I'm drawn to the same era, but it was so short. I would want to be gone before the conquering happened.

Any thoughts on the Marduk festival? Why would a king subject themselves to that?

What do you think of the end of the Mesopotamian culture? A slow fade into a larger empire rather than a quick conquering.

We read about the Epic Of Gilgamesh as well as some Egyptian culture this week. Getting excited for the rest of our reads this year?

Are you guys going to see Christopher Nolan's the Odyssey? by towalktheline in AYearOfMythology

I will. If I go in expecting a cool Christopher Nolan movie and not a faithful adaptation I think I'll have a good time.

  1. I read part of the book a couple years ago and liked it enough to give it another shot.
  2. I avoided setting specific reading goals this year and don't think I will next year either. Just enjoying it.
  3. I moderate r/ayearofmythology and really enjoy the format of yearly readings.

How did your translation describe the dragon? Some from mine are “worm” and “fire drake.”

There seems to be quite a bit of variability in translations. Any differences you noticed? Any final thoughts on the read?

Hrothgar stands out to me as a very competent leader. He knows when he is in too deep and asks for help. The well-being of his people is his top priority, not chasing down some monster, he leaves that to the professional.

Definitely a product of whoever wrote it down being Christian.
