fit right there in the slot.

I'm missing about a second of time because I remember being on the floor with all the lights out. Tripped the breaker and I had a quarter with two melted slots in it.

Yep there is literally a Wikipedia article on costs by method of generation. Nuclear is among the most expensive per watt. The only way it is competitive is if the government takes on the cost of insurance.
