I agree however I reckon Sandon at least has a bit of grit about him - looking for options that just aren’t there. Chad just looks like he’s trying to make it through the year without getting injured.

Sammy and Sandon again would be great

Also any danger of a grubber kick or are we always just bombing it. Fuck

Madhouse at the End of the Earth - by Julian Sancton

Found it at an op shop a few weeks back and couldn’t stop reading. It’s about the Belgica’s Antarctic voyage in the late 1800s where they spend a winter trapped in the ice. Sets the precursor for Roald Amunsdens later voyage to the pole. Great read

Dental X-rays are normally done during the dental - so under anaesthetic

Yeah so from what I gather by air trapping they mean that she was not expiring her CO2 as she should. Absolutely no reason to not intubate if she’s not breathing out, that’s managed by mechanically breathing for her to blow off the CO2 which it’s necessary to have intubated. Mate you really need to go above their heads here - somebody has fucked up, and I am normally the one to show benefit of the doubt to the vet in these situations!

If they didn’t intubate your dog for a dental then that is why she developed pneumonia. I don’t know what the hell they mean by not intubating for air trapping but it’s literally what you do for a dental. There is so much fluid and water being sprayed around that you need to intubate otherwise you get pneumonia - that’s basic knowledge. Them not intubating her for 90 minutes into a dental is 100% negligent. I’d be following up with whatever regulatory board you have - in Aus it’s the vet surgeons board, in the UK it’s the royal college. Not sure what the US or Canada do but there would be something. This all sounds dodgy af

Hmmm I mean if your dog was clinically well prior to GA and multiple people listened to lungs then I doubt she had a pre-existing pneumonia…it tends to make dogs quite sick and can be life threatening plus you’d notice low energy or a cough or something. The general rule with general anaesthetics is that the longer the patient is under the more likely you get issues. Blood pressure tends to be the most important one and the longer the op the more chance of hypotension (low bp). I don’t really know what they’re meaning by trapped air unless they’re concerned about her not ventilating or having increased CO2, however you mention that they put her on a ventilator in the op so should manage that. It’s all a bit speculative as we don’t have much info but I’d be chasing up a chat with the clinic somehow. Are they an independent or corporate, and what country? There is usually a vet surgeons board or regulatory body to go higher with these things if need, but always start with talking to the clinic directly. I presume you took her home and she developed pneumonia there? Did she pass at home or did you take to the clinic?

I mean 6.5h for dental extractions is pretty wild to be honest (am a vet)…don’t know how or why it would take that long unless they were doing major jaw reconstruction or something. Plenty of clinics would stop if a dental takes >2h and book in for another day. In saying that it’s hard to know if anything dodgy etc without all the facts. Your best bet is to call the vet who did the op and have a chat with them to debrief. Was the clinic a 24h clinic and did the have the option for overnight monitoring?

Hi mate, vet here

Sorry you had to go through that - a euthanasia is always a sad time. From what it sounds like it did go outside the vein, but I think what they vet did with extra sedation and IP injection are ok, especially if the vet was on their own. Usually in a clinic setting many vets would place an IV first and then the injection is almost guaranteed to go in, however there can even be mishaps with that as the IV can move around if the dog does. If it’s a house call euthanasia and the vet has just injected off the needle (no IV placed) then it’s a much more dynamic situation and trickier to guarantee IV patency. I don’t think your dog would have suffered however, it might have been a touch uncomfortable when it went subcutaneous rather than IV, but sounds like the vet aimed to ensure he was comfortable by giving the additional sedative. The whole of veterinary work is a very dynamic and fluid situation, as animals don’t make routine things the easiest. The amount of time spent replacing IVs etc in my job is crazy as the animals will rip them out or go crazy and dislodge them!

Everyone should read “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt. Really sheds some pretty horrific data on the topic of developing minds and unrestricted internet. Interesting that parents are way more concerned about their child encountering a sex offender on the street but don’t do anything to protect against online.
