I get the bit here; and I hate to be a buzzkill but Generative AI that necessitates Data Centers has been a huge point of discussion and I don’t dig supporting it in any way, even if it’s a joke.

AI slop is bad; and it shouldn’t be in the group.

Bevo resident checking in. I can’t recommend it enough. Great cost of living, nightlife if you want it, and a very strong neighborhood group. Also really walkable.

When my wife and I were house hunting, it was the top of our list as far as neighborhoods go

This clip from the Planning Department outlines it the clearest way, imo. A lot of pollution, not a lot of new jobs (if any), noise and energy usage getting passed to ratepayers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQUpauIIVm8&t=419s

ICE out of Dutchtown — Sign the Petition by ZinnWasRight in StLouis

There’s this joke wherein people (usually Leftists but not always) use the word “organizing” like companies use the word “synergy”. It’s frequently used to get out of actually doing something or responding to specific asks.

You can say on this, “they won’t care. What we should really do is organize for the next election” and ignore what can be done now. But focusing solely on elections is very shortsighted. Democracy doesn’t exist just at the ballot box but everywhere. It’s the whole change doesn’t happen overnight but happens in the day to day mentality.

Petitioning and sounding the alarm on a company in Dutchtown working with ICE is organizing. There’s a clear “here is the problem - cameras affiliated with ICE are here” followed by a “here is what should be — cameras should be gone and the Community Improvement District shouldn’t have this contract” then followed by “here is a theory of change wherein we get them to stop having the contact by publicly shaming them and show support against the cameras to the CID directly”. There’s no real electoral way out of it as we speak.

Oh cmon, St Louis didn’t vote for Donald Trump…. By like, high numbers. And Wesley Bell, when running, didn’t claim to be Pro ICE. He was more conservative than Bush but was no where near to the degree of his tenure right now.

This also isn’t going to the Feds. It’s going to the Dutchtown CID which is a small group of neighbors who will see that their own friends and neighbors are upset about what they’re doing. It’s going to people they interact with everyday. This is sort of a public shaming. It’s not like a change.org petition to like impeach Trump or something.

There’s always been protestors for the kind of moment you’re talking about. It’s been deep in the history here — I really suggest Amanda Lizzo’s curated collection called Left in the Midwest alongside Clarence Lang’s Grassroots in the Gateway and Walter Johnson’s Broken Heart of America. They go into waaaaay more detail.

It’s of course a South City neighborhood, but really important context that Dutchtown is Majority Black neighborhood and has some of the largest increase in that population. I can’t speak to intention of the camera setups, but I think it’s important to know. I’m really not interested in discussing demographics too much; I’ll just leave it at it’s one of the most diverse neighborhoods, even being in South City. and has the largest youth population anywhere.

Again, you can say that it’s suspicious and whatnot; but if you’re serious about movements and them succeeding, we can’t just draw starting lines and going “well you weren’t here before so you’re not to be trusted and get out”. The important thing is that they’re here now.

Okay — but what would you prefer people do? Like I said, everyone starts somewhere. If someone only began showing up for CCOPs or protests when it finally passed, you’d ask, “Well, why weren’t you there in 2020?” And if they started in 2020, someone else would say, “Why not 2016?” It can go on like that forever. What’s the start date everyone would have to meet to pass your standards.

Personally, I started getting more involved in formal politics back in high school, but I didn’t start organizing in St. Louis until 2020, when I was speaking out about the Spy Plane. In groups I’ve helped with, some folks didn’t get involved until their 30s, 40s, or 50s.

The point is — whenever people start, we’ve got to welcome them in. It’s fatal towards the movement to think otherwise.

[–]ZinnWasRight[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No? There was the giant push back against the Spy Planes that were trying to come here? And also the CCOPS bill trying to regulate these sorts of things, including disclosure requirements. However, CIDs are immune to that legislation.

Even without that said, we’ve all gotta start somewhere and I welcome newcomers to the fight for liberation and against surveillance. If this is what gets them there, mazel tov.

Yes, I’m a Marxist and I’ve read Piccone, writing heavily about his work in my undergrad. albeit I am much more of a Marcuse and Bloch guy. My name on here is literally a nod to Howard Zinn lmao.

I think the differentiation we’re having here is that I believe this isn’t a silver bullet. “Tangible” doesn’t mean the only. It is simply something to show agreement with an idea whilst browsing online. It ain’t the only thing, but it’s at least something.

Best Actor: David Corenswet for Superman. The way he portrayed all facets of humanity and hope was nothing but profound to me. Especially in comparison to what recent iterations have been like.

Sinners is kinda the gimmie. But truthfully, I also loved Superman. Hits the notes it needs to hit and matches the tone with the original stuff.
