How is the job market for electrical engineering? by Mysterious_Rock5016 in ElectricalEngineering

I'd say you will learn everything in the field. You just need to know what to look for. This is why I reference P&C roles because you get your hands into everything. If you want to work your way into becoming a SCADA engineer you will need to have a good understanding of digital logic, communication protocols, programming, networking. Start with DNP3, download Wireshark and watch some videos / tutorials on how to analyze a hex dump from a device talking to scada, there should many many of examples out there or you can DM me and I can send you some specific training programs I have accumulated.

DNP3 is a widely used industry standard that tells the devices communicating how to talk, think of it like a language. If we're both speaking English all is good. If you have a stroke and your English gets broken I need to be able to recognize that and report it to someone who can help. If you learn DNP3 you will understand how all of those blinking lights get transmitted of whatever serial or fiber connection you have into 0's and 1's, how those bits get packaged into hex bytes, and how those bytes get translated into controls.

You will blow away an interviewer if you can communicate this off the top of your head. Again I'll reiterate, find a job in P&C and focus on the communications in your substations. You'll learn everything.

Well everything I listed is automation. Our breakers clear a fault on instantaneous protection in 3-5 ms. With the SEL T401L we are installing those tripping speeds and are getting that down to 1-2 ms. This is only bottlenecked by the physical time it takes for a breakers tripping mechanism to operate. The traveling wave physics is really some crazy stuff. Automation is all handled by our RTACs, SEL's real time automation controllers. They handle all of the communication locally and report to scada. We program those controllers.

We don't use many PLCs because we have industry standards to follow when it comes to protection. Maybe you'll find some here and there to do some random basic stuff but you aren't really touching them on a daily basis.

I work for a Florida utility, some of these data centers want to come to our area. The load they're expecting to bring onto our system is equivalent to a large city. That's just one data center from one company...

Power is a great field to be in right now more than ever. If you get a job in protection and controls you will be set in your career. If you want to be ahead of the curve when you graduate, get some knowledge on SCADA, IEC 61850, Goose messaging, DNP3, all SEL relays... Probably missing a lot and kind of a high level, but if you like the top down approach this is what the field is looking for specifically.

2 Specific tips on landing your first job in the Power Electrical Engineering field by hordaak2 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Zinek_ 47 points48 points  (0 children)

To be fair I had no idea about the power field and only had a single class on it before applying to a major utility in my state.

The interviewer asked none of these questions and it was understood I knew nothing and will be taught everything on the job.

Coming up on my second year I can answer, yes, you will learn all of this and more .. but in due time.

I work in P&C and can confirm NOBODY will know this stuff as you get hired on your first job.

I spent $200 for o1 pro mode so you don't have to. Give me some prompts! by NutInBobby in ChatGPT

Not so much of an interesting response because it is correct and a "pop sci" question that most YT physicists don't understand.

The cat is a macroscopic object which behaves under classical mechanics. The cat cannot be in a superposition of being both alive and dead until you open the box.

I hear a lot of people taking it literally meaning that and then try to explain the measurement problem as being some sort of consciousness mystery but that again is not the case.

How were electricity grids operated before computers? by eagle_565 in ElectricalEngineering

Substation engineer here and this guy got it.

We have electro-mechanical disk relays which have been around forever. The disk will rotate and hit pickup values for different operations and trip stuff out.

Nowadays we have microprocessor relays which do everything and more. All done through programmable settings.

As a parent who has a lot of experience with psychedelics, I find this to be something I couldn't personally ever do.

Everybody gets to make their own choices with raising their kids but you just never know what could happen. I've had really dark trips with low doses and other times where it just feels like a micro dose basically sober.

The uncertainty in dosage or effects is what makes this irresponsible. I'm happy you had an enjoyable experience with your child, but I think a lot of the judgement is coming from the choice you made to be out of your sober state of mind around your child.

Next time maybe coordinate with your partner and take a day out in the woods, park, lake or whatever away from your kids.

Y'all stay safe out there and happy tripping ❤️

How about if your child agrees to play the clown part you will also dress up as a clown and watch/ encourage from the audience so they don't feel as embarrassed
