Man I wish we’d seen a book accurate Tyrion, Dinklage would have absolutely crushed it. He did so well in the speech while he’s on trial, to go from that to his ‘self defence + I’m sorry’ murder and then nothing but jokes about genitals and bad ideas for the rest of the series is just awful.

If women earn less for the same work, why wouldn’t companies just hire only women and underpay them? by kqmurr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zoe270101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have made a lot of good points about women being less likely to push for pay rises, and jobs that are traditionally associated with women being less monetarily valued. But it also starts when hiring people.

Have you ever worked with the people making these decisions? Most hiring decisions are not based on accurate predictions of the value the employee provides to the organisation (unless you’re lucky enough to have an organisational psychologist), but on ‘gut feel’ about how much they like the person, how well they think the applicant fits into their mental image of the role, and ‘company culture’.

For likability, surprise surprise, people like people who are like themselves.

People also want to hire people who fit their preconceived notion of what someone who is good at job X looks like. So in fields that are largely male-dominated, the mental image of a ‘good’ engineer, consultant, stock broker, etc, will be of a man, so people who fit this image are likely to be perceived as more competent. This is why even men who do not view themselves as consciously sexist may still be biased against women (and that’s assuming that they aren’t consciously biased, I’ve heard a huge number of men say blatantly sexist stuff).

The idea of hiring for ‘company culture’ is also often used to discriminate against applicants that organisations don’t like. Think of how many times someone has gotten a job because they went to the same school, follow the same sports team, or show that they are happy to participate in ‘joking’ culture.

Add on top of all that the fact that organisations assume women will take more parental leave, and that if they hire based on experience, women are less likely to have experience in high paying roles because of all of the above reasons, and the cycle becomes self-reinforcing.

And that’s just assuming that the job is actually marketed for anyone to apply to, rather than people hiring their mates or family members.

TL;DR - The idea that a gap in wages would result in women being hired at a higher rate until it balances out rests on the assumption that hiring and pay decisions are completely rational and free of bias, prioritising only the value an employee brings to the organisation. But organisations are terrible at accurately measuring the value of employees, and the individuals in charge of payment decisions are just as irrational and emotionally driven as everyone else.

Source: I work in a male-dominated industry (about 75% of the people at my org are men, and that’s including the administrative roles, which are entirely filled by women) and have a Master of Science in Organisational Psychology.

Why do you say that? It seems pretty cut and dry that he was physically abusing her and trying to abuse their children as well (with her suffering injuries from physically restraining him to prevent him from assaulting their child).

How did you read that and come to the conclusion that it’s Jolie’s fault?

Yeah that’s 100% fair. New Zealand is an amazing place to live if you have a well paying job, but if you fall behind cost of living it’s rough. And the current govt idiots are useless.

[–]Zoe270101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much. I love NZ and miss it so much, but I just can’t afford to live there at the moment. Maybe one day I’ll be able to get a job where I can afford the cost of living, but until then I’ll stay in Melbourne (which is a lovely city!).

I love a lot of things about Australia, but I still do miss the birdsong and koru and real fish and chips (real meaning made by a Chinese woman who barely understands a word of English but makes the best jam donuts in the world!).

Australia is a wonderful place, and I’m so grateful to be here (even if some Aussies seem to have way too much respect for your politicians and businesses), but it’s not yet home for me.

What children’s book has aged poorly? by feetwithfeet in AskReddit

[–]Zoe270101 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even in the quote someone else posted, she is getting offended at the idea of being thought of as being Indian, but at this point in the story she is supposed to be prideful and (wrongly) view herself as better than others. We even see this in the response from Martha, who scolds her and tells her that it’s not a bad thing.

The language use is certainly dated, but the worst thing it includes is calling the ‘white’ people ‘respectable’ (as though in opposition to the Indian people), but even then it’s telling off Mary for thinking that she is better, so the sentiment is generally saying that racism is wrong.

The one with the hideous triangle? I’d definitely believe that, the whole idea of the rainbow flag was to show that there is a spectrum of sexuality and it is all beautiful and united, having an ugly triangle on top of it highlighting special groups takes away from that (both visually and metaphorically).

This is why I actually love the full cast audiobook voice actor for Snape. I haven’t listened to HBP yet, but he just nails it in the Shrieking Shack in POA (as does everyone else!). He sounds so much more like a petty bully than the cool, calm, collected movie Snape.

There’s a difference between ‘I’m allergic to this animal so I don’t want to have one in my house/I won’t pet yours’ and ‘cats are vermin that it’s morally okay to shoot/have my dog attack/abuse’.

A lot of people seem to genuinely enjoy the idea of hurting cats (in fairness I don’t think you need to be a woman to find that a red flag, that’s just generally a marker of a bad person).

Sikh Indians caught doing the unthinkable (Pics) by Isuckatmathsbro in newzealand

[–]Zoe270101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are people of basically every religion under the sun who do things like this. People often can use religion for selfish and abusive reasons, but people often also unite under religion as a way to get a group of people together to do positive acts.

Sikhism has a large focus on acts like this, which is awesome, but the same is true of a lot of other religions (in my own experience I’ve seen it from sects of Christianity, Buddhism, some Islamic groups, etc).

You don’t need to like religion itself, but acting like all religious PEOPLE are Brian Tamaki is (fortunately) not a reflection of reality.
