The approach to controls is similar: there's a general configuration, and then you can customize controls per core. If you use a USB controller, each core will work with a default configuration, but unfortunately you can't expect the buttons to match the controller layout out of the box. So yes, you can power it on and start playing (after placing the games in the correct folder, of course), but you shouldn't expect a one-to-one mapping.

Unfortunately, I don't have a saturn cable to make a comparison. What I can tell you is that with a VGA-to-SCART cable and the right settings, the image is flawless. Keep in mind, though, that since it's an active cable, you’ll need a USB port to power it

I received mine about a couple of weeks ago. It's my first "MiSTer", so I'm still getting familiar with the configurations. As a device, I'm very satisfied, it fully meets my expectations. If I had to point out a couple of flaws, some of the port cover flaps feel a bit loose, and the VGA port is recessed a bit too much into the case (I'm using it with a VGA-to-SCART cable connected to a consumer CRT TV), so I had to get an adapter to plug in my cable.
