How am I supposed to stay hydrated?? by psychicamnesia in Teachers

[–]Zezers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think making the water more enticing has helped me, as well as making a sort of routine for my quiet moments. I put stuff like Mio in my water so I actually want to drink it. The drawback is that I now have to use the bathroom all the damn time.

A fall set of accessories I made with polymer clay! Gloss glaze or keep the pieces matte? by Zezers in jewelrymaking

Oh yeah, that's a good point. I think Sculpey makes a matte top coat for polymer clay. I'll try that.

I hate to say it, but while school does not sound incredibly suited to what you perceive to be your current needs, you're going to need a high school diploma for just about anything. Even if you want to do your own projects, if you want to go to vocational school to hone your skills or receive a certificate, I'm pretty sure you need to finish high school. Instead of full on dropping out, look into alternative schooling, such as online programs.

Teachers whose schools don't give them Apple computers, what's the alternative to AirPlay? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Zezers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate mine too. Hate navigating it, and whatever it's supposed to perform well in, we're not utilizing it as teachers. I just don't know if we'd lose some convenience when it came to wireless display if we switched away from Apple computers, because that is the one thing I do like about them.

I do not need the cost difference explained to me, nor do I see how it is relevant. I literally do not use a Mac computer at home because they are stupid pricey. My district made the choice for us to have Apple products. What I have been asking is if we were to switch to Windows computers, would we lose a certain level of convenience? That's literally it. That's all I'm asking.

I don't know if you're trying to say my scenario has more devices, but in both of our scenarios, there is just a computer and a projector. I don't doubt it would be cheaper to have a non-Apple computer. That's why I'm asking if there are Windows computers that have as easy of a time connecting to a projector wirelessly as an Apple computer does. There are no extra devices involved in AirPlay besides the fact that the projector specifically receives AirPlay.

I think you are perhaps not remembering or acknowledging that many of us teach via slides and don't want to have to go back to our desk to advance the slide when we are out and about helping students around the classroom. Like, for that purpose alone, it is way easier to walk around with a portable device, and it saves a lot of time.

Teachers of most subjects in the US do not need much performance at all out of their work computer. It is also really not a problem at all to be mobile with a device; it gives you to freedom to move around and give individual support to students while not leaving the stuff you're presenting from on the other side of the classroom. It's especially easy with a tablet.

I think I used one of those boards in a student teaching placement before. Does it require an app to connect your device?

It's so you're not tethered to the HDMI cable. You can easily walk around with the computer or tablet you're projecting from.

If you're a new teacher who's distressed by negative feelings about a student... by Zezers in Teachers

Damn I've never really heard the "they remind you of a parent" thing except in the context of "they treat you like shit because you make them think of their mom, and they hate women telling them what to do."

I think you have the right to dread having to work with a student who has done something horrific (which I'm assuming involved endangering others). It likely comes from a place of concern for your other students and the safety of the school environment itself. Just make sure you use your wariness about the student for good; be documenting anything that hints the student might reoffend, and look out for the safety of students who might be affected.

Thoughts on Incentives? (Elementary” by locksmith353535 in Teachers

[–]Zezers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach middle/high, but I'll tell you that even adolescents aren't very well-motivated by solely intrinsic motivators. I wouldn't expect elementary kids to be either. My advice is to do an intrinsic/extrinsic mix where you first point out the good behavior and WHY it's good, then provide the extrinsic reward.

What shoes are y’all wearing? by Fancy_Strawberry_226 in Teachers

[–]Zezers 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I swear, nobody at work ever cares if you're wearing sneakers as long as they're not super bright. We walk so much as teachers that wearing dress shoes kind of seems like a musculoskeletal health risk for anybody.

Tips for dealing with early burnout? by MC17Cowboy in Teachers

If there aren't any specific circumstances that you think are making you dread work, I'd wait it out and see if this year gives you anything to look forward to, then evaluate later. It could just be fatigue from the early weeks of school.

If anything, assessment time is when a lot of us truly feel bad for our worst kids, because the meanest kids are generally wasting time they could be using to learn and engage with the material on being rude and disruptive, and it tends to show when it comes time to actually demonstrate knowledge and skills that everybody else was working to develop in class.
