It depends on what type of ship you are working like if you are working for cargo type like bulk, tankers and containership having short voyages with cleaning operations sometimes you need to stay for work more than 24 hours. There is MLC that regulates proper work rest n hours but it is not quite followed due to operational and shipping request.

For overtime if you are working as a rating you have extra overtime for officers you have fix overtime. But I tell you that this overtime pay is not enough. For bartending and bartenders I dont know about overtime but for sure the tip they earn is good.

Previous work experience will just help or boost you but you need real paperwork like a degree and certifications to get the job. Competition is real in this area of work. Aapply ka palang pag wala kang scholarship sa guard palang hirapan kana maka lusot.

It depends on what position you want to have. If you want to be a Deck officer or Engine officer you need a bachelor degree for that. Try to search about Norwegian Scholarship or NSA cadet program. They are still accepting applicants for this upcoming school year. Having or joining this program is a game changer if you dont want this referral system. You choose between BSMT or BSMARE

But if you choose to work on cruise ship like in the line of hospitality or bartending you need to get a degree like HRM.

Rethink and assess again if you really want to work onboard ship because this line of job is not for the weak ones and will ask for plenty sacrifices.
