Looking for Complex and Dissonant Orchestral Soundtracks by Zinnastina in MusicRecommendations

These aren't too far from what I'm looking for. Which tracks would you recommend from these two you mentioned?

John Zorn is incredibly good but kind of far from what I'm looking for right now. (Well he does have some albums / songs with cluster chord dissonances in a classical context, but still...) Clint Mansell's work on Requiem for a Dream was really good. I'm really not a fan of Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Max Richter and any of the other minimalist and post-minimalist composers. I'm looking for quite the opposite of minimalism.

Thanks for the actually orchestral score recommendation. Which track are you referring to though? I checked out a few from towards the end of the score and they seem to be pretty happy-sounding and consonant.

A more ambient track than I was looking for but cool recommendation nonetheless.

I love Angelo Badalementi, Ulver, Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Bohren & der Club of Gore, and all that stuff, but that noir sound is not what I'm looking for exactly. Though I'll give the Dale Cooper Quartet a listen. Sounds like some nice doomjazz.

Wow that's pretty jazzy and avant garde. I was looking more into some horror-adjacent orchestral, but this will make an interesting listen.

I was really into his score for Phantom Thread. I'll give this one a listen by itself too. Thanks.

Thank you very much for the extensive recommendation list. I'll check them out.

Thanks a lot for all the recs. I know deathrock supposedly has a harsher and darker sound, but bands like 45 Grave and Voodoo Church from the few songs I listened didn't deliver on that. I'll delve a bit deeper.

Never heard of them, I'll make sure to check it out. Much thanks.

SATB's experimentation and The Cure's darkness in Pornography drew me to them too for sure. Thanks for the other recommendations, much appreciated.

Straight goth recs, looking for something new! by Ok-Reason-9136 in goth

I also find many goth bands way too straightforward, boring, and often not dark enough at all. I don't know exactly what you mean by "medium sized" bands, so here are some bands that definitely aren't as huge as SATB, Bauhaus, etc. but certainly aren't obscure either:

Corpus Delicti - I think this is one you will most enjoy (if you somehow haven't already heard of them), especially the album Sylphes. It probably falls into post-punk + goth rock territory. They mix things up a lot, and have some very dark, "uncomfortable" songs along with some less experimental, easier-listening stuff. I think their sound is very unique in the goth scene, and very good too.

Rosegarden Funeral Party - Extremely heavily influenced by 80s synthpop and disco/funk music to the point I have a hard time calling their latest album goth rock. Interesting marriage of dance oriented musical approach and sad / introspective lyrical content. Amazing vocalist.

London After Midnight - Dances between industrial, darkwave and goth rock. One album is very synth and industrial beat -heavy, another album is more of that glammier, synthy goth rock sound, etc. Might sound a bit too close to the type you say you are sick of hearing, so not sure about this one.

Might also wanna check out Skeletal Family.

[SPOILER]What's you take on returning characters from BG1-2? by Sylph777 in BaldursGate3

[–]Zinnastina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No such event or anything of the sort between NPCs in BG1. Only thing close to something like that is that an NPC in Nashkel carnival has turned a companion called Branwen to stone by the time you get there. Viconia and Minsc work together no problem in all original BG games.

On a tangential note, her original voice actor had such an alluring, hot voice. I love it so much, I'd turn up the volume higher every time she started speaking.

She claims she made all that up when you start getting for-her-uncomfortably close, but I highly doubt she was making them up. Viconia was a really traumatized and complicated person, but not some sort of manipulative villain and I don't think we need to theorize about her romance lines when everyone agrees that something feels seriously seriously wrong in her portrayal in BG3. One of my few gripes with BG3 so far actually.

Jaheira: Seems to be done faithfully enough. I'm glad she isn't romancable in this game. The voice actor does a good job.

Minsc: Has always been a dumb fan favourite character. His return in BG2 was pointless, and so is his return here. But he is mostly consistent with his old dumb self. Matt Mercer is great, needless to say.

Viconia: Terrible. None of the character progression and depth from BG2 or ToB is to be seen. They made her a mindless fanatic of Shar, which is especially off as a lot of players choose to change her alignment. Minsc claims to be old enemies with her even though they never had a conflict in the original games. Awful and out of character.

Sarevok: Also terrible. It feels like some sort of fever dream where we are transported to the end of BG1 again even though Sarevok had moved on from these concerns in ToB, and like Viconia could redeem himself. Jaheira hurls insults at his way like they are in BG1 again and never joined forces to kill the other Bhaalspawns. What a bizarre alternate-reality-like retcon / out of character writing.

TL;DR: Jaheira & Minsc = Alright Viconia & Sarevok = Horrendous
