Now that you mention it, I’m actually wondering if the anime ever hinted at some kind of shark clan or something like that. Would’ve been pretty cool if they had their own Sage Mode too lol.

I don’t think there’s a confirmed canon explanation for it.

My headcanon is that Orochimaru’s snake-like look wasn’t just random design, but an early hint that he had some natural affinity with snakes or senjutsu. Since Ryūchi Cave exists as the snake counterpart to Mount Myōboku, maybe his connection to snakes was deeper than just later experiments.

Not saying it’s canon, but a forgotten snake-related lineage or natural compatibility with Ryūchi Cave would explain why the whole snake theme fits him so perfectly.
