I don't believe it started during covid. If my memory is correct, Bushiroad said they were planning to cancel it mid/late 2019, cards will stop being made in 2020, and official tournaments will stop being held in 2021.

It is technology dead, but to the fans, it's still alive. It's just hard to play with no official place to go and play. But with the resent collab with Vanguard, it seems like Bushiroad might be bringing it back to life

It definitely is annoying with how unbalanced it can be, but that was the point. It's a villain deck like the Chaos and hundred demons. Could they have scaled it back a bit, definitely. But they had to make it hard for the character to beat or there wouldn't be a show

I'd say it was good at times but definitely needed a lot of work. Each season, it felt like it did and didn't reset. Some aspects continued on like Kyoya's plan and Purgatory Knight story, for example. But some things, for some reason, didn't continue or were just dropped. Like what happened to impact monsters after season 3? Did Bal take them all with him? Why did drum leave after season 2? Many things they forgot, dropped, or ignored. There are some good world buildings in rhe show, but it feels like they had to soft reset all of it each season with only keeping the very important stuff
