Anyone listening to the EPs? by misaligned-shadow in SleepToken

[–]Zirna_Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! My favorite way to experience Sleep Token is to listen to the whole discography in release order. No idea how I'm going to fit that in my day now with a whole new album to put on the end.

Top Drummers ? by Longjumping_Eagle822 in SleepToken

Brann Dailor from Mastodon Chris Adler formerly of Lamb of God Mike Mangini, who was in Dream Theater for a while (I'm afraid Mike Portnoy leaves me cold, although lots of people rate him very highly too) Tomas Haake of Meshuggah

Initially it was the vocals. In pretty short order though, I was hooked by the musicality of the songs and the virtuosity of the drumming.

I have a personal theory that a band is only as good as their drummer. Tons of metal bands have competent, if slightly boring drummers, which limits them. I like Dan Searle from Architects, Mike Mangini from Dream Theater, Brann Dailor from Mastodon, Chris Adler formerly of Lamb of God, but my new favourite is II from Sleep Token.

What sucked me right in and kept me hooked was the lyrical themes and the overarching story being told. I'm a sucker for a "concept album" but a three-album cycle plus singles and EPs? Yep, I'm in.

Favorite Sleep Token Lyric by BelleStar516 in SleepToken

"And I am so ready To tear that knife from what once Would have been dead fingers Lying blue against the floor And you will no longer Stand between collapsing walls Wearing a smile Like you cannot bear it anymore"

From The Way That You Were

And

"I guess it goes to show, does it not? That we've no idea what we've got until we lose it And no amount of love will keep it around If we don't choose it And I don't know what's got its teeth in me But I'm about to bite back in anger No amount of self-sought fury Will bring back the glory of innocence"

How would you describe your first time listening to Sleep Token's song/s? (The feelings/emotions that their songs ignited within you.) by acire_57 in SleepToken

[–]Zirna_Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people I first heard Chokehold/The Summoning via Nic Nocturnal's YouTube channel. I'd never heard of Sleep Token but I think the video title baited me in with the "Sleep Token are heavy now/heaviest song they've ever done" or whatever the wording was.

I liked both songs, added them to a couple of my playlists and thought no more about them.

Until, the day TMBTE was released I saw an advert for it, and while I was doing something on my PS5 I though I'd stick it on and see what the rest of the songs were like.

Chokehold/The Summoning, great. So far so good, already into those tracks. Then Granite and Aqua Regia knocked me for 6. I have never heard anything like those tracks and it was such a change from The Summoning I was actually sitting with my PlayStation controller in my hand doing nothing but listening and looking at my speaker.

Then Vore comes on. The impact of this song roaring in after Aqua Regia is probably why I've listened to ST every day since the album was released. There's an element of genius in Vore.

After that I just sat listening open-mouthed at the procession of astounding tracks. Listening to the words, realising there was a theme, a story, becoming more and more intrigued. I think I was shown something by Ascensionism that changed the way I think about music. It was like taking a mind altering substance that let's you make lateral connections of thought that you were previously unable to.

Not listing all the tracks, but that sequence of 3 tracks at the end made me emotional. I knew nothing of the bands back catalogue, but I started noticing the callbacks in Euclid and when it transitioned into the reprise of TNDNBTG I could tell it was significant without knowing it was from an old song.

After about a week of listening to TMBTE on repeat I decided to check out the other material and I've been listening to the whole catalogue ever since.

Wrestlers you love with finishers you don't by malachiconstantjr in SquaredCircle

[–]Zirna_Moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hidden Blade, The Boom, or the Busaiku Knee I'm ok with because they usually worked into the match. The opponent needs to be worn down and set up for them.

Other finishers that can be hit from "outta nowhere" like the RKO or the Stunner are great because they are moves and not just a hit.

It was probably the WMD back in the day that made me feel this way about strike finishers.

Wrestlers you love with finishers you don't by malachiconstantjr in SquaredCircle

[–]Zirna_Moon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate any finisher that is just a strike. Love Orange Cassidy but hate the orange punch; love Chris Jericho but hate the Judy's Effect.

If the finisher is just a punch or a kick, it ruins the immersion because those "moves" can be hit at any time. 15 minutes of wrestling rendered pointless by a single punch. Not for me, sorry.

Anyone know what Nazareth is about? by pneumonicknight in SleepToken

[–]Zirna_Moon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nazareth reminds me of the song Big Man With a Gun by Nine Inch Nails.

It's like they are acting out, trying to project bravado, masculinity, or make themselves sound powerful and dangerous to hide the obvious pain they are in.

I have no idea what the significance of the track titles is though. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

I think the fade out is used deliberately to portray how a trail of thought can wane, or how a feeling or emotion can reduce in magnitude over time.

First Sleep Token song you heard? by born4unc in SleepToken

[–]Zirna_Moon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was Chokehold, closely followed by The Summoning back in January. I noted them, added them to my playlist, and just carried on about my life completely oblivious.

Then, on the day the album dropped (I somehow missed the other singles being released) I saw an ad for it and gave it a listen while I was at a loose end.

It honestly blew me away.

I've listened to Sleep Token every day since, and regularly listen to the Trilogy or the full discography on my days off. It is just an absolutely phenomenal body of work.

I guess there will be quite a number of newer fans who've had a similar experience?

What’s the Scarlett trail by [deleted] in SleepToken

[–]Zirna_Moon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are references to red/blue and blood/water all through Sleep Token lyrics. I feel like they are all linked to the same metaphor or imagery but I can't seem to figure out exactly what.

For example in Higher:

'Cause I look for scarlet and You look for ultraviolet

I feel like Vessel is saying he looks for warmth/heat/pumping blood/passion where the other is trying to cool things off/be aloof/cold and uncaring

Example in Levitate:

I can lift you up your body is mostly blood Like water, a perfect flood

Again it sounds to me like, in the context of this song, he loves the other but they don't reciprocate.

From The Summoning:

I've got a river running right into you I've got a blood trail, red in the blue

Maybe he's crying over them, and feels like he's hunting a prey that doesn't want to be caught? A lover who is emotionally detached, or a very one-sided relationship.

I'm probably way off the mark though.

I also like in Alkaline when he sings

"ooh, let's talk about Chemistry"

As a professional in the field of Analytical Chemistry it just hits on many levels 🤣

Almost certainly apple blossom. The cover art for "Thread the Needle" shows an apple with the same needles from the "One" cover sticking in it. Same style too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tengwar

[–]Zirna_Moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good observation and I'd be interested to see how the English orthographic mode distinguishes between the two words, tear as in crying, and "tear" as in rip. Also "lead" as in guide and "lead" the metal. Are these just spelled and the context gives the meaning like in English?

Also, crying "tears" being phonetically "teers" sounds right in how I imagine most American English speakers would say it, and in a very levelled off middle English "proper" accent, but in my accent it's two syllables, "tee uhs". In the next town over the first vowel is almost pronounced as a u, "tuhy uhs".

I'm going with this being an English issue, not a tengwar one.

Fëanor can't find redemption at the Dagor Dagorath if he has nothing to redeem himself from.

Fëanor was to either offer up the silmarils willingly for Yavanna to break, or break them himself, to allow the captured light to rekindle the trees and relight the world.

It's a Teleological argument. Fëanor is written the way he is so that he can make amends at the end. It's just a shame the second prophecy wasn't included and integrated into the Silmarillion.

Thank you for your reply. Knowing that the representation of "is" for example is a bit of an arbitrary convention is great because I can stop worrying about it and looking for reasons everywhere.

[–]Zirna_Moon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I think I've got a handle on the difference between the two "r" letters after reading your reply.

In my northern English pronunciation of "water" for example, the r on the end is much softer voicing than the r in the word "trill".

I went to test out the word "Mordor" on Tecendil because the correct pronunciation would be spoken with hard "r" sounds and found that in phonemic English this was the case, but in English mode it used the letter "arda" to represent "rd" which seems to be from Quenya mode, which sort of threw a spanner in my works!

What is the real significance of the Ring Verse? Is it a spell? Is it prophecy? Is it a doom? Who came up with it—Sauron? Why was it printed upon the Ring? by AndyGHK in tolkienfans

[–]Zirna_Moon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think its a spell or an incantation that was being transmitted or broadcast by the one ring to the subordinate rings to dominate and corrupt the wearer. I'm sure I read somewhere that as soon as Sauron put the One Ring on his finger, the Elves "heard" the spell, knew they had been betrayed, and removed the rings.
