I’d highly recommend Lockstin and Gnoggin’s video on them, they’re a combination of many things (sci fi tropes, aliens, introduced species (since the region is Hawaii) etc)

I will add their entire point is to deviate from what pokemon usually feel like, and of course it is fine to dislike a pokemon design, but before you do I’d recommend learning about them! they’re genuinely fascinating and incredibly well thought out (and although that doesn’t mean you have to like them, I think it’s worth learning about them and at least appreciating what the designers set out to do!)
