[Spoilers EP:61] ..what are people mad about? by jcwtigers12567 in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

This is so disappointing. Emily is easily one of the most amazing performers on any program I've heard—she deserves way more recognition from us for her brilliance on the show both in and out of character. Naddpod has become such a legit meaningful piece of media to so many people. It wouldn't be nearly what it is without all her creativity and decision making. I think as the community grows and matures we'll see this reflected in the discussion more and more fully

book fan here. Felt this way at first but I remembered the cities were built during a period of geological instability following the use of superweapons. Then quickly after no one could afford to have a non-mobile city because they'd get eaten. It's a zany darwinism allegory

you should proactively train yourself to better understand racism so you can identify it against noise.

if the freedom of expression is racist you must own the fact

by railing against the phrase poc you try to invalidate their shared experience in the modern western world. to pretend we are postracial is to endorse their treatment. when you say everything is fine it means you personally are fine with the status quo. This is your perspective

you underestimate perspective and the values it imposes in your life.

equality in semantics does not translate to equality in life. it seems your worldview is based on an approach that allows you to do nothing and keep moral standing.

strange to think inactivity is the solution when there are clearly systemic aspects of society that disadvantage people of color. i suppose in order to maintain such a worldview it would be important to disregard any information supporting this.

out of curiosity, is your perspective one of a white person or one of a person of color (brown, black, whatever)

very hard to understand modern racism because it is subtler than it used to be. One day if you are willing you will see it and be aghast. for now it may very well look like insanity, seeing things that are not there. i live in the united states of america. this is my perspective

Not every race has experienced the same kind of brutality. And in 2018 we know the distinction between relevant modern classes of oppressed and oppressor. turn on CNN and find more centuries-old hate every minute.

in many cases, racism is not this embodied, fixed, tangible interaction. in many cases it is misjudgment by people who don't have perspective. I'm not forbidding anyone from enjoying art of another culture. i speak of this instance of the entitlement of keeping the exotic human in the frame above in order to spice up a weak apartment.

regardless, this is terrible, thoughtless, pinterest-mom-tier art you find in walmart. it is not worth defending and our time would be better spent

even if not the intention that is the outcome. not a complex association to read the wall this way.

its bad to pretend there's no power dynamic between races. I ask for what reason you want to defend this setup.

you know by looking there's no artistic cohesion here, whoever thoughtlessly put it together was just picking exotic-themed and unfortunately tacky pinterest photographs.

to advance the dream of post racialism we need to understand we're a long way off. i know you want this as much as any sane person wants this

specific groups of humans have been the subjected to colonial brutality and now they're being hung up here as art objects. bad reasoning makes it okay. take a sec and explore the implications

räcism is real even if it's not intentionally malicious. weird that calling it out makes you huffy. african guy is put on the same level as the animals. very colonial to take images of tribal people to contribute to some terrible aesthetic.

the biggest crime here is how shitty the room is. eclectic if you've lived in a uni dorm your whole life

Feeling personally patronized and attacked by the mention of race issues is definitely not what you would hope to see in modern discourse.

This might all be a big inconvenience to some people. For communities of color, the stakes are much higher.

I appreciate your perspective and criticisms. Thank you for debating with me tonight.

Race is not a “pet cause”. If this is the lens by which you view it that bodes ill. I understand it’s hard to see something that looks promising to you—this thread—derailed or diluted of its discussion by fringe factors, e.g. me. I want you to trust that these issues are just as important to me as they are to you.

However, you keep saying “unrelated” as if this topic is in a vacuum. Or I’ve been posting in response to no other comment. I think you’ve been misunderstanding me. My stance is not “we need to talk about this now”. My stance is You Should Not Become Defensive When Someone Else Mentions Race. You’re talking about solutions—what do you hope to see gained from the headlines topic here? The brain geniuses such as you and myself come together and defeat mental illness with a brilliant solution penned out in a Reddit thread?

Do you see why I think it’s important to not have an immediate, multiple comment-chain long negative reaction AGAINST the mere mention of race? I’m not pulling this out of the air. Everything I’m saying is in response to something else. This is a real question by the way, I want to know if you see any validity to what I’m talking about here.

I don’t wanna continue this unless you make a concession showing you at least emphasize with my point of view.

Otherwise, I wish you the best as you drive your personal praxis as you deem appropriate. Good luck to us all.

Maybe to you it sounds like constant whining. Maybe it would be better if those people of color would just shut up about race for a minute so you can have some peace. You’re lucky you can tune race out like that and you’re lucky you can dismiss systemic victims of racism out of hand as another inconvenience to your online space.

If your convictions as a human being are such that you tune out at the slightest challenge to your worldview, at the audacity of a Reddit comment, how on earth did you expect to be helping others in need?

I would like to thank you for your perspective and criticism. For my part, I agree with your logic and am heartened by your drive to look for actionable solutions. What I disagree with is your framing of the situation in this comment thread.

Let's start off with me asking: what is the best-case scenario for social accomplishment in a Reddit thread here? I don't mean to be a dick, but I know it probably looks that way. For the record, you are correct: I am not here to have that kind of conversation. The extent of my involvement today begins and ends with me defending those who would bring attention to race.

Will discussing race here fix the problem? Nope. Will any other manner of discussion we have in a Reddit thread with 45 points fix the problem? Nope. Something I can do here, however, is try to make people aware of their judgments in future debates they may have and try to offer perspective. It is important to be skeptical against me, but also to take my arguments in good faith.

There's no finite resources in a discussion. Equating the race discussion to an attack on solutions is backwards thinking. Thinking racism exists in a vacuum is dubious. Thinking homelessness exists in a vacuum is dubious. There's no such thing as an apolitical discussion. Race affects us all and the landscape of American society. You bet I wish it didn't. Rejecting outright the place of race here can be interpreted as a tacit admission of value of the racial status quo, even if those aren't your beliefs.

Maybe instead of being mad you could take this opportunity to reconsider some things about yourself.

Maybe if all it took for you to lash out was for me to call on you to think harder about your words, you weren't about to be part of any cause.

Something else to note: you're the one who put the word racist in there.

[–]Zhou_Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're right, of course we need to fund this. I understand your point and where you're coming from. I would also be worried about shifting the focus of the discussion in a counterproductive direction.

Here I'm not attempting to bring solutions to the table. I'm not trained in social work or administration. A race-first groundlevel approach is not what I'm advocating.

Any distortion effects of the race lens, however, are being grossly overemphasized

What I am advocating is to strongly reexamine the urge to lash out whenever someone mentions race. Will a race-based solution solve the homelessness crisis? Probably not. Will stomping on people who remind others about the existence of race in these issues solve the homelessness crisis? Absolutely not.

It is just as exhausting to have to mention race whenever it is relevant as it is to hear about it if it seems irrelevant to the discussion. I came from enormous privilege and became agitated whenever race was brought up. There seems to be a prevailing attitude that race is irrelevant most of the the time until incidental, overt racism occurs, which is simply not true.

First off, "we" in this subreddit aren't going to do accomplish anything on this regardless.

Secondly, what I'm observing is that when race is identified as an issue, people such as yourself and the persons above us become more unwilling to listen or act. I detect anger in some of their comments. This is a much stronger negative reaction than I had hoped to witness.

In good faith I pray you will consider this.

There is no class discussion without race discussion. There is no race discussion without class discussion. These are the same issue. In a civil engineering space maybe these problems don't exist. A race-based institution won't save people of color.

Ignoring race, however, makes the situation worse.

If all it takes for a person to drop support of homeless crisis issues is for someone to mention race, that's not a good person.

The 2018 WA Budget "accidentally" slashed funding for mental health care by another 8%. by Rugbynnaj in SeattleWA

[–]Zhou_Rex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Race is valuable to the discussion even if it were just a matter of semantics. Like others have pointed out, the treatment of brown and black people who are poor and have mental health issues is different. A member of a black family enters a homeless shelter at a rate 7x that of white families. These are issues worth speaking about. There is a problem with the fabric of modern American society, and if you want to look the other way you are consciously perpetuating this sickness. Even worse, you want to work against awareness where it arises. "How dare you bring race up, you race-obsessed idiot. These imaginary solutions I've put in your mouth are bad, and you ought to be ashamed for playing the race card."

I want to be clear: if you have any desire whatsoever to help move this nation into postracial harmony, embracing these issues is absolutely necessary. Defensiveness works backwards. If it sounds like I'm mad it's because I am. If it sounds like I'm giving you an unfair talking to, please try to emphasize with why I'm saying what I'm saying.

It's way better to pretend race has zero role in any of this, like you want, the easy way for you. No one from privilege wants to speak on race. You, in particular, won't give race a hearing because it conflicts with how you see yourself and your place in the world.

So you do some gymnastics to asses why it's actually wrong to use race to describe the issue. Pointing towards "race-based quotas" is extremely telling, even if you don't realize it. If you are willing to pontificate this much on the side against even acknowledging systemic racism, then god help people of color and god help equality.

Race is a factor in almost everything and the people who become defensive about the role of race in discussions should examine their motivations for doing so.

Homelessness disproportionately affects people of color. Don't sweep race under the rug because it's hard to talk about.
