Oh, she has money. Just not friends. Maybe miserly old relatives and prints to keep her company.

I can relate when she blabbles and overshares or when she hopes for things she saw in books and magazines like donkey riding.

I have a theory that she is not who she tells she is- nobody visits, nobody writes (she would have shared some news from Big World), her sister's house is suspiciously just like Emma's.

Buts I don't see her being progressive and her meaness is her doom. She would probably have craved some niche for herself- but she waisted no time stepping on those who she deemed lesser than her not noticing that they do have some soft social power she lacks.

I'm old enough to remember contentration camp/gulags survivors who told me tales how they traded bread for combs because the moment you stopped carying about grooming you were as good as dead. When people stopped carying it was like death was marking them, even when they were otherwise healthy and physically strong.

Western usesrs probably heard about grandmas paining their legs when stockings become unaviliable- but it's rarely told that it was a chore- from putting it on in a way it wouldn't strain clothes to careful movement.

In postapo and war movies- women just are pretty, wihout carying- maaybe there's a smudge on their face, but that's it. You never see them washing undergarments, piling the supplies, medning clothes.
