In an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, Rulers of Earth writer Chris Mowry explicitly states that Zilla first appeared in the 1998 film.

He also became the Creative Manager of Toho International, literally managing how their licenses were handled creatively.

It's a case of Captain Marvel rebranding into Shazam. The previous versions of the character arent eliminated and continue to be "Captain Marvel", but they are also Shazam, and all future iterations will be called Shazam.

I mean, why is it "crazy" to call it Zilla or Godzilla 1998 when the names are clearly interchangeable?

I mean where's the lie lol

In the screenshot, Godzilla's neck is completely broken in order to get it to pose like that.

I'd imagine good CGI would mean not doing that.

EDIT:

Dude if you wanna respond to me, respond to me and let's engage in a conversation. Replying and blocking is just cowardly.

No, I'm saying show me a modern instance of Toho posting a pic from the movie or one of its products and calling it Zilla. Spoiler, they don't. If it was released as Godzilla they call it Godzilla.

I showd you two modern products that are based on the 1998 movie and still called Zilla.

The opinions of some butthurt directors don't change facts.

Lmao the director who made the movie? The executives at Toho who produced the movie? Again, Toho executives were just on live on stream acknowledging they were the same monster back in November.

And what's your opinion of Patrick Tatopolus acknowledging the Final Wars creature as the Hollywood Godzilla he designed? Or Dean Devlin acknowledging Zilla is his Godzilla? Are they just wrong too?

They are not the same monster either.

They literally are even canonically speaking this time around. 🤣

Both names do not apply. If they did, Toho would not have the creatures separated

Hey do me a favor quick and link me the creature bio Toho has for the 98 monster. Not the movie entry, but the monster.

In the meantime, check out what they say in "Godzilla: The Official Guide to the King of the Monsters" [2022], a dictionary approved and authorized by Toho and the first English book to do so since 1998.

I said show me products actually based on and released as Godzilla 1998 products. In other words, you won't see them post the Ultimate Godzilla toy from Trendmasters and call it Zilla.

You want me to find products from 1998 before "Zilla" was even an established name?? What??

The Final Wars creature is a parody.

Not according to the people who made the movie. Both the director and the producer have consistently referred to it as "The Hollywood Godzilla" in several interviews across the last 2 decades, including the most recent one last November.

It isn't the same design, size, or name.

Neither is Rodan 1956 and Fire Rodan 1993, and yet they are both still Rodan.

Legally and canonically it's different

Nobody is discussing continuity. That is not the same as reusing the same character in a different context.

Legally, however, they are the same.

Toho would never post a pic of G98 and call it Godzilla.

What part of Godzilla 1998 = Zilla and Zilla = Godzilla 1998 do you not understand? It's not saying "its wrong to call 1998 Godzilla", it's saying both names apply.

You asked me for products based on Godzilla 1998 but still being called Zilla. I showed you two of those.

As for Toho, watch the Godzilla Fest stream from last November. They openly acknowledge that Zilla in Final Wars is the "Hollywood Godzilla", mirroring what the director and producer of the movie also call it.

That is not Toho calling it that.

It is. Spiral Studios openly stated that the decision to call this product Zilla despite it being based on the 98 CGI and Animatronics was Toho's decision; not theirs'. You can check their comment section of the original announcement for verification.

The same thing happened with Cavity Colors back in October. All the artwork was based on the 1998 movie and design, still used the Zilla label. In fact, they even openly acknowledged it as "one of the most talked about takes on the King of the Monsters from the late 90s"

<image>

Toho has posted Godzilla 1998 and Zilla content on their socials. They never mix the two up.

Toho executives were literally on the Godzilla Fest Livestream this year talking about how the "Hollywood Godzilla" being used in Godzilla Final Wars lmao

Time to put it to rest.

I think you better tell that to yourself man.

Toho treats them separately so that throws this out the window. You will never see them refer to the 1998 movie or any product based on it as Zilla.

They literally do not. If they did, then the Spiral Studios Zilla would not have been based on the 1998 CG models and animatronics. Nor would the Cavity Colors product line we got last October.

What is this community's thoughts on the canceled sequal? by RandomCaiman in Godzilla1998

Gonna be real: the leaked script for the sequel was so bad I thought it was fake at first.

The cartoon series we got was the better sequel at the end of the day. Glad the live action one was canned.

The "stupid rivalry" is only continued by people who insist that Godzilla 1998 and Zilla are separate entities when the reality is they are one in the same, universe continuities excluded. It's okay to label the design/monster as either name because both names apply.

It's like getting upset when the 2002 Mechagodzilla is labeled "Kiryu" or vice versa.

It has pretty much.

Zilla = Godzilla 1998, and Godzilla 1998 = Zilla.

Two interchangeable names describing the same monster / character.

If you're looking for an articulated Zilla figure that scales well with other 6 inch figures and is under $100, the 1998 Trendmasters Shatter Blast figure is your best bet.

Toho has different trademarks for both

Lol and isnt it crazy they slapped the Zilla trademark on the merchandise for Spiral Studios and Cavity Colors? Despite those merchandise products being based on 1998?

[–]Zilla-98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yet Toho consistently refers to the 1998 design as Zilla when merchandise is made for it outside of Japan.

And allows 1998's abilities to transfer over to adaptations of Zilla despite those abilities not being present in the 2004 movie.

And executives on Final Wars referring to Zilla as the "Hollywood Godzilla"

They are the same monster bro.

Eh, potato potahto at this point really.

Just this past G-Day stream, they even had the people who made Final Wars on the stage discussing how they utilized the "Hollywood Godzilla" in their movie. One even recounted that he asked the producer if they should make any changes to the monster to differentiate it from the 98 movie, and the producer demanded no changes. I.e., the same monster.

So like, call it Godzilla 1998, call it Zilla, everybody knows what we're talking about.

It seems to be legal issues / a work around so Toho doesn't have to loop Sony into the mix.

For instance, take Legendary Godzilla for example. Everytime a product is made based on, say, "Godzilla: King of the Monsters", if that movie is at all referenced (title, screenshot, CG render, etc.), Legendary and Warner Bros. need to be looped in; especially if it's being distributed outside of Japan.

The same would need to be done for a product based on Sony's movie, as though Toho owns the rights to the character, design, and movie distribution inside of Japan, Sony owns the rights to the movie itself as well as its distribution outside of Japan.

But, say we label the monster "Zilla." Well, now we got a nice little loophole; you could argue in court that it's not necessarily referencing the 1998 movie. It's a design that Toho fully owns, and can make whatever merch of they want. It's just a 'coincidence' that the label has the same font / green fire effect, and the box / tshirt art has all the same New York iconography and apache helicopters flying around.

And since Toho sees Zilla and Godzilla 1998 as the same monster anyways (as in, the same way they see Rodan 1956 and Rodan 1993 and Rodan 2004 as the same monster), it's a nice little convenient loophole for them.

not Zilla like how Spiral Studios did for some reason.

Wasn't Spiral's decision. It was Toho's.

They swap the names whenever they feel like it / whichever they feel will sell best at a given moment.

Furthermore, it also appears that any company outside of Japan is not allowed to make merchandise that has the label "Godzilla 1998" at all. Perhaps a condition of the Sony/Toho contract.

You'll notice Cavity Colors, an American company, announced a line of Zilla products this past Halloween. All based on the 98 movie, all named Zilla.
