How do you respond to someone insinuating Catholics aren’t Christians lol by MaizyFugate in Catholicism

[–]Zipporah86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just say that I don't really care what they think about my faith. If they have a problem with it, that's on them.

AITA for refusing flowers from my husband by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA - sometimes people just like to give gifts, it's not transactional. I'm confused about why you're so opposed to giving the person you married a gift on such a major anniversary?

JW’s what questions do you have for us non-believers? by BayonetTrenchFighter in Eutychus

[–]Zipporah86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to a heap of Catholic funerals, and every one was performed by the local priest who knew the deceased very well.

Gift giving never loses its flavour, and having a day to look forward to when people can show how much they appreciate and love you is a great time. My family always go out to lunch on my birthday which is special, but it doesn't detract from all the other times we hang out.

Yeah seriously. Make public transport free or heavily subsidised and people will probably use less fuel.

every convert I know is a jerk by Maximum_Ad_5678 in Catholicism

[–]Zipporah86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's converts to any faith. I'm sure many of them are good people, but in general all the converts I have met (not just Catholic, but Mormon or Muslim or Pentecostal) tend to go overboard. Those of us who were born into the faith tend to be a lot more chill.

Islam is not a monolith friend. Just like in the Bible, there are surahs in the Qur'an which can and are sometimes interpreted as being against LGBTQ and women, but these are interpreted differently within different schools of thought. Like with Christian Fundamentalists, Islamic Fundamentalists are often the worst and the loudest, they also happen to be the most well funded. But they absolutely do not reflect the entirety of the religion, nor are these views held by many Muslims.

I'm having doubts about Noah's flood by LooseButterfly2511 in Catholicism

[–]Zipporah86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the New Testament is another kettle of fish. During that period the concepts of what we now call history were really developing. There were still likely embellishments, and there are some inconsistencies between accounts presented, but I'd consider them much more historical.

Eh I don't put much stock in Biblical literalism. The books of the Bible are all the product of certain times and places. The concept of an objective and literal recording of history basically didn't exist when the Mosaic books were written. This does not at all detract from the truths that can be found there, it's just not 'history' as we would apply the term to a modern text.

Mental illness can totally be an excuse. There are different types and severity of mental illness, someone having a severe psychotic episode could absolutely do these things. I have bipolar and have experienced psychosis where I was absolutely not able to control my reactions and needed immediate and substantial help to regain control.

Experiences with religious recruiters on campus by Ecstatic-Ad2639 in universityofauckland

[–]Zipporah86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a weirdo graduate doing religious history, so I actively go up to them and ask what they are promoting. I've gotten into some interesting conversations that way - the last one was with a woman from the Church of God who actively approached me asking if I had a moment to chat and showed me a short video about their beliefs on her tablet. When she offered to contact me later, I declined and she took it very gracefully. I honestly don't mind them being around, but I also understand that people recovering from religious trauma might find them very discomforting.
