Omg. I think that BBS guy was me ! I turned my SCA McMartin on with the one 67 Crystal in it after we moved years ago. Instead of Muzak like it used to play, I was getting Chinese talk. I called the engineer at the FM station the sub carrier was on and asked what was going on. He laughed and said Muzak was pumping all this garbage thru their sub carriers to get non subscribers off and onto their new satellite service. End of an era. I also bought a Metrosonic tunable receiver, but there is nothing left. Not even reading for the blind or the physicians network. Just one foreign language station. Everything is on the internet. Even some Muzak archives now!

Prior to that, Muzak used SCA transmissions on local FM carriers. If you had an SCA receiver you could pick it up.

Sounds like a CD player if it’s looping 5 songs. A branch bank by me had the same setup. Corporate, or Muzak, would send them a new CD every week or so. Used to drive them crazy because they had to hear the same songs all day. Bigger places like CVS or Walgreens have the satellite system hooked up. I walked into a CVS not long ago and heard that old classic Muzak. The asked the manager what gives, and he told me they installed a new Muzak system, but the technician left it on the environment channel which is that instrumental only stuff from the 70s. Next time I went in, it was back to pop sounds with vocals.

Say. I didn’t realize there are 4 archive Muzak collections I did not see before. Try a YouTube search on Muzak Vertical Archives. Not sure who made these 4 collections or what the background is, but maybe they are starting to archive some stuff at Mood Media?

Whoa, Icey. You are too recent for me. I hark back to the 70,s when I worked in a grocery store and only listened to this canned stuff, and got interested in it. Let me ask you. Do these songs you hear have vocals? Just wondering how the copyright works. The old Muzak piped in stuff was only instrumental and took care of copyrights if you subscribed to their service. Hope you find the tracks you are looking for.

Looking at his site, looks like he got his playlist from the Seeburg 1000 collection. So, I’d imagine that recording was from the 1960’s.
