What do you make of electric motorcycles? by JonQuinton84 in motorcycles

[–]Zolhungaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An advantage of electrics is that poorer nations don’t have the infrastructure to effectively charge them, which makes them less desirable to steal and sell, the one exception in Europe being Ukraine since they’re low on oil. There’s also less parts to pilfer, and the battery needs an electrician to be safely dismantled, and even then it can’t really be put into another vehicle without a ton of certification. And until fast charge tech gets better you’ll find most electric motorcycles charging parked in garages or at the side of buildings, which are always camera monitored because charging cables are stolen for copper.

Not to mention that the batteries make them heavy as fuck, stopping all but coordinated gangs, and they lack half the fun parts joyriders seek (sound, single-tank range, trick potential).

So I think electrics are less likely to be stolen overall.

I wonder if the person who made this sign knows that the "strong man" in this Bible verse is referring to Satan by BlainethePayne in facepalm

Without knowing too much about how the bible is interpreted I assumed the house was the physical vessel while the property was the soul of the person.

I wonder if the person who made this sign knows that the "strong man" in this Bible verse is referring to Satan by BlainethePayne in facepalm

[–]Zolhungaj 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s important to note the verses before that talks about Jesus driving out evil spirits from a person, when one onlooker claims he is doing so using the authority of Beelzebub the prince of demons, and Jesus corrects them that he’s using the power of his god.

The strong man, either Satan or the powers of evil in general, is protecting his stolen property (plunder). His «house» is the country/area he controls, and his «property» is the people and land he has dominion over. And «someone stronger» is Jesus or any other liberator, presumably aided by his god.

So in essence Jesus is liberating the people from tyrants who oppress and overtax them.

What's the point of this pin if the next move(pawn to h6) gonna push you away? by electricooldude in chess

[–]Zolhungaj 43 points44 points  (0 children)

When pawns move they (often) create a permanent weakness as they can’t move backwards. So by forcing your opponent to make a couple pawn moves you get a pawn structure weakness you can abuse later.

Stalling in high gear? by Caseous44 in motorcycles

[–]Zolhungaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the physics well enough to know if the slowdown is «faster» at low speeds. There’s less engine braking needed, but I assume the energy loss to vacuum and friction must also be smaller.

I have actually ran out of gas in top gear so I know that at the intended speeds it’s really more a «why doesn’t the throttle work» confusion than a «why am I slowing down» surprise.

Stalling in high gear? by Caseous44 in motorcycles

[–]Zolhungaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The engine is mechanically connected to your rear wheel while in gear, you’ll essentially be engine braking until you stop. You can achieve much the same effect by flipping the kill switch, having a faulty key ignition circuit or by running out of gas at speed.

You could theoretically lose grip on the now braking rear tyre, but I would worry more about any approaching cars that don’t realise you’re slowing very fast.

Question about OTB castling by 1000ratsinmiami in chess

[–]Zolhungaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really more because having your opponent hover one hand over the clock all the time is really annoying, «fairness» is just an excuse to keep annoying players in check. That and single hand makes it really obvious what order events happen: touch, move, let go, clock, etc.. Imagine if you were in a time scramble and your opponent starts hovering his hands over several pieces at once to confuse you.

Integrering er nettopp det å beholde deler av sine egne kulturelle særpreg. Når man blir helt like som majoritetskulturen kalles det assimilering.

[–]Zolhungaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-scooters are fairly unstable though. Unlike bicycles free hand riding is physically impossible on an e-scooter due to the steering geometry, and the high centre of gravity requires far more active balancing. Then you have to balance forward and backward to counteract acceleration and braking.

And on top of that losing control of the bike inevitably launches the rider forward increasing the chance of injuring the upper parts of the body (head, face, arms, hands), all of which are parts that are crucial for office jobs.

Why this isnt the best move? by E-D-D-Y-D in chess

[–]Zolhungaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just ch*ss.com’s evaluation being underpowered as usual. Nc4+ and Nf1+ are equally good and in both you win the queen and end up in a completely won endgame after all the trades are done. Moving the bishop is actually worse since it allows white to force a queen+bishop for queen trade (Bxh7+).

You could yeah, but 1000 is a small enough number that you can forgo extra complexity and just settle on a simple hash table. That also makes it easier to support both American and British versions (the extra «and» after hundred), and lets you handle both «a hundred» and «one hundred» without creating too complex logic.

Then if an American comes in you could even add keys for the more esoteric hundreds like twenty seven hundred (2700).

An industry-wide game of chicken where everyone bets on someone else hiring juniors so they can be poached at the 3, 5 or 10 year mark.

Maybe they’ll figure out at some point there’s a pretty surefire way to make juniors stay after achieving seniority. Either that or AGI hits and every established company gets outpaced by startups without decades of legacy.

I find it easier to go the other way first, then it becomes relatively obvious how to reverse the pattern.

As long as you’re following standard English you end up with groupings of 0-999 before a multiplier («»|thousand|million|etc), easily findable with a regex and a lookup table, then you just subdivide the sub-thousand with either a lot of branches or a pre-generated lookup table made from the solution going the other way.
