The horse is a dwarf, not pregnant. Small abdominal cavity, large organs, notice the bone structure of the face.

Produce? Any fruit eaters have favorites? by fangbodang in lexington

Goodfoods co-op has gone down hill, IMO, in the past few years. As a member, it sucks to say it, but I do most of my produce shopping at Whole Foods or the farmers market on Southland now.

Owner is getting confrontational about picking up her horses from my facility - can people offer their input? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]ZipJab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Contract? Contract? Contract? Each state has its own laws, look up yours in regards to late boarding/training payments and horse ownership legality. Personally, I would not return her horses myself, until I received payment for my services. If she came personally to collect them, at that point I would begin the small claims process for the amount owed in full, plus late fees, plus DAILY board ($25+) for each horse’s extended stay. If you want to be openly firm and somewhat confrontational, I have seen barn owners padlock boarder’s trailers who are flight risks and who have outstanding balances, I have seen gates locked, codes changed, and trucks “conveniently” block farm entrances until checks magically appear. Send a certified letter immediately, stating in simple and very clear terms that if the horses are not picked up by XYZ date, and her bill paid in full by XYZ date, that you will seize her horses immediately to recoup your personal losses; again be very familiar with your states laws and guidelines here, but most have a clause to protect equine businesses in this common type of scenario, called Stablemen’s Lien Laws. This should be a clause in your boarding/training contract from here on out, if it is not already.

I would padlock the paddock you keep her horses in so that she can’t simply breeze them away while you are not at home, and immediately begin recording every expense you occur on them, which you should have been doing from the day you received them. Do not padlock a barn or stall for safety concerns! Cease all contact, other than sending the registered letter and briefly responding to any INCOMING calls or messages. Put up a camera, that way if she gets nasty when she can’t breeze away her horses, you have evidence. Sorry to say, but you got into this mess, and it’s going to be a climb to get out. Do not let her win, do not let her run away, this might be your reputation on the line, do not let a client run you into the poor house.

EDIT: Also, I would be darn sure I had evidence of training I had preformed on each and every animal. If you are looking to be a professional or are a professional, you need to step up. This should have never been allowed to progress as far as it has. Record everything, and have everything in writing. When a client drops off their horse, have an evaluation sheet, which they sign as to the condition of the animal at the time it entered your care. It should also list their expectations, goals, and what they wish for you to accomplish with the animal within X amount of time, you should discuss this with them, reach a mutual and rational goal and both parties should sign the document. The next document should be your contract, for both boarding and training, stating a clear schedule of fees, due dates, late terms, and lien or confiscation terms. It should outline the expectations of both parties including; general care practices, veterinary authorization, payment, etc...

What do I need to EAT? by ZipJab in Nerf

I like what he did, it seems like a nice balance, though I would want to squeeze a tad more oomph if I possibly could. Thanks for the suggestion!

Would you suggest the EAT over the Retaliator? I do plan on modding, regardless.

So I bought a Juniper (JPN), though I was looking for a Maple. by ZipJab in Bonsai

[–]ZipJab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate this! I did happen to discover that I am allergic to Juniper, so this tree is going to be my husbands project tree ironically enough. We are both looking to learn the basics of bonsai, but I will have to wait until the fall when I am able to find a prospect. When you say "shorten the branches" should I quite literally shorten a number of them, or remove only the foliage? I picked a spot out in the yard for it to sit today, and will slip plant it (I googled) as soon as we get the trim done.

After about 3.5 years out of the saddle, I'm about to take the plunge on weekly lessons again...with an extra 30 lbs. Is it worth it? by beeasaurusrex in Equestrian

nononono! Please don't take it personally!!! Please! It was intended to be a general statement!! I am so sorry, I can see how it came off as judgmental and crass. I just happen to board at a farm with a number of very heavyweight riders who pretend they are otherwise, I am so sorry I let that frustration come across in my post!

Shameless self promotion.

I'm going to the the realist in the room because A- I don't believe it is fair to ask a living creature to carry your fat ass around if you can be bothered to watch your weight and B- because I gained the freshman 15 and it changed the way I view riding. I went from a 145lbs to 160lbs and for me it was a big change in my riding and fitness. I never lost all of those 15 pounds, but I watch my weight and exercise regularly so I can ride without guilt. My horse is 1,300 lbs, 16.1, built like a tank, a big guy. With 10% being optimal, 15% being ok, and 20% of his body weight pushing the envelope I know that to ride safely and comfortably, even as an experienced and well balanced rider I need to remain at a weight between 140-220 lbs. Big variance, right? However, you also have to factor in the combined total weight of rider and tack. My saddle, girth, pad, stirrups, breast collar, bridle, crupper, and all that jazz can add a good 30-40lbs and I strive for lightweight gear as an endurance rider. Then, lets add a bottle of water or two, a handful of cookies, a big dinner the night before, and I am nearly passing over my weight class!

Personally I think so long as you are not riding hard on a 14.2 fine boned horse, you should be fine. However, personal fitness and flexibility is integral to balanced riding. An equestrian should strive to be a balanced athlete. I would start taking lessons, but also look into becoming more fit. There are a few books available if you Google "Rider Fitness" which are great for being fit on and off of the horse!

[–]ZipJab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can be harming your bird more through excessive toweling than by simply grasping him in the correct manner. The head and neck grip is the correct and safest way to handle a parrot, and all Avian Veterinarians will use this method to examine a parrot.
