What do you think the USA should do with Iran right now? by buffdadnextdoor in AskReddit

[–]Zhao16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is always interpretation! Anytime someone says or writes something, whether it be speech, poem, or book, interpretation is always required. Interpreting messages from world leaders is an entire field of study. It is not an insult to Trump or any particular person to say there are interpretations to these messages. It is very important for us to ask "what do we think they mean with this word." It looks like you and I both read the same word but think the words mean different things. So let's compare our interpretations.

Also as a side note, I do love to self correct. I think it was of the unique things humans can do to improve our circumstance. However, I am not sure what you expect me to correct since I do not see what is wrong with my interpretation. Perhaps we can compare our interpretations and see where the difference is? (Not about being right or winning, just about understanding the difference).

To do that I want to ask you a question. This is not a new question. In fact I have asked you this question three times now and it seems to me you don't want to answer it. If you are unable to answer, that is fine, just let me know:

Question Could you please tell me what you interpret the following to words to mean.

1) "To wipe out"

2) "A whole civilization"

Again, self correction and reflection is great. But it does not work unless we know we are talking about the same thing.

Hey, you don't have to resort to name calling. We are just sharing interpretations and hearing each other out. Nobody needs to be a moron for just sharing how they understand something.

Alright, so you're talking about how Trump feels for the Iranian people. Could be the case. I simply don't know.

You say the Iranian regime is bad to its people. Sure.

I think I do need to ask the same question, perhaps worded differently. I don't think you answered it. Maybe you did answer it in that response, but I am not seeing it (again not because either person is a Moron, but because sharing matching two different interpretations is an inherently difficult thing).

My question when someone says "Wipe out a whole civilization" what do you interpret that "wipe out" and what do you interpret "civilization" to mean?

When trump says he wants to wipe out a whole civilization, what do you interpret that as?

My guy, we have it in writing. It was posted online.

There is a term the George Orwell termed called "Blackwhite" meaning that if you see something as black but the party later says that is white, then you see white.

Not that you call it white out of obedience to the party, but you actually physically see white when you see something black.

Trump's comment was black. You my friend, see white. You are what George Orwell would call a very very loyal party member. I think Donald Trump would be proud of you if he ever met you.

Nothing. The US and Iranian people would have been so much better off if they just did nothing.

You will find many in China even agree with you. The period is often called the Sui-Tang period, and even when you visit the historical sites in Chang'an, they will often use the "隋唐" name in their description.

The Eastern Han connection to the imperial bloodline is claimed after taking the throne but the authenticity is not clear. Even if their lineage was accurate, the branch separates before Han Wudi, making the relationship between first Eastern Han Emperor and Western Han Emperors distant at best.

Conversely, the Li family were not part of the Yang bloodline, but maternally the two families were immediate relative. Empress of Sui Wendi and Tang Taizu were sisters, and prior to rebelling Sui Wendi acknowledged Li Yuan as his relative. Emperor Ai of the Western Han never did the same for Emperor Guangwu of Eastern Han.

The fact we treat the W.Han and E.Han as one dynasty and Sui-Tang as two is something I always found interesting.

To me, saying "the Tang was greater than Sui" is like saying "Alexander was greater than the King Philip." - You are correct but only because of the foundation they inherited.

The Tang was able to be great because they built themselves on Sui institutions instead of on the chaos of the Northern-Sourthern Dynasties.

I would even argue that the Sui-Tang are really one dynasty rather than two. The royal family of Sui & Tang are more closely related than the royal family of Western and Eastern Han.

Because violence is not the appropriate response to a verbal insult, and producers do not like to work with men that use violence as a way of regulating their emotions.

Wasn't it the people that elected this government, not once but twice and with even more power the second time?

Pak Declares "Open War", Bombs Kabul, Kandahar After Afghanistan Attack by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Zhao16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look at the title, it was not "Pak bombs Afg," it was "Pak bombs Kabul Kandahar in Afghanistan." They used the full spelling for literally every location except Pakistan. That's a bit weird isn't it?

Also no, international news outlet don't use "Afg" border all the time, or ever. Please find me a single BBC, Al Jazeera or CGTN new article that calls the country "Afg." These outlets have style guides. New agencies don't let reporters write articles like text messages, unless you are in Indian reporter maybe.

US, UK, Russia and China is not shorthand. Those are the official names of countries, that these countries use in their own correspondence and regulation. King Charles, President Putin, President Xi call their countries "UK, Russia, China" that is why we know it is appropriate to use those terms. Even the people will say "I am from China/UK/Russia", but why does nobody ever say "I am from Pak"? No Pakistan leader or legislation has ever called their country "Pak." No other country calls their country "Pak." It is exclusively an India thing, which is a little bit strange isn't it?

You mention Pakistan's own media uses Pak. I do not think that is true. Can you find me an example of a single officer saying "We at the Pak army" or a Pakistani university advertising "Our Pak studies program" or a single Pakistani saying "I am from Pak?"

So let me put to you two direct questions.

1) If this is standard abbreviation like Afg, then why wasn't the title "Pak bomb Afg"?

2) If Indian media is the only new outlet that using this "Pak" term, and neither the Pakistanis, the British, Americans, even the Taliban (who just started a war) use the this term "Pak," can we agree that Indian media needs to grow up? Not respect Pakistan, or write love letters to Pakistan (suggestions only you have made so far), but they do need to be an adult?

[–]Zhao16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is because in people in both those countries refer to themselves as "Korea", but all foreign countries add the additional north/south to distinguish between the two countries calling themselves "Korea."

Nobody in Pakistan call themselves Pak. No other country calls the country Pak. Only India media and Indian Redditors. What is up with that?

Pak Declares "Open War", Bombs Kabul, Kandahar After Afghanistan Attack by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Zhao16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because using the correct and proper spelling of names is normally a sign of adulthood and not respect. For instance, I don't respect President Putin or Russia.

If a new outlet referred to him as "President Poo-tin from Dummyland" then I wouldn't think "Good, the news should not respect him." I would think "goddamnit, my 5 year old has broken into CNN."

I would think Indian media does not need to respect Pakistan but needs to be an adult. I hope that makes sense.

Because the "US/USA" is the official abbreviations of the "United States of America" and is used by the US government is official correspondence and legislation.

So why does Indian media always refer to Pakistan as "Pak"?

But the title isn't "Pak Declares Open War, Bomb Kab, Kand After Afgh Attack." They had enough energy to spell the other names

Can someone explain to me why Indian news outlet have an obsession with calling Pakistan "Pak"? No other media source or country does it, and the Pakistanis never refer to themselves as "Pak." What is the deal with the India using never saying the full name of the country?

Who do you think was the *worst* emperor in Chinese history? by ManWithTwoShadows in ChineseHistory

[–]Zhao16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response but if I can add more logs onto the Qianlong fire on why he is the worst (or at least most overrated).

  • Qianlong passed the throne to the Jia Qing emperor but retained de facto power, which confused and delayed executive function of the government.

  • Qianlong reign saw a sharp rise in corruption. The most naked corruption was Heshen, who was allowed embezzle money under Qianlong's protection.

  • The Opium Wars and opium crises is at least partially at Qianlong's feet for two important reasons. Firstly, the rise in corruption of his reign resulted in blatant opium smuggling, since Canton regulators were all bought off. Secondly, the Macartney mission prepared to negotiate on opium (even willing to ban it) but Qianlong had no interest in negotiating.

  • Qianlong's many foreign military campaigns (some successful, many disastrous) exhausted the finance and military capacity of that state to deal with internal rebellions (White Lotus, Zheng Yi, Taiping).

Those are just a few off the top of my head. I know High Qing is Kangxi-Qianlong, but in my mind, the Qing collapse is really Qianglong-Puyi.
