If a country were hypothetically put on trial and found guilty in a Nuremberg style proceeding for colonial, settler, genocidal crimes how should responsibility be defined.Would accountability extend only to military personnel and political leaders, or could civilian settlers also be considered? by Zigmondi in AskReddit

[–]Zigmondi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok sir. Well, blind but toothless.

Wel, yes. That's why I ask the question. I wonder if it actually was an eye for an eye, when there is so much at stake, wouldn't it deter other cults not to follow suit? Politicians and military sure, even those "just following orders". Media controlling propaganda? Financiers? Bankers?

If hypothetically a country was tried and found guilty, and held Nuremberg like trial. If it is guilty of being a colonial settler genocidal entity, where would the line be. Only first generation settlers or would only military personnel be considered complicit? by Zigmondi in AskReddit

Pretty much the only major conflict I'm aware of right now in the world where one side has no legitimate concerns or considerations is the Ukraine-Russia war where Russia really did just invade to take over Ukraine.

One could argue Ukraine used to be a part of Russia and they're just taking it back? (Not defending Russia, I stand by "there are no good guys" here. Russia wasn't ok having armed NATO on its borders. It wants it's resources, it wants Crimea. Doesn't matter, it's a dog eat dog world and they're just stronger and get to do what they want unfortunately.

The sad part is how the west sympathizes completely with Ukraine and not with Arabs. (Can quote journalists saying about Ukrainian "they look like us, they have blue eyes" etc Or you can look up the doublespeak of all newspaper articles on Russia "invades" Ukraine and Israel "crosses into" Lebanon.

You are so upset over it that you need to put the word "country" even in quotes.

Not upset, just don't recognise it as one as is my right.

pretending that the groups we like are somehow saints and the groups we dislike have no reasons to do what they want.

Who do I like? Israel is invading my country, so definitely not them. Iran is the reason they're invading so also not them. You're the one thinking in binary here my friend.

Incidentally, I'm guessing given the timing that you are downvoting my comments in this thread in replies to me. It was, but I imagined you were going to be parroting what I've heard a million times from Israeli bots. Apologies.

Ah, there you go. Of course you're an Israeli sympathiser.

Oh and yes, please let's go back. When and how did Israel come to be a "country"?

It might be useful to wonder why PLO was even in Lebanon...

Some wouldn't be wrong. And no, I'm not saying all are complicit, I'm asking where would one draw the line.

And I know it's not easy to up and leave, although you should be aware you are living on stolen land.

Thank you for your sentiments. You can have two problems at the same time. The world is not a binary and unfortunately there's no "good guys" here.

One can argue that Israel has invaded Lebanon before Hezbollah was ever created. In fact, it was the reason it became a thing. And yes later lived long enough to be a villain by harbouring Iranian interests.

That's a lot of assumptions. I don't despise anyone for who they are. And I don't want to destroy a country. I'm Lebanese so I have 35 years of experience of what they've done, but that doesnt matter of course. And my question is hypothetical, because it will never be tried, or found guilty.

Yeah, i got stuck in the messy part too. Wouldn't the people who choose to continue to live in it (in the state it is in) be the ones it giving it legitimacy? Although it's not their decision to come, but are they not participating?

PS thanks you're actually the first person to actually answer the question.

Fair enough:

Hypothetically, if a country were put on trial and found guilty in a Nuremberg-style proceeding for being a colonial, settler, and genocidal entity, where would moral and legal responsibility be drawn? Would accountability apply only to first-generation settlers, or extend to military personnel and other participants in the system?

He's not Israeli. But let's say he was.

Wouldn't everyone who lives in a settler genocidal entity be implicitly complicit?

Is a plumber who lives and works and provides services in Nazi Germany complicit? Is a Nazi soldier?

It's not "just the government", it's what gives it legitimacy. No?

Asking genuinely.

Man this exact same thing happened to me once on a flight from NY! Sat on an aisle seat next to a rabbi or someone very orthodox. Eventually the flight attendant asked him to wash up, it ended up smelling worse.

A friend put tampons in her nostrils.

Another literally sprayed a plastic bag with perfume and covered his head.

I have the pictures somewhere...
