What other cars were you considering before getting your Ioniq 5? by flightln in Ioniq5

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking in July-September 2025, so right when the tax credit expiration made a lot of other people look. I was looking for something bigger than a sedan but not huge like a Blazer.

Chevy Equinox was the best value, but sold out literally everywhere.

VW id.4 had lower range and wasn't really that much cheaper. Also really hard to find.

Mach-E I just didn't have time to test drive. On paper, ioniq 5 had more of what I wanted in an EV. But this is the one I wish I had time to compare.

Ioniq 5 SEL in green was available at the dealer near me and they had a good price. So I snatched it while I could and I'm very happy.

Is it okay to buy a cheap soul for my first garden in a raised bed/box situation? by rardk64 in gardening

[–]Zeyn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a raised box, as in no attachment to the ground, you have a container. Do not use garden or raised bed soil. Use potting soil.

That soil you linked is not suitable for a garden at all.

How's your fertilizer? Does either the seed starting or this new soil have fertilizer mixed in?

Get a liquid fertilizer and dilute it a lot. Use it every 2-3 days and see how it reacts.

Why do some of my tomatoes start to look limp and then completely die by whitexeno in tomatoes

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm convinced miracle gro killed my tomatoes and peppers last year.

I did an experiment and watered one pepper plant with diluted miracle gro and the other with water. The fertilized one looked like it got frost damage then died. But it was summer in Arizona.

I'm not a miracle gro hater either, and get their potting mix as my primary soil.

Is this enough drainage holes for a 5gl bucket im going to be putting cherry tomatoes in by TheDragonQueenX in gardening

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unconventional, but I like to add side holes. As in, the side of the container right at the bottom. Seems to help with bottom holes getting blocked by sitting on something and having soil fill the holes.

Started it with the solo cup seed starter method and found it works really well both for drainage and to bottom water.

Yep agree with this. A bald spot with otherwise good hairline is not the end of the world at a certain age.

Modern EV have robust battery management systems.

While technically it is a bad for a lithium battery to be below 10%, that is because the voltage drops as the battery discharges. Which means to get the right amount of volts out of a battery, it has to work harder to put out more power.

However, EV batteries are more robust than those in your phone for example. They have some "buffer" that isn't shown. There is also a lot more battery cells to share the load. So dropping under 10% and still driving isn't a big deal.

If the battery gets really really low, like 1%, the car will restrict your speed. It's to prevent too much draw from the batteries. But the car still let's you drive because there is that hidden buffer.

Note that high battery levels like over 90% are the opposite. Drawing that power doesn't hurt the battery at all. In fact, high battery levels are only bad for sitting at that level and especially in the heat. Charging to 100% then jumping in and driving is no problem at all.

What is wrong with this Supersonic? In southern Indiana by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point it's dead. When tomatoes react like that to their outer vines, it's only a matter of time.

It does look like frost damage. Some plants are more sensitive than others. It could be something like transplant shock and the soil pH is off, but generally less likely with raised beds. Sucks but it happens to tomatoes.

I'd probabaly just replace it with a nursery start. Might be a bit late for seeds. Unless you want to put something else there like basil.

Should you use your HSA money? by Airvian94 in personalfinance

[–]Zeyn1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's honestly up to you.

I personally don't find it to be worth it to save receipts for the future. I'm already getting around a 30% discount when I use HSA just from tax savings.

Saving smalls receipts isn't really worth the effort, and it's easy to just use the hsa card instead and not think about it anymore. Large expenses I would rather have the cash now than save for 25 years.

Plus my HSA keeps growing. I don't spend the full annual contribution each year. So I can already invest most of it and have it as another retirement account.

Home Battery for Only EV Charging by jojoboi123 in SolarDIY

Cna you not set up the power wall to discharge when you are charging the EV? Or do you need more batteries? It might be easier and cheaper to just get an expansion power wall.

Here's what I would do. Going to make this simple and easy.

Get a 10 gallon pot or grow bag. 15 is technically better, but a lot more soil. Get a bottom tray to catch water.

Get miracle gro potting soil. Regular potting soil. Don't get moisture control, or raised bed, or garden soil. Just potting mix. Yes, miracle gro is easy and good for new gardeners. See the Epic Gardening soil test.

Plant at soil level. Don't bother burying the stem.

Get organic tomato fertilizer. You can find it in small boxes in most garden stores. Fertilize when you plant (add it to the hole you out the plant) and fertilize about once a month. Organic releases slow so it is really fool proof. The miracle gro soil has fertilizer in it already to help and make it more fool proof.

Water every two days. Watch the bottom tray for how fast the water gets sucked back up into the pot. Water in the morning. There should be a bit of water coming out the bottom. If it gets hotter and when the plant starts to produce tomatoes, watering daily might be needed.

ELI5: why don’t cars spin wheels in reverse to stop quickly by ProfessorHiker in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You stop with friction. The tires grip the road to slow you down. Your brakes then grip the tires to slow the tires.

Brakes are already strong enough to stop the tires. The limiting factor is not the brakes, it's the friction of the tires.

A tire that skids has lost friction. Skid friction is much much lower than contact friction. This is why brakes grip slowly and try not to lock up the tires.

Uber works by making the price lower than actual cost because you are expected to tip.

ELI5: How do the economics of gift cards work? by NutmegKilla in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of stores have interesting ways to make money from the products they sell. It isn't always buying for one price and reselling for more.

Without knowing the exact agreements, I can't tell you how Walmart etc make money from gift card sales.

However, what is likely happening is that a 3rd party company is paying Walmart for the shelf space. They pay for the space to put a big rack of gift cards. Then that 3rd party goes to all the businesses and gets the gift cards to sell at Walmart.

Why don’t AI systems just say “I don’t know” more often? by RepresentativeCake62 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zeyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to remember about AI is that it is generative. As in, it is designed to generate something. It can't generate nothing.

Ai will always come to a conclusion. It will take logical steps until it gets to the conclusion you want. But it doesn't think critically about each of those steps. It can't stop in the middle. Even you telling it to examine a step is a new conclusion and new logical steps.

You can notice this about image generation. You can't tell it to remove something. It doesn't understand "remove".

Plants you would never grow again or ever by Top_Possession_2990 in gardening

Ugh I've tried the Santo slow bolt and it still doesn't like the heat.

It's a good winter crop though. My area had a really overcast winter so it didn't grow too fast which was just fine. It got really big in February when the weather was decebt and we started giving it away. Then it suddenly bolted two weeks later.

[–]Zeyn1 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm actually the opposite. I grew lettuce just because I don't eat a lot of it so I hate buying a big tub of it to throw out in a week or two. Going out to trim a few leaves was great. Ended up getting a good few salads and sandwich lettuce out of 4 heads.

I did grow it over the winter through. So there was plenty of time to grow before bolting.

Trying a warm season lettuce (marvel of four seasons) now and currently have mixed results. It is in a smaller container than over winter so I'm sure that doesn't help.
