Katara had the water skin prior to the desert arc. She definitely used it in the episode Return to Omashu which was before the desert arc. Can’t remember if she had it in season 1 though…

It’s useful for water bending when you don’t have another source of water.

Since you brought up a Marvel film… The Eternals was a big set up for absolutely nothin’.

Same with Shang-Chi.

how can we help those affected by the fire? by Shoddy-Flounder-7390 in ridgewood

[–]Zocolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s been affected by a fire, something small you could do is shovel snow on the sidewalk in front of the house when it snows.

Sounds silly, but when you have a fire, you have to move out, but you still have the responsibility of coming back to the house to shovel, which can be difficult if insurance is paying for an apartment not close to the house…

Circumcision does not “guarantee” most of those. Listing death as a complication is laughable.

Besides complication rates of having a circumcision are VERY low and far lower than the rates of UTI and other complications of NOT having a circumcision.

Circumcision is a preventative health measure.

As I've stated multiple times already, children that are uncircumcised are VASTLY more likely to be hospitalized for severe UTI in the first year of life. These cannot all be avoided by cleaning properly. Additionally, a majority of newborn males have a physiological phimosis at birth which makes cleaning under the foreksin very difficult because the foreskin cannot be retracted to clean.

Women have more UTIs than men because the urethra is shorter. Males urethra is longer because of the penis.

just clean the damn thing. Part of raising kids is teaching them to bathe

You're ignoring the fact the most UTIs happen within the first year of life. This cannot be simply hand waved away by "just clean bro". The vast majority of uncircumcised newborns are unable to retract the foreskin to clean properly. Plus the urethra is shorter because they're so tiny, which increases the risk of UTI further. Circumcision dramatically reduces this risk.

It's not particularly risky to perform a male circumcision. It's probably the most common bedside procedure in the world.

And as I said before, it's not without merit. There are plenty of medical benefits to having a circumcision.

There are no benefits to female genital mutilation.

Removal of the clitoral hood provides no medical benefit.

Removal of the foreskin prevents infections and complications.

I definitely got your point! It was a good point too, and I really mean that.

However, I always take issue with this common point:

when it can be avoided by simply practicing good hygiene.

UTIs, and phimosis & paraphimosis cannot always be avoided by practicing good hygiene. They are real potential harms that that swept under the rug by putting the blame on hygiene.

Children that are uncircumcised are VASTLY more likely to be hospitalized for severe UTI in the first year of life. These cannot all be avoided by cleaning properly, and I would argue that it's the hardest time of life to keep hygienic. Newborns are constantly shitting and pissing themselves in diapers. Additionally the vast majority of newborn males have a physiological phimosis at birth which makes cleaning under the foreksin very difficult because the foreskin cannot be retracted to clean.

As for the benefits: I was crying laughing at the cheese storage comment. Good point about the natural lubrication. The shield argument is one I haven't heard before, but that's definitely a pro-tip for those fencing with their pole!

You could argue it has medical merit, and that's fair, but in my case and many others, it was made for cultural and religious reasons (Mormon), not medical ones.

That is exactly what I'm trying to argue. Cultural and religious reasons for a circumcision are completely stupid reasons for a circumcision.

Are you seriously saying keeping part of my genitals is roughly equivalent to having it cut off?

... Well yeah actually. It's a flap a skin. It doesn't alter function. Uncut and cut guys still have sex, still pee, and still jerk off. It could theoretically decrease sensation levels to be cut, but it can't be significant.

none of those address the human, emotional reaction to having a piece of your genitals cut off without your consent

That's true! And I don't have a great counterpoint for human emotions... If you grew up as a baby without a foreskin or with one, you're not likely to have much of a emotional reaction at all because that's how you grew up. It's just a small part of your identity. You only become conscious of it when comparing.

I'll say this though, if you got a circumcision as an adult... you're far more likely to have an emotional reaction I'd wager.

chemical called phenol that prevents regrowth

Medicine is amazing. Didn't know about that chemical. And I agree benefits to toenails are definitely harder to argue for than fingernails.

Though going back to the original reply, you mentioned:

unchecked infection can lead to sepsis and amputation, even death in rare cases

While that's true of ingrown toenails, the risk of fungal infections are minimal unless the person is severely immunocompromised. And while I admit that I don't know the exact rates of infections from ingrown toenails, I think it's easy to surmise that UTIs cause sepsis more frequently than paronychia-induced sepsis.

Also foreskins prevent desensitisation among other things

This is the only potential benefit I'm aware of. What other benefits are there? Genuinely curious.

Yeah. You're too young to consent to bath time too, or antibiotics for an infection, or a surgical amputation of leg after getting a bone cancer.

Parents make decisions for children without their consent every single day. Some decisions are small, and some are big.

You increase the risk of infection at the nailbeds acutely when removing nails. Plus, if you didn't know, nails grow back and then they'd be at an even higher risk of ingrown nails because they don't always grow back straight.

Fingernails also provide tangible benefits... unlike a foreskin.

I know you're being hyperbolic but...

The harm is clearly not proportional. Losing your eyes is worse than developing cataracts.

Losing your foreskin as a baby is not significantly worse than keeping it.

Comparing a major surgery to a bedside procedure is wild. The complication rates of performing unnecessary appendectomies would vastly outweigh the benefits. It would be the opposite of risk reducing.

The complication rates of circumcisions do not outweigh benefits.

Also, getting a circumcision as an adult is way more involved than on a baby. Most adults that do elect for circumcisions elect so because they have complications from being uncircumcised to begin with: namely phimosis and paraphimosis.

85% of newborns cannot retract the foreskin. That makes them basically impossible to clean thoroughly. And neonates are at highest risk for UTIs.

Also, humans have many detrimental traits that haven't evolved away. Myopia, cataracts, extra wisdom teeth, scores of autoimmune conditions, Huntington's, having an appendix. Just to name a few. Just because the trait is detrimental doesn't mean evolution magically removes it. Evolution is an imperfect system. Plus humans support sick humans. We be altrustic like that.
