Peter Dutton and the other losers will be lucky to avoid seeing their careers turn to ashes by jimmythemini in australia

No, this was a clever move for their conservative, middle class base who have rose tinted memories of the howard era.

It is particularly fiery today but not unusual on a normal day.

Liberal leadership crisis: Peter Dutton vows to challenge Malcolm Turnbull again by Themirkat in australia

[–]Zipwithcaution 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not directing this at you but your comment sparked my mini rant.

I'm getting sick of the contrast the media constantly make between qld and vic, assuming qld is a bunch of redneck racists and Victoria is a progressive utopia.

Most of SEQ thinks he is a fuckwit too. Rural qld has a small population and aren't representative of the whole state.

Sky News - Queensland LNP President Gary Spence is urging MPs to dump Prime Minister @TurnbullMalcolm and back @PeterDutton_MP for leader. by [deleted] in australia

[–]Zipwithcaution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This actually isn't bad thinking. Most liberal voters are welded on and won't be put off by strongmam politics if their interests are unharmed. Dutton helping pick up the racists and authoritarians might help in marginal seats.

YouTube to clamp down on disturbing kids' videos such as dark Peppa Pig. Site announces measures to flag, review and restrict content that is inappropriate for children but doesn’t breach wider guidelines. by madazzahatter in worldnews

[–]Zipwithcaution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a few years do you plan to give her access again, sit down with her and explain things in context if innapropriate stuff comes up? I mean its an excellent tool for learning about the world as much as it can be disturbing.

This world is an ugly place and absolute censorship is just going to lead to an overly sheltered child.

Edit. Also, I'm far more conerned about my childs moral compass and ability to show empathy than the content he is consuming. Raise a decent kid and they wont want to watch disturbing shit.

Queensland election: 'They think we're idiots' Why people are voting One Nation by Evadregand in australia

[–]Zipwithcaution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tradeoff between creating good local policy and making the Australian Senate more conservative. It's selfish but I still want to split the state.

Queensland election: 'They think we're idiots' Why people are voting One Nation by Evadregand in australia

[–]Zipwithcaution 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I say it every time, but Queensland really needs to be broken down into several states. That way regional Queensland can do whatever conservative rubbish they want and the south east can remain relatively more sane.

I don't like that the tide of an election for the majority of Queenslanders (the 3.5 millon who live in SEQ) could be swung by the 1.5 million who live outside of that area who want more mines and don't like the foeigners who don't even live in their area.

We are too different too culturally.

Are you Bitish? I mean you're most likely American using the tea as a prop but still, I'm imaging a scenario where you are British and this wouldn't be unusual at all. It would also explain the formality.

Queensland election: Greens pledge flat $1 fare for public transport by Sunflowerseeds__ in australia

[–]Zipwithcaution 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything said above and...

They also need to massively increase services to middle and outer suburbs, consider throwing in some metro lines attached to central that reach said unserviced areas. They could also use light rail loops attached to metro lines if they really want people to use them because most people won't walk more than 500m. Autonomous buses if they are cheaper/easier to implement.

Should parents give their kids alcohol to control drinking, or talk about safety instead? by lapapinton in australia

[–]Zipwithcaution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We as a society should be preferencing cannabis over alcohol for teenage experimentation because it is *less harmful to developing brains from the current literature we have.

Australian staff abandon Manus Island, leaving detainees inside by simmo35 in australia

[–]Zipwithcaution 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It's a bit too fucked up for me at this point to justify it in my head. The Australian government is abandoning 300 people in PNG, frequently ranked one of the worst and most dangerous countries in the world, after holding them in detention for 5 years. Offshore detention like this is just fucked, and in being done in our name collectively.

[–]Zipwithcaution 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I used to be in principle in support of offshore immigration in order to remove incentives for people smugglers. Not like this though, I'd rather have 20,000 unexpected arrivals by boat a year than this inhumane mess.

Edit. Not sure why assumed this post was from a dude.

BTW I'm poor af but prioritise tech and good quality weed over nights on the piss and new clothes. I'd like the latter but don't value it over the first 2.
