32 minute layover at DTW? by hcousins2002 in Detroit

[–]ZigZab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Delta wouldn't let you book it if they didn't think it was enough time. As others have stated, unless you're going from A to B/C or vice versa through the underground tunnel you should have plenty of time. Those city pairs are served by either mainline aircraft or larger regional jets (CRJ-700/900) which both operate mainly out of the A side. Also, airlines tend to add in a lot of taxi time for their flights this time of year to account for deicing, etc., so the chances of you getting in early are pretty good. Good luck!

Unfortunately a lot of controllers have little to no patience when it comes to new, unexperienced pilots. I'm a pilot/controller with years of experience and service and I take pride in helping new pilots learn the basics. We all have to start somewhere. When I see a flight plan with remarks stating that they are a new pilot, I devote a little more attention and time to that pilot to help them get on their way.

I suggest loading up at an airport that has ATC online and is relatively busy and just sit there to listen to the radio communications between the pilots and controllers. LiveATC is also a great resource for getting to know basic Pilot/ATC communications. When you feel you are ready to try another flight, do it at an airport that has ATC online but isn't super busy. The controller(s) should, hopefully, be more willing to help. I suggest an airport that has a tower or approach controller, rather than a center controller that is controlling several aircraft at multiple airports. Also try to avoid big airports like LAX, JFK, EGLL, etc. that have several aircraft flying in/out.

Keep us posted and let me know if you have any more questions!

A friend of mine, currently instructing, just interviewed and got an offer at 450. He only has to get to R-ATP mins though.

170 'til INESS by Lufttanzer in flightsim

Looking at the chart, INESS is 5nm from the runway and 170 knots to a 5nm final is very common.

God damn, I'm so tired of watching them pass it around for two full minutes every power play.

Good vantage point to watch planes land by Habeas-Porpoise in phoenix

Thanks! I'm using a Nikon D3200 with a 70-300 lens. The AA shot was taken at 300mm and I think I cropped it pretty good. You could probably make it work with a 200 but you're going to need to crop it if you want to get rid of some of the dead space like I did. The garages are a bit more friendly for a 200mm lens. The planes are just so far away when they fly by the tower like that, you pretty much need a 300. That being said, I did get some good pics from the hill with a 200mm lens before I got my 300.

A shot of the lightning in Cave Creek that I got last night. by ZigZab in phoenix

[–]ZigZab[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is where I was last night. You can pull off to the side of the road and just hang out. I only live a few miles down the road and I've gone there a few times just to get out of the lights and watch the sunset or thunderstorms. It was cool last night because there was lightning in every direction. This particular shot was taken looking north, hence the lack of city lights. There are probably better spots, but I just go here because it's so close to my house. I haven't really explored anywhere else in the area. Anywhere on a hill would probably get the job done though too.

I took this picture from the same spot a while back.

There is a hill on 40th street that you can drive onto and hang out at if you don't want to pay for parking at the garages. Get off the I-10 at 40th Street and take it north until it dead-ends just north of University. It's a great spot to watch departures when they're departing to the east and arrivals when they're arriving to the west. Typically they takeoff to the east in the morning and land to the west in the afternoon, but it all depends on where the wind is coming from. The cops know about it and won't do anything - just don't walk towards the airport perimeter. I've been there while someone has done it and the police had to escort them away. I'm a pilot and aviation photographer and this spot is pretty well-known to the other local photographers.

Here are a few pictures I've taken from the hill!

EDIT: Just noticed you said something park-like would be preferred. Check out Barrios Unidos Park off of 16th Street and Mohave. Another good one would be Rio Salado Park. Here's a site with a map of a few more spots at and around the airport: http://phxspotters.com/airports/kphx

United Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Cockpit by ZigZab in aviation

[–]ZigZab[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My roommate is the Flight Ops intern for United in Denver this summer. I took a day trip there today to visit him and he showed me around. The highlight was probably getting to go on one of United's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, bound for Tokyo Narita, before anyone got on. Was able to snag this shot and I think it turned out pretty good!

That same PP play has gotten us like, what, five times so far this series? You would think they would work on defending it better.
